What a gorgeous book. Amanda Conner's art is amazing. She and Darwyn Cooke took the least interesting character in Watchmen, the token girl, and made Laurie Jupiter young, beautiful, and vibrant. We see Laurie at 16 and what kind of an amazing girl she was, and we can understand in new ways how Dr. Manhattan looked across the room at that first Crimebusters meeting and what he saw in her. She's pretty incredible. Structurally, Silk Spectre #1 feels like Watchmen, with use of period music lyrics to underscore the actions. We get to see exactly what it was like to be raised by Sally Jupiter, and even the extreme measures she took to train her daughter to follow in her footsteps, and it all echos Watchmen brilliantly while moving in its own direction and being its own unique thing. There's so much depth to the characterizations and the 1966 setting is spot-on. And again, the art is GORGEOUS. Conner and Cooke give Laurie Jupiter the due Watchmen never really had the time or interest to give her. Can't say enough good things.

Very pleased to see Newsarama (newsarama.com) give it a 10/10. I agree. Silk Spectre is a 10.

Yeah this was good. Conner & Cooke are one of those comics dream teams and they delivered here.

Years after this Before Watchmen stuff is concluded and out in trades, it will be interesting to see younger folk reading Watchmen after they've already read all of these origin stories. That's how I experienced the first Star Wars trilogy and I definitely have a different view of the story from other people I know.

Here's a link to first 5 pages if anyone's interested in checking it out: http://www.bleedingcool.com/forums/front-page-comic-news/59520-five-pages-before-watchmen-silk-spectre-1-a.html

made me gasp.

And this is wonderful. Look at how the spotlight creates the globe outline.
