Has no one suggested Prodigy's The Fat of the Land? I dunno about elsewhere, but in America, it was pretty much "Firestarter", "Breathe", and that was it.

That`s because they haven`t released an album since then.

Props to Rudy for mentioning TMBG and The Specials, two of my all-time favorite bands.

Third Eye Blind, Blind Melon, Collective Soul, Semisonic, Cutting Crows

I'll grant you most of those, and while I absolutely love the Counting Crows, they take too much time in between albums to make anything stick.

But I have to disagree with Collective Soul. The have 2 multi-platinum albums, 2 other platimun albums, and their newest one is gold.

And now, the 80's mega-sellers...

a-ha - Hunting High and Low ("Take on Me", "The Sun Always Shines on TV")

Mr. Mister - Welcome to the Real World ("Broken Wings", "Kyrie", "Is it Love")

Tears for Fears - Songs from the Big Chair ("Shout", "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", "Head Over Heels")

Crowded House - "Crowded House" ("Don't Dream It's Over", "Something So Strong", "World Where You Live")

Big Country - "In A Big Country" ("In A Big Country", "Fields of Fire"...Stuart Adamnson killed himself 16-Dec-2001)

Most of them released other records (a couple released a LOT of records) but none ever came close to that huge seller.

Lots of things to hit, and not much time to hit them:

-Peter Gabriel: I wasn't sure on how big the sales beforehand were, and stand corrected.

-Semisonic, Blind Melon, Chumbawumba: One hit wonders. Only had the one song anyone truly bought. Which made seeing Chumbawumba live at a radio festival concert quite an amusing experience.

Split Enz: Leads into another one for me, Crowded House's debut album, which had a couple huge hits in America, and then they kinda faded away, which is a colossal shame because Neil Finn is a pop song machine. Shame he has to keep lugging his talentless brother around out of sympathy

-Flaming Lips: No they never had a hit like "Jelly" again, but dammit recording the single best album of the 90's "The Soft Bulletin" should count for something!

-Barenaked Ladies: Not even close. Rock Spectacle sold very well, Stunt huge, Maroon huge, and the greatest hits is selling nicely.

-Counting Crows: This one is a close call. "Long December" was a huge hit off of Recovering the Satellites, which might just have eked them out of this category.

-TMBG: I just wanted to add a vote for how cool they are. Their live show is just pure joy for 2 hours.

-Tears For Fears: "Sowing the Seeds of Love" was a monster hit back in the late 80's for them, again like the Counting Crows maybe just edging them out of this.

There, I feel better now.

"Cracked Rear View" sold 16 million albums - "Fairweather Johnson" struggled to sell 3. That's a drop of nearly 13 *million* albums from one album to the next - I don't know of any other artist or group who can claim such a (dubious) honor.

(To answer a question before it's asked: "Boston" - 16 million, "Don't Look Back" - 7 million, "Third Stage" - 4 million. "Third Stage" was also the first *CD* to reach gold status.)

Props to Spiraling_Shape for being a fraud and a fake.

As far as one hit wonders, I'm gonna have to go with the Crash Test Dummies. Superman's Song got some small airplay down here in the States, but other than "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm," we haven't really heard from them.

Heh, the only reason I threw Barenaked Ladies up there was to see if anyone would catch it. I knew Rock Spectacle went gold, Stunt went platinum, I believe Maroon went plat as well, and Greatest Hits might get there before it's said and done. Not sure what I was thinking when I brought them up...

And thanks, spf, for giving me the title of the other Crows CD.

How about the Spice Girls' first album? Granted you made not have liked them or their music, but a lot of people did, and what the hell ever happened to them? The one girl who had posed nude left to be a UN goodwill ambassodor or something and they have never been heard from since.

Thread is lot of fun so far...i am terribly sorry for the Pearl Jam mention (was based on sales on that one..sorry) and the Eagles (i don't know what i was thinking).

More albums i thought off...

Papa Roach...anybody know if they broke up or something?
Sister Hazel
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
I hate to say this but Lauryn Hill right now is in here, since she hasnt released anything else.
I will say that 3 Doors down possibly will end up in this list also if they don't release soon.

No, they had TWO hit albums. I know this because my younger brother bought them BOTH and played them what seemed like for an eternity. I think I hugged him when he stopped listening to that carp.

Actually, they're second album is due out in June. Supposedly its supposed to be light on the hip-hop and heavier on the rock. But, in the same sentence, the lead singer was bragging about the beats that the DJ put on this one. I won't hold my breath for that heavy on the rock business. Also, from the what it's worth department, it took them 3 weeks to record.

GooooDAY!

Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Well the BossTones have been around for years, and had the one fluke hit at the right time, kinda like the aforementioned Butthole Surfers. A band everyone had heard of, but had never had a big mainstream hit.

I don't know if it's because I live in the Boston area, but the Bosstones don't strike me as one-hit wonders. I can think of a pretty solid list of Bosstones singles that got airplay around here, including "the impression that I get," "where did you go," "the rascal king," "royal oil," and that knock on wood song, which may or may not be entitled "knock on wood."

And spf, I'll jump on that "soft bulletin" bandwagon.

"knock on wood song" = The Impression That I Get

Yeah, they`ve had a number of minor singles, but only one huge hit that still gets a lot of national airplay.

The "living in Boston" comment got me thinking of MY hometown (Portland, OR), and that brought me another brilliant "one album wonder"...Quarterflash's self-titled album. "Harden my Heart", "Find Another Fool", "Right Kind of Love", and to a limited degree maybe "Valerie"...

I also also going to say Nu Shooz, but that was really a one-HIT wonder...

I just thought of adding Bad English to the mix. I would add Damn Yankees, but I don't know if their 1st album would be considered a "hit"

Well, DY's first album had "Coming of Age" and the ballad "High Enough" on it, and both got some MTV-play, at least, so I'd wager it qualifies as a "hit."

But yes, Damn Yankees is definitely a one-hit album band.

Anyone mention Soul Asylum yet? Grave Dancer's Union was a pretty big hit, and the lucky piece of crap lead singer got to date Winona Ryder for a while. Their follow-up had "Misery", their best song IMO, but it tanked and we never heard from them again.
