Figured I'd go ahead and mirror the other thread since we all know it is coming.

What TV shows do you feel IMPROVED with a replacement cast member?

As a huge "NCIS" fan, I'd have to go with Ziva David replacing Kate Todd, and Director Vance replacing Director Shepherd.

As far as Reality TV goes, "Deadliest Catch" was about 1000000x more entertaining with the addition of the Hilstrand Brothers and the Time Bandit.

For me, it's Cheers, replacing Shelley Long with Kirstie Alley. I never paid attention to Cheers during the Sam and Diane years, but when Rebecca came on board, it was practically a brand new show and I loved it until the end, when the whole cast was pissing drunk on the Leno show.

Rebecca Howe > Diane Chambers

Mind you, I think I was about 12 when Kirstie Alley joined Cheers so I was a little young for Sam and Diane.

As stated in the other thread. Sheridan, Bruce Boxlietner, replacing Sinclair, Michael O'Hare, was a godsend for Babylon 5. It gave the show a breath of fresh air and Bruce had a better feel for the show and character. He brought a much needed presence.

I also go with Kristie Alley over Shelly Long. The show before that was all about Sam and Diane which in any show is going to have a limited amount of interest. They rightful made the show about Sam wanting the bar back and the characters around it. It was also better in the later seasons than the past ones.

I'd also go with David Tennant in Doctor Who. I liked the 9th Doctor, but 10 will always be my favorite and made it huge. Smith is just piggy backing on the show's success while still doing a great job.

Three's Company: Who came first? Furley or Roeper? Both were great in different ways.

Roper(s) -> Furley

Not a direct replacement, but I add replacing Cordelia Chase with Spike on Angel. The Cordelia character was so badly bungled in seasons 3 and 4, while Spike coming on board as Angel's rival/frenemy was a major shot in the arm for Angel's final Wolfram and Hart season.

I gotta say replacing Steve with Jefferson D'Arcy on Married With Children made it a whole new show. Ted McGinley brought a lot of energy to that show that just wasn't there before.

Here's another one: Replacing the Pembrokes with the Powells on Charles in Charge. Because it gave us Nicole Eggert.

And the other sister turned out even hotter. Though old CiC had Gwendolyn...

Re: MWC. When Jefferson replaced Steve it was entirely different. With Steve, the focus of the show was how awful the Bundy's were and how shocking it was to newlyweds Steve and Marci. When Steve left, it was more like The Simpsons where everyone was an oddball character.

As someone who is currently watching every episode of Cheers thanks to Netflix (it's easy to fall asleep to!), Kirstie Alley is a poor substitute for Diane. Diane was such a better foil to everyone in the bar. Rebecca just became one of the gang by the end.

Diane > Rebecca 9 times out of 10.

Speaking of Cheers, what about Coach vs. Woody ?

A draw?

Replacing Ted Dancing for Lawrence Fishburne on CSI has given the show some much needed character. Fishburne, while he is a great actor, really wasn't working out well on the show and Dancing is certainly a better fit for the role.

Jury is still out on Elizabeth Shue, who has never really been good in anything.

She was amazing in Adventures in Babysitting. I'll go with Woody as much as I liked Coach, Woody brought some youth to the cast.

I was trying to remember if the show changing so much had already happened, or if Jefferson coming on board was the catalyst for the change. As best as I can remember, the major turning point for the show happened with the changing of that character, so I figure the show changed due to a conscious effort by the writers to take advantage of a new character.

I'll also add Markie Post and Marsha Warfield taking over their roles on Night Court. Jon Stewart taking over for Kilborn on The Daily Show was a big improvement too.

Megan Mullaly for Jane Lynch on Party Down was surprisingly lateral at the time, and now Megan might have more all-important COMEDY CRED than Jane now because of the roles they've each done since the switch.

I love Ted Danson as the head guy on CSI, started watching it when Fishburne was on and it was okay...but Danson is a whole lot better.

Other than the ones mentioned any other changes I can think of, I don't think were better. Changing Kelly for Tori on SBTB, no way. David Rossi taking over Jason Gideon's spot on Criminal Minds, meh.

I absolutely love Michael J. Fox and I was really sad to see him have to leave Spin City. But with that said, they really did make the best of a terrible situation, because Charlie Sheen kept that show watchable.

You're thinking of Ellen Foley, Broadway star and the female vocalist on Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell." According to her Wikipedia page, she also did vocals on some Clash songs and was in a relationship with Mick Jones. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" is actually about she and Jones. This has been your random music fact of the day.

I agree wholeheartedly with John Orquiola about Spike replacing Cordelia. Xander was the reason I got into Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the first place, but Spike kept me watching till the series end. Season 4 was such a bummer after how they handled Cordy, that I freaked when they announced Marsters would be joining the cast of Angel as Blondie Bear again. Also Tribal Prophet is dead on about Jefferson D'arcy. I loved when Marcy would breakup Al's "No Ma'am" meetings only for Jefferson to sneak out the back undetected and reemerge beside her with a "Yes Ma'am" shirt.

This isn't a actor replacement so much as a character reinvention. Will Friedle as Eric Matthews from Boy Meets World switching from too cool generic older brother to manic, simple-minded, high strung, sneak-attacking, goofy living cartoon character probably kept that show alive more seasons than it should of.
