I'm not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn't bought it yet, but I was VERY disappointed with their choice for who the new Joker turned out to be. Also, I liked to see the return of old GL, as well.
Also, this series MOST defnitely isn't over. I see one more three parter coming out some years from now, most definitely.

The big rumor is that Miller has a Dark Knight Universe ongoing in the works for DC right now. One of the big indicators that this is true is he's no longer putting out SIN CITY from Dark Horse. I'm sure there'll be a big announcement this weekend at San Diego. | odessasteps

I'm sure the next thing won't be coming out until Frank needs money again. Let's hope DC is smart enough to apply its usual rules next time around and doesn't solicit anything until it's done. | ICEMAN

Eh, I liked it. I knew it wasn't everybody's peice of cake. There HAD been too much stuff similar too, for fanboys to compare it, too. But, all in all, I was entertained and I let a couple of friends read it and they got into comics because of it. And that's the whole point isn't it? Me, personally, I think people had too much expectation going in.
But, I liked it. Plus, if there WAS a Dark Knight series and universe, I'd be ALL over it. It's better than some of the crap I've read recenlty in Detective and Batman itself (that'll change when Jim Lee and Tim Sale take over, I hope). | skorpio17

I liked the real batman stuff, the trial, the Fugitive. It has a 22 part epic, but it was pretty good. Gotham Knights is a consistantly good comic/
The new Dark Knight, I liked the first half of issue one. Once they started beating the crap out of Superman, I tuned out. | WhoBettahThanDeion

But, he's good. And I think he'll do even better with his GCPD series, because that's more up his alley. Plus, I think of Supes as a "too good to be true" guy that needs his butt kicked every now and then. Plus, if you read the rest, you'd understand he was working for the bad guys. Period. He went against everything he believed in to save the last remnants of his homeland. And, I think Batman was right. Did you read the original series? Supes and Bats got into it then, too. I just can;t get behind a hero who can't die or possibly be beaten except by one peice of rock that's found in 1 percent of the earth. He's too indestructable. | Jakegnosis

| #8 Posted on 31.7.02 2248.17 Reposted on: 31.7.09 2255.27 | I hated DK2, personally. I haven't read part 3 yet, and I probably will, for some masochistic reason, but so far the series has me pissed.
Superman has always been my favorite superhero, and I think Miller has absolutely no conception of how Big Blue thinks. Supes in DKR made a certain amount of sense- he makes a deal with the government to stay low-profile so he can continue to save lives unhindered by the US. That makes sense in a way. But there is NO DAMN WAY Superman would work for Luthor and Brainiac. Not Superman, not EVER. I just think Miller hates Superman and wants to trash him. Superman has outsmarted Luthor and Brainiac so many times that there's no concievable way that he wouldn't be able to come up with a way to save Kandor and beat the bad guys, especially with help from Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, the two runner-ups for Supes' "Undisputed Superhero Badass" title. That was the first straw for me in DK2.
Then, there's the fact that Miller brings in so many superheroes that the story gets muddled. Flash, yes. Atom, yes. GL (another of my faves), yes. GA, yes. The Question? Why? J'onn J'onnz? Why, especially when he just gets killed? Guardian, ditto. And, this new Joker? WTF? We saw the Joker in DKR, he KICKED ASS, and that should be it. We've got Luthor in DK2, which is plenty o' villian- I love that guy. The jury's still out on Supes and WW's daughter. She could be important story-wise, but I'm not sure yet, because, as I said, I haven't built enough self-loathing up to go buy issue 3. Let's do a little comparison. In DKR, you had Batman, Robin, Two-Face (best villain ever) and the Joker. That way, we had lots of room for really, really good plot and character development. I don't think anyone would disagree that DKR was a quality comic. I'm not of the opinion that it could even touch Watchmen, but it was still very, very good. Now, look at DK2. It's all sound and fury, splash pages, new characters introduced constantly with no rhyme or reason, There is no character development to speak of, and it's a huge clusterfuck. Period. Now on to the final straw.
WORST
COLORING
EVER.
It looks like an oversized rave booklet. Lynn Varley had beautiful, understated colors in DKR, that added immeasurably to Miller's story. So... WHAT HAPPENED? It looks like she just pulled photoshop out of the box for the first time and went apeshit with the paintbucket. It is absolutely the ugliest coloring job I have ever seen, and I've been a comic book fan since I was five. The first thing I can remember reading is a Spider-Man comic. I have seen some terrible people go in and out of the business, especially in the Image age of the early nineties, but this is the ugliest comic ever. The coloring ruins Miller's art, which, IMHO is terrible compared to the absolutely fantastic stuff he did in Sin City. What's up with everybody wearing bicycle shorts. Did Flash and Wonder Woman suddenly sign up to go biking with Lance Armstrong?
All right, that's enough bashing. There were a few bits that I actually enjoyed. The fact that the president was a computer program was funny as hell. I like Jimmy Olsen's role as a lunatic fringe commentator. Green Arrow is good, too, I'm a huge Ollie mark. I think that's it so far. Part three better pull out some serious plot resolution, to get this series even **1/2 stars from this fan. Shame on you, Frank. | ICEMAN

