Birdman should be on that list as well.

A few potentially-glaring omissions, IMHO:

+ Danger Mouse
+ (though I'm loathe to admit it) The Smurfs
+ Voltron - in any of its incarnations
+ Tranzor Z
+ Any of the Go-Bots - Leader-1, Cy-Kill, etc.
+ Lion-O and the rest of the Thundercats
+ Spider-man
+ The Incredible Hulk
+ X-Men
+ Oh, and three simple words:

Optimus. Fucking. Prime.

A few signs of dating myself and being show as unhip as far as cartoons are concerned... when I ask who the hell are:

+ Angelica Pickles (Is she that damn Rugrats brat?)
+ Gerald McBoing-Boing (I'm guessing that he's not the same as "Sheriff - BING BING BING!! - Ricochet Rabbit!"?
+ Tom Terrific
+ SpongeBob SquarePants
+ Bobby Hill (Is this the kid from that Howie Mandel cartoon "Bobby's World"?)
+ Arthur

And while I'm at it, a few entries to which I respond, "I know of them, but how the fuck did they get on this list??"

+ Top Cat
+ Daria

Daria was a funny show but it was only on for like 2 season. Hell, I liked it and I wouldn't consider her one of the top 50 characters.

I don't want to take a sock full of quarters to these people, but I am glad that I was too cheap to cave into my curiousity and buy the issue.

And how can they throw stuff like Ren & Stimpy on the same list as the Simpsons and Tom & Jerry and such. Just because these characters are all animated does not mean they can all be evenly compared in the same field. I like the Simpsons and I like Ren & Stimpy and about a half dozen other cartoons on that list (and about a TON more that aren't on that list...), but *I* couldn't tell you which character was necessarily better because they're all for different things. It'd be like if they tried a best tv show ever list. Of course, they probably have, and it probably sucked.

VH1 lists suck too. I wish I wasn't so naturally inquisitive as to get sucked into these stupid things knowing that the stuff I like is going to get crapped on in favor of, well, crap.

And by virtue of being a G.I.Joe, would our beloved Sgt. Slaughter have been eligible for this???

ANGELICA PICKLES: Exactly - the bratty girl from "Rugrats"

GERALD McBOING-BOING: Kind of a strange pick - a largely forgotten character from the 50s - this was a kid who couldn't speak except for sound effects, hence the "boing boing" in the name.

TOM TERIFFIC: Old cartoons from "Captain Kangaroo". Mostly here for nostalgia purposes.

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS: Not knowing this one is pretty damned impressive, seeing as it's the latest fad show out there. It's a fairly strange cartoon series on Nickelodeon, centering around an annoying talking sponge, but I'll admit (begrudgingly) that the show is pretty damned funny, at least if you have an absurdist sense of humor.

BOBBY HILL: The kid from (and the only reason to watch) "King Of The Hill". And, no, this was *not* a bad choice at all...

ARTHUR: Some preschool character on PBS based on a series of kids' books.

Why would anybody suggest something like taking a sock full of quarter to TV Guide for making a lousy top 50 list? A burlap sack filled with doorknobs makes a much better statement.
Other takes:

- So why was the Pink Panther left off the list? How come wrestling fans aren't outraged that nobody from Hulk Hogan's Rock N' Wrestling didn't make the list? Animated JYD was off the hook.

- AngryJohnny, agreed on the take about Mickey Mouse. And Angelica Fucking Pickles has a nice ring to it.

- The only way Lisa Simpson would make anybody's top 50 list is to be lumped in with Bart. Bart, it's time to cut the dead weight.

- Homer Simpson excluded, I don't think any cartoon character in the Top 10 that became famous in the 90's deserved their spot.

- Since everybody loves list, here's my Top 10 Worst Cartoon Characters of All Time:

1. Scrappy Doo - Annoying little sack o' shit that didn't belong anywhere near the Scooby Doo franchise.

2. Wonder Twins - I didn't think there were superheroes that sucked more than Aquaman.

3. The Great Kazoo - WTF? A little green alien with an annoying voice that existed in the prehistoric times and only Fred and Barney could see them? Pass whatever that is you're smokin.

