Ars Technica (via Deadspin) has a source saying the magazine is coming to an end. The magazine had been outsourced to Future Publishing:

But our source says that Nintendo, which was always "difficult to work with," was uninterested in renewing that contract or in taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand. He added that Nintendo doesn't seem interested in taking over direct control of the magazine again (Nintendo and Future representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story).

Nintendo Power editors and staffers were told of the magazine's impending shuttering last week, the source said, and are currently being transitioned to work on other Future properties,

Like many others, I read it when I was kid, only vaguely was aware it was still around, but am sad to see it go. It seems odd Nintendo wouldn't keep the name around in some way (and they might be; this is all coming from the publisher), but it's a different era.

Shoot, I still have a subscription (nostalgia is a tough habit to kick) ... Got every issue going all the way back to Claymation King Wart.

Sad news if true :(

I'm in the same boat as Cubs; I had this magazine as a kid. In fact, it was the only magazine I had ever subscribed to until Entertainment Weekly about five years ago. I knew it was still around only because I would randomly see issues at a Gamestop store and marvel that it was still being published. I will miss the adventures of little NES and Howard.

Even though it was certainly biased in their game reviews, it was a wealth of information when it came to their games. I also liked the comic strips as well.

The issue with the Secret of Mana guide in it was invaluable to me as a kid. INVALUABLE. I'd have never gotten through that game without it I think.

We'll always have Dragon Warrior. Unless you sold it already.

Yeah, I guess it's a sign of the times with magazines decreasing by the bunch these days. It's sad because I remember Nintendo Power being such a big deal with my friends in the early 90's. This was before we all had the ability to use the internet to find clues about passing levels and defeating the games so any hints or tips they gave us at the time was such a huge help. I also liked the comic stories they had for Zelda and Star Fox, among others. Too bad, another good memory of my childhood gone for the ages.

Oh man, yes. I was never a huge Nintendo Power guy but I did subscribe for one year for the free Dragon Warrior. I killed so many slimes.