| #11 Posted on 1.8.02 0755.09 Reposted on: 1.8.09 0759.01 | Part of the reason Miller used so many superheroes is becasue this was to be the setup for a new series. I'm not sure whether it's full go or not, so that explains why he would kill Martian Manhunter.
As for Superman working for Brainiac and Luthor, it goes more in-depth about that in issue 3. Even though, I think the fact that Brainiac is willing to kill the last thousand Kryptonians left should be a hint.
The coloring was new, and while I didn't like it at first, it's kind of grown on me. And it's really strong especially in the opening of issue 3 (the aftermath of the Metropolis attack, which is also, I believe why the series was held back).
I can't defend the story anymore because if you don't like it, that's your business. But, like a lot of the projects Miller's done since 1987 (I'm guessing your talking about Batman Year One, there). Rusty and Big Guy for one, 300 (which I've apparently lost), and various others.
As for Superman, I read an article where Superman was supposed to represent America in the series. He's kind a of a run down superhero who once used to value truth, justice and the American way, but somewhere along the path had to alter his ideals based on what was going on around him. Superman got older and grew as a character, but not for the greater good. I mean this is still 23 years after Batman has retired and all the Superhero's disappear (because of some choice Supe's had to make). I love it when they do a futuristic series and the author has a different idea of how the characters are presented and people bitch (especially the "Superman would NEVER DO THAT!" argument). It's the FUTURE! It's an author's TAKE! It's open to different outcomes, etc, etc.
Plus, I hate Supes. I hate the idea of Supes. But, DK2 is the first series where I actually cared for him because he was something I've never seen in his regular series...human. His tragedy is Herculean, and the years and years of saving the world have taken their toll. Also, I like the idea of the Superhero's getting older. I'm tired of seeing the same 33 year old Batman I've seen since I was five. Seeing Superman's spitcurl never change. The characters are older and it's somewhat tragic how saving the world ruined all their lives. Plus, if they do decide to do a regular series, I'm on for the long haul, as long as it's Miller and ONLY Miller doing the stories/art.
And, I liked the art, too. It almost reminds me of when he did DareDevil with Jansen (who's colors I like BETTER than Varley's) and the heroes all had kind of disproportionate bodies with big hand and feet. There's something about a superhero having monsterous hands to club and grab villains with.

It is? Hm. I thought he was using the so many superheroes because he, you know, actually LIKES them and just wanted to tell a story different in tone that DKR. Hm. But what do I know, eh?

Actually, Miller used J'onn's death to convey the level of THREAT they're facing. J'onn is one of the single most powerful characters in the DCU.

He actually ADDED the attack. He didn't change anything in the book for sensitivity's sake at all. If anything, he worsened it as a reaction. | odessasteps
