Well, I don't know if that's a worthy example of vigilante justice; sounded like an accident as much as anything, and I hope the people who reacted as they did spend some time in a cell block with someone named Billy Ray to think over their actions. It's terrible that those women got hurt, but to this point, they're all still alive, which is more than can be said for the people in the van. Very much the polar opposite of Bystander Syndrome. The line I found amusing in the whole disturbo bit was the mother who said her son couldn't be driving because he didn't have a license. Yeah, like that stops a whole lot of people.

Loathe as I am to look like I'm defending mob violence, it seems like there have been a LOT of cases of people recklessly plowing into people and then getting off with slaps on the wrist here in Chicago over the years. I'm not saying that was the driving force behind this, but I think considering what I've seen of this (car speeds up before hitting people), I think there may have been a sense in the back of some people's minds that this was the only way these folks would get punished at all for possibly killing a couple of people (no one knew they'd all survive at the time).

And to be honest, I really don't think you're going to get a jury here to convict any of these people.

What would the motive have been for these two guys to hit girls with a van? I'm not getting how this is "justice" here at all.

DMC, the sad thing is that some people hurt people because they can. While I don't think that mob rule is the way to go, it's also not necessarily unjust (as in cruel and unusual) punishment for the perpetrators to be roughed up by the community for crimes committed against it.

But was this even a premeditated crime? It may have been an accident that resulted in a violation of the law, but the chances of two old men going out of their way to hurt people on the sidewalk are pretty slim. Sure, they shouldn't have gone off the road and hit people for any reason, but only a nimrod would think to compound a mistake with another mistake.

According to police, it was a "'drastic and improper' U-turn" (Chicago Sun-Times) when the van lost control. To me, a very hot summer and a bad accident leads to what happened.

Just as the police official said on WGN's news, it's not vigilante action -- it's a double homicide. I'm waiting for when Dick Wolf turns this into a L & O: CI plot.
