There are times when money is wasted. Mark Henry is halfway through a $10 million contract. WCW was bought and buried for $2.5 million. Recently Tom Hicks, owner of the Texas Rangers, complained that he was losing money due to the structure of baseball. He was pleading for other owners to share their revenue stream with him. This is the same guy who spent $252 million on A-Rod (one baseball player). And he wonders why he is losing money.

The newest example is the U.S. Postal Service. Our government institution is spending $25 million to sponsor the cycling team of Lance Armstrong. Of course USPS has a monopoly on regular mail, so they don’t need to spend on advertising to convince us to use their services. It is not like we have a choice. Also, they are bothering with a sport like bicycle racing that most Americans don’t watch. Their response might be that the Tour de France is a huge sporting event in Europe. Having their brand identified with a racing champion can increase their overseas revenue.

This is totally wrong. People in France have an anti-American bias. They don’t like our politics, our McDonalds, or Lance Armstrong. In fact they totally hate Lance Armstrong. He is an American winning their sport in their country. They chant, “Dopay” at him every time they see him. “Dopay” is supposed to result from his suspected doping (steroid drug use). They think that since he is so dominant in racing, he must be cheating. Now, this might be fair to direct at a baseball player or professional wrestler. Or another sport where they have no testing and wink at drug use. But, Lance Armstrong has passed every drug test he ever took. There is no evidence to the contrary.

Now, I know you are thinking, “I don’t care about a stupid bicycle race or France. This doesn’t affect me.”
That is where you are wrong. The post office just raised the price of stamps from .34 to .37. They said it was necessary because they were losing money to the internet. (Don’t you feel guilty for using all that free e-mail?) All this just to get people who don’t like us to associate a brand they don’t use with a person they don’t like. Something to think about the next time you buy some stamps.

Just for clarification, the USPS is not a government institution, just one with a government imposed monopoly. Kinda like Amtrak(same as far as hemmoraging money too).

I'm not afraid to say it, I hate France. If the USPS would have given Lance and the rest of the team sidearms, they could have taken over the country easily.

And that cycling team consists of 8 other racers, plus mechanics, etc. who don't just race the Tour and leave it at that. It covers a bit more ground than just 3 weeks. Probably factors out to around 1-2 mil per rider/year, after expenses. If the USPS wants to recoup that money, they can just run their business better. Tell them to talk to Dell or something.

No don't do that. Dell will just tell them to hire the schmuck to say "Dude you're getting a rate increase!"

True that the team is more than just Lance Armstrong. But, lets be honest. Armstrong is the one getting all the money. The rest of the team is a bunch of jobbers who make Lance look good. If they didn't want to lose money they could try cutting expenses.

Hey are you guys with the Un-Americans? haha, just kidding.
I have no problem with the USPS sponsoring Lance Armstrong. I doubt this is the first time they sponsored an event like this so I won't criticize their rate hike.
I think it's worth it to stick it to the rest of the world and show what American Sprit is all about. I mean, the guy came back from freakin cancer and won the race 4 times. U-S-A! U-S-A!
Jay Leno had a joke about Lance riding into Paris unopposed. He said the Germans were impressed, they only did it twice. Haha.

Is that an informed opinion of some sort? Or are you spouting "jobbers" because you don't keep up with cycling and assume that, because they don't win the Tour and that's the only race you know about, that they must be useless? They are actually useful to Lance during the Tour - staying together in a group can be a necessity in the non-mountain stages - and they race in plenty of places. Hincapie is no Lance, but he's not a "jobber", either; he does actually win races. Just not the Tour.
