Luck canceled by HBO. (insidetv.ew.com) Dead horses on the set the cause. Unlike Game of Thrones, which killed horses for fake, Luck inadvertently killed them for real.

From looking at the previews, I thought this was a show about Dustin Hoffman's character and his shady dealings/associates involved in running a horse track. From the reviews, I'm more surprised to hear that they had a second season greenlight in the first place.

Not having watched any of episodes, was it that part of the narrative was about jockeys, and they need close-up scenes of exciting track action to tell the story?

Otherwise you'd think they could get by with cutting in actual race footage, and just use the nags as background for paddock scenes.

Sad news. Kind of sounds like HBO was railroaded by animal interest groups. Horses die at the racetrack, just like the die at home. The latest accident sounds like it was an absolute accident that nobody could have prevented.

Three horses dying during the series seems like a lot. It sounds like the ASPCA had issues with them before this latest death happened.

I call shenanigans.

Two horses died in season one, and they greenlit a second (I assume before they started airing the first season, and the ratings were in.)

If you're gonna have two horses die and renew it, one more during the next season is NOT gonna cancel a show.

The cynic in me (read: all of me) thinks this show was cancelled cause it apparently has ratings of a million per episode, which seems like it might be the lowest of the HBO shows.

Two horses die every day at US race tracks. Having two die in the months it takes to film an HBO series (which I assume is at least 12 weeks, if not double that) does not seem like a very high number.

Having owned horses for 30+ years, not necessarily. The third horse reared, fell backward and hit his/her head and had to be put down. You honestly never know how they will behave, they are unpredictable.

And as strong as they seem, they can be amazingly fragile, especially their digestive systems and leg/hoof area.
