This is a bummer.

Cops are currently at Seau's home -- located in San Diego County -- and were seen talking with a man who was inside the house and appeared distraught.

We're told Seau sent text messages to his ex-wife and 3 kids yesterday saying, "Love you." We're told they all responded and didn't suspect anything was wrong. We're told he last saw his kids 3 weeks ago.

Sources close to Seau tell us family members didn't notice any signs of depression in recent weeks.

He shot himself in the chest, which is the same way that Dave Duerson killed himself. Duerson did so with the express intent of having his brain examined for concussion trauma. It's early, but I wouldn't be surprised if Seau's motive (and cause) was the same.

RIP.

I immediately thought of concussion reasons too... Just sad, sad stuff.

And another incident making it harder and harder to be a fan of this sport/league anymore. It almost feels like there's less cognative dissonance about injuries/health following *wrestling* than football in 2012.

Seau was a hell of a player, respected by teammates, opponents and fans across the sport for his ability, toughness and leadership. I don't want to get ahead of the story, although -

The police chief of Oceanside, Calif., confirmed on Wednesday that former NFL star Junior Seau was found by his girlfriend with a gunshot wound to the chest in what appears to be a suicide.

- the parallel to Duerson. Suicide by chest-shot is a greusome way to do it, I've read that it's not necessarily the instant death that a head-shot is. Even if it turns out Seau didn't leave instructions, this sounds like a form of protest at minimum.

Somewhat related (and hopefully not too great a threadjack), it occurs to me that the WWE "no blood" rule needs to be looked at. Thinking back to WrestleMania's Hell in a Cell match when Taker obviously started pounding HHH's head to break him open hard-way, Lesnar on Raw the second week when he busted Cena in the mouth hard-way, at Extreme Rules when Lesnar was obviously throwing those elbows at Cena's head to break him open hard-way..

Wouldn't it be better to just fake the head trauma, and let guys gig themselves on rare occasions if they get permission? Or at least make the penalties stiff enough so no one will 'go into business for themselves' (even in tandem, to try and make their match standout with color)?

I for one never complain when someone throws up a hand to block a chair to the head, and I don't mind no chairs to the head at all either - you can do "ringsteps off the head", or "tv monitor off the head"..

but to have a "safety" policy where guys are inflicting actual blows to the head to get around the policy is counterproductive. That third elbow Brock hit Cena with may have been harder than the one that got Ron Artest suspended 7 games.

That sucks. I hated when my team played against him, but loved him when he became one of the Pats.

Seau was one of my favorites.

That being said, there was no reason for him to be on the field as long as he was. With the NFL (and NCAA) having a lower age limit, they should have a mandatory retirement age as well.

Not to hijack the thread either, but I believe the "no blood" rule may be more for keeping their PG rating and keeping Mattel happy than it is for a safety concern (Bob Orton excluded).

The problem is the punishment with the no blood rule is: "Vince/Triple H will decide how mad to get about it." That makes it an arbitrary rule that can be waived for "certain matches."

I'm not really sure what punishment you could do though that would work. Fine them? Who pays, the guy who did the hitting? What's to stop him from saying the other guy bladed? Suspensions would be the same. And if you do fine them, does anyone really think guys like John Cena, Triple H, Taker, etc will have to pay a fine to the company? Sure, Miz will pay whatever they make him, but the top stars will get special treatment because they always do. I really don't know what to do to fix guys really beating each other up in a sport where the point is to fake beating each other up.

Very sad.

Not totally surprising, considering the incident two years ago when he drove his car off a cliff.

I don't feel good about the way the mother was trotted out there for that press conference that they keep showing. I don't know the circumstances behind it, but it should have waited.

Saddest news I've heard in a long while. What's more, whatever information that comes out in the next few days will only make it sadder.

What's more, every time I see someone wearing 55 I'll remember him.

Headed past his house on my way home tonight and there were about 20 news vans parked on the Strand. His house is about six blocks from mine and I'd see him around town regularly. Was eating breakfast at the same place as him last week...