4. Olive Oyl - If I were Popeye, I'd throw the fight and let Bluto have her.

5. Peggy Hill - A self-centered, egotistical bitch in animated form.

6. Aquaman - A guy who can talk to fish. The bad guys are shaking in their boots.

7. Pepe LePew - Should be in a federal "pound me in the ass" prison. That'll cure his abrasive ways with the women.

8. M.C. Hammer - Yes, he did have a cartoon. And yes, it did. Big time.

9. Betty Boop - Is that supposed to be sexy? I dare ya say "boop boop be do" one more time, bitch. Say "boop boop be do" one more goddamn time.

10. Tennessee Tuxedo - Since when did Inspector Gadget turn into an unfunny penguin?

And does anyone else wanna take a sock full of quarters to the staff of TV Guide?

I should probably hit myself upside da head for posting this at 3:46 am EST , but I was re-reading this thread, and something about the list and this post stuck out.

Mickey in the Top Five? Hell, Mickey at #1. Case closed. End of fucking discussion.

Thanks to Mickey, how many movies has Disney put out? At least 50 would be a conservative guess, perhaps? Do we really want to count how many Warner Bros. "films" we've seen released with Bugs Bunny and Co. in them? Mickey's helped to spawn no less than four amusement parks over the world. Bugs? Sorry, dude, Six Flags amusement parks were already there, guy. And for all the power the corporate monolith known as AOL-Time Warner may have... when was the last time you heard about Congress extending the duration of U.S. copyright because the copyright on Bugs Bunny was about to run out?

Sock full of quarters to TV Guide's staff? I'm thinking more along the lines of "Nuke the bastards." ;)

The Lion King [1994] was their 32nd theratical animated movie, so i'm pretty sure they're up to around 40 by now [Monsters, Inc. (2001)]

Disney might have made 40 movies but a lot of them suck. The Rescuers, Pocahantus, Los Cabolaros, etc. For every good Disney movie like the Lion King they make some boring over P.C. garbage like Tarzan. How many kids were saying," I wish there was a movie about Phil Collins singing every minute?" Then there are the even better sequels. Anyone who has seen Aladin 2 will know that Disney is just out for the money.

The Great Kazoo is actually the Great Gazoo.

While not a fan of Disney, I also agree that Mickey Mouse should be in the top five. Donald Duck should be ranked higher also.

Bugs is right on at #1, but Daffy Duck should definitely be higher, and what's with Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner at #38?! It's almost like this is the DVDVR TOP 50 CARTOON CHARACTERS~! list or something.

(Obviously, I *know* it's not since DR would've got the Powerpuff Girls into the Top 10.)

If you're going to put current flash-in-the-pan characters in there where are Dexter and Johnny Bravo, anyway?

And I also had not idea who Angelica Pickles was until someone clarified it, though to my surprise that's not a *really* bad porn actress-stage name.

At least they got number one right with Bugs. But with all the talk about a mouse should be moved up higher (and I agree, Mickey is the solid number two in my books)....what about the cats?

Gumby ripped you off by taking the time you used to watch, and making sure that not only had you wasted it, but you would never get it back. Kind of like WCW in 2000.

Donald did a few cameos in uber toon "Duck Tales", blah toon "Quack Pack", and both him and Mickey have been in theatrical shorts shown on TV. "House of Mouse" is kinda recent so I guess it doesn't count, but it should if Angelica FUCKING Pickles does. Felix and a couple of the other guys ranked on the list despite being run first in theatres and if those guys are on the list at all, Mickey belongs at #1 or #2. That simple.

Ok, I'm really just mad they blackballed the Super Globetrotters.

All I have to say is that "Tom and Jerry" got robbed. Easily top 10. It has staying power. Also, who didn't dig the music the show used for its 70's era shows? That's one funky soundtrack.
