Nothing sells quite like nostalgia.

'ALF' Movie Lands at Sony Animation With 'Smurfs' Producer (Exclusive)

Sony Pictures Animation has closed a deal to acquire rights to the classic 1980s sitcom ALF and will develop the property into a hybrid CG/live action feature.

Jordan Kerner, who produced SPA’s adaptation of 1980s Saturday morning cartoon staple The Smurfs and helped turn it into a hybrid blockbuster franchise, will produce the project with show creators Tom Patchett, a veteran of 1970s comedies, and puppeteer Paul Fusco.

As bad as The Smurfs movie was, I can totally understand why it did so well. Small, cute creatures sell. Worked for Alvin and the Chipmunks, right? ALF is neither small, nor cute.

I just hope they can restrain themselves and keep ALF from actually eating cats on-screen.

This has trainwreck written all over it...so why am I looking forward to it? What is so damn appealing about ALF?

Is it because ALF was a staple in America in the 80's? Remember the ALF hand puppets from McDonalds?

Actually Burger King.

I was a huge ALF fan in elementary school and have been watching the reruns on The Hub from time to time. I wouldn't say they "hold up" so much as I have a soft spot for a show I watched a bazillion times as a kid.

The Muppets aren't *all* cute, but they've done fairly well with the recent movies, too. I feel like ALF was my introduction to the wonderful world of sarcasm, so if they keep that aspect of the character, it could be more of a draw than the Smurfs were, at least.
