The 2012 NBA Draft will take place June 28, only two days after a potential Game 7 of the NBA Finals, assuming the Thunder somehow manage to stretch it that far.

But the trading has begun.

The New Orleans Hornets have agreed to trade center Emeka Okafor and swingman Trevor Ariza to the Washington Wizards for forward Rashard Lewis and a second-round draft pick.

Washington holds both the 32nd and 46th picks in the second round (the latter obtained from Dallas), and the story doesn't make it clear which one will be relayed to the Hornets.

I like this trade for New Orleans, Rashard Lewis's awful contract ends after next season, so either they get a lot of cap room from the expiring deal, or a good trade chip to send to another team trying to create cap room for free agency next year.

They're reportedly waiving Lewis by month's end, which will knock another $10M off his salary. They really didn't need him to be anything but an escape hatch for their two bad contracts, so we'll just sum up my thoughts on this trade (from the Hornets angle) thusly:

Let's not forget to mention how great this is for Washington.

Okafor never lived up to his potential, but he's a great (GREAT) veteran addition to a young team that is starting to be built around John Wall. I believe he averages a double-double (or close to it) for his career. Ariza is nothing to sneeze at either. AND you get rid of Rashard Lewis? Yeah, this trade is aces for Washington.

Okafor has averaged 12.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in his career, but played in only 27 games this year due to injury.

Trevor Ariza has career averages of 9.0/4.4/1.9, but he's averaged better than that in each of the last three seasons since becoming a starter with the Rockets and Hornets. This year he averaged 10.8/5.2/3.3, starting in each of the 41 games he appeared.

Lewis is a 14-year veteran well past his prime years in Seattle, but he was a respectable 11.7/5.1/1.6 last year with Orlando and Washington. This year he played only 28 games, going 7.8/2.7/1.0.

And according to, he made $21 million this year. That's the problem you run into with these back-loaded contracts.

The Bobcats are sending Corey Maggette to the Pistons in exchange for Ben Gordon and a protected first-round pick that could come as early as 2013.

It's lottery-protected for '13, top-eight protected in '14, and #1-protected in '15 before finally becoming unprotected in '16. So theoretically, we may have to wait four years to see how this pick pans out for the Bobcats.

Gordon's owed $25.6M over the next two years, while Maggette's expiring deal is worth $10.9.

In other news, the Boston Celtics will receive a second-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder as compensation in a dispute over Jeff Green's medical status.

And the Houston Rockets traded Chase Budinger to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 18th pick in this year's draft, meaning that at the moment, Houston is picking 14th, 16th and 18th. Quite the little Ping-Pong game they'll have going on for a little while, unless more trades are to come. is saying they wanna get Dwight Howard.
