The Knicks got a PG... Ray Felton Click Here (espn.go.com)

Wow, Lin might really be gone. 14.8 million in year 3 is a crazy amount of money to pay for him and I kind of want to make the Rockets eat that money, but I was getting into the idea of Lin being under Jason Kidd's wing and the money in Lin propaganda would have made up for the 14.8 million plus tax and then some.

Also another problem with Lin is he was a success in the D'Antoni reckless offense. I think he will be a solid player, but I'd be shocked if he became great. 14.8 million is an insane poison pill to swallow, but it would be in an expiring year of his deal so if he was bench warming it might be movable.

If The Knicks don't match it's because he's not a Woodson guy and not a Melo guy.

If you look at the trade without the Lin part, it's actually a nice pickup for the Knicks. Felton and another reliable big body off the bench in Kurt Thomas.

Lost in all this is the end of my Bromance with Jared Jeffries. I'll miss your goofy charge taking ass.

Is Houston setting a record for juggling the most chainsaws in one off-season? They seem to be trying to run 5 separate plans, and probably are going to end up in salary cap hell with a 23 win season in about 3 years.

I can't tell if Darrell Morey made the Lin offer fully believing the Knicks would match, but this looks like it's set to backfire on him, big time. Howard isn't going to play for them and if he gets traded there, I think he dogs it for the whole season. And they just amnestied Scola, who was one of their best players? If Jeremy Lin is your biggest offseason pickup (and maybe one of you best players, period), you've failed as a GM.

The Knicks were going to match until that third year went up in price and became fully guaranteed, which makes you really wonder what Morey is doing.

Melo called the Lin contract crazy, which it is, but will make things really awkward The Knicks do end up matching. Also, I might call the money Melo is making crazy for what he has produced for The Knicks thus far.

I said earlier that Lin might not be a Woodson or Melo guy, but maybe Lin just wants to get away from them. He could have come to back to NY for a little less money and tried to make it up in bigger endorsements, but chose the guaranteed money instead. I can't say I blame him, but I also don't blame NY from backing off their claim of matching anything up to a billion dollars either.

The other difference is the cap hit for each team. The Rockets would take a cap hit, each year of the contract, that amounts to the average of the salary owed for the length of the contract. It works out to about an $8 mil hit each year. The Knicks, if they match, would have to take a face-value hit every year of the contract. Which is fine until the poison pill garunteed final year kicks in. The Rockets aren't as dumb as I originally thought, but barely not. That's a lot of cash for an unproven commodity.

I'm not totally sure how the amnesty rules work, but couldn't the Rockets just use the amnesty clause on Lin for the final year of his deal, if it comes to that?

1. The amnesty clause ends this year. Use it or lose it.

2. The Rockets stupidly* used the amnesty clause on Luis Scola, one of their best players, in a long-shot hope of landing Dwight Howard.

* - Of course, change the word "stupidly" to "ingeniously" if the Howard trade and extension actually happen.

Well, you're wrong. As per Larry Coon's CBA FAQ (cbafaq.com):

For the 2012-13 through 2015-16 seasons it is available for the first seven days that follow the July moratorium (see question number 101). The waiver period for amnestied players is 48 hours.

It only applies to players who are under the same contract that was in place on July 1, 2011, so anyone who's been extended since then is out. But it's more likely that everyone will just run out of eligible players.

The Hornets, for example, had precisely ONE amnesty-eligible player after trading their likely candidates (Okafor and Ariza) to Washington for Rashard Lewis (saving the Wizards the trouble of amnestying him)... then New Orleans traded that one player, Jarrett Jack, to the Warriors. So if Eric Gordon turns into a pumpkin with eight billion sprained seeds, they're stuck with him for the next four years. They can't amnesty anyone until the next time the NBA and union agree on a new CBA with an amnesty clause.

For the record as a Knick fan I am really bummed about how this played out. I'm not sold on Lin and he may or may not be good, but I liked the idea of him on the team. Now it is just team Melo and that just doesn't excite me. With the contracts and age of this team the Knicks might have missed their last chance to add a young exciting player for years to come.

I agree with everything you've said, but it looks like Jeremy Lamb might not be anything to sneeze at.

I like the line that someone used on Grantland but how much of a coincidence it is that the franchise that knows the most about about how much marketing money you can make with a Chinese star on their team ended up with a Chinese star on their team.

Will the Houston Rockets win a championship with Jeremy Lin? Maybe, maybe not.

Will they make a crapload of money marketing him, waaaaaaay more than they spent to hire him? Oh yes.
