Reposted on: 30.7.09 0042.23 | Every Monday night a group of friends and I watch Raw and we had been intrigued by the commercials for the new Sport on TNN, "Slamball." When a commercial came on during Raw saying that there would be a showing of Slamball on right after Raw, we definitely felt like we had to check it out...
What we saw was a very exciting, and hopefully enduring new brand of basketball, with elements of hockey and football. We all agreed that it seemed to be a live action version of NBA Jam.
We are definitely looking forward to spending an hour each Saturday night at 8pm to check out this new sport. Hopefully, it can catch on because it looks to be a winner.
And if you watched it, what did you think of that dunk that Inches (that guy on the Mob) did?? AMAZING!

That said, what did I think? I actually like it. I mean, some of the backstory is stupid, but you get a bunch of street players dunking with trampolines, and the rules make it a great game. Like Dirk said, it really looked like a live-action version of NBA Jam. Will I go out of my way to watch? Not really. But if it's on, I'll be entertained. | Tom Dean

Then the media piles on to reinforce it. Which is not to say, for instance, that the XFL folded because people were closeminded or because the media slammed it. The XFL folded because it simply sucked. But even if it hadn't sucked, it still would have gotten the same "please don't bother us with an attempt at a new sport" reaction IMO, because that's how people tend to be for whatever reason. Reposted on: 30.7.09 1029.01 | I gave it a shot for a bit to see if it would be fun, but I'll pass. It was like watching a mascot dunk contest that didn't end. I think having someone jump off a trampoline and dunk on every play kind of misses what makes a dunk stand out in a real game, and there weren't any real plays or passing or anything interesting like that. Looked like it would be a neat half time event or something at an All-Star Game fanfest, but not an actual game.
Maybe if they had them on bungee cords like Thunderdome, so they could do big leaping passes at halfcourt or something. Chainsaws on the wall would be optional
I did think the bit where the guy who invented Slam Ball got called for a foul and noted USU Announcer Reggie Theus said "Don't pretend like you don't know the rule, you invented it!" was funny, though. | The Great Thomas

HUH?!?!? How in the devil can baseball not be a team sport? It's the only sport out there where one player can't dominate an entire game, such as say Michael Jordan did with the Bulls.
Regarding slamball, looks like I need to check it out. Looks like it could either be really good, or really really bad.

Not true, every run is a cooperation. How does a runner score unless his teammate knocks him in (except for a homerun). And on defense every ball that is in play is cooperation because last time i saw after the pitcher pitches it he doesn't run to the outfield and catch it himself. Sure it does have a lot of one on one matchups, but so does basketball (like Shaq vs. Vlade or Kidd vs. Payton) at some points in the game and so does football (receiver vs. defensive back or d-lineman vs. o-lineman). All team sports have one on one matchups but are still team sports. And like Grimis said it's the only sport where one player doesn't dominate, or alteast it's more rare. You can always make anything sound like a question of degree, but I dunno why. Seems clear to me that there's a fundamental difference between a sport where all the offensive players can be on the field at once and one where they can't.
On defense, as I said, "The defense isn't involved at all on many plays, and if it is, it's usually one guy who either makes the play or doesn't." There isn't "team defense" like there is in other sports, except on those specific, relatively rare plays I mentioned.
These unique characteristics of baseball are why individual statistics in baseball are particularly meaningful, and why baseball is easier than other sports to simulate in a board game. | drjayphd

I may be reaching, but Player Y can take a fat lead and, if he's fast enough, get the pitcher thinking about Player Y stealing instead of getting Player Z out. Pickoff throws, getting the ball to the plate fast enough, etc. Watch Ichiro or Soriano on the paths and tell me they don't have some effect on the pitcher.
