| #14 Posted on 26.7.02 0813.45 Reposted on: 26.7.09 0820.36 | Hey Qubber, I saw the sneak preview of Austin Powers last night with about 12 of my friends, all guys, and we agreed Beyonce was hot as hell in that movie. Oh my god was she hot... nice costumes that show off a lot of cleveage and breasts (she has incredible breasts... never noticed before this). Anyway, onto the movie I am so glad I went! It is funnier than the first two, and I think the funniest movie of the year. The whole theater laughed through the entire movie, the movie within a movie was great as well.... funniest intro to almost any movie EVER. Damn good movie, you need to see this!!
Rikidozian was right, the cameos are great and don't ruin the movie.

| #15 Posted on 26.7.02 2313.31 Reposted on: 26.7.09 2318.27 | I just got back from it. The first half hour is pretty slow (aside from the awesome credits sequence), but once the movie starts rolling, it's probably the funniest one yet.
The only real complaint I have is the very existence of the Goldmember character. I really don't see the point. He wasn't funny. Not even a bit. Oh well...
And the cameos were handled *extremely* cleverly, and they won't be a hinderance to the movie at all, trust me. In fact, most of the cameos are the best parts of the movie. | oldschoolhero

| #16 Posted on 27.7.02 0738.27 Reposted on: 27.7.09 0744.20 | | Eh. Saw it on Thursday and thought that while it had real laugh-out-loud scenes (the opening sequence, the International Man Of Mystery Academy, "MOLEY MOLEY MOLEY!"), a lot of it just dragged. Michael Caine just wasn't funny, and while Goldmember was an improvement over Fat Bastard he still didn't have me in stitches. Austin's fight with Mini-Me in the hotel room was priceless though. Overall, it doesn't beat the first two, but it's still worth a watch. | Jaguar

It was laugh out loud in a bunch of parts, and extremely funny, but it had no plot, no character developement (as in trying to make me care) or anything resembling a good movie in it. But damn was it funny. Two things I came away from the theater with.... I want to see the next LOTR (great preview, right up until the showed Gandalf the White ARGH) and AUSTINPUSSY. Goddamn, that would make me laugh so much.

| #18 Posted on 28.7.02 1517.24 Reposted on: 28.7.09 1529.01 | | It was pretty funny. I was afraid they would coast and just go "yeah, baby, behave" for 90 minutes, since that was already pretty much happening in APII. But that didn't really happen... they seem to be working to give it some themes and continuity, and come up with new stuff. The highlight for me, by a long shot, was the music video. That was the one thing that really had me in stitches, although everyone else in my theater was going nuts for everything that came on the screen. | WyldeWolf1

| #20 Posted on 28.7.02 1725.22 Reposted on: 28.7.09 1729.03 | My take on Goldmember...
The Good:
* DeVito's cameo was the funniest thing I saw all night.
* I could care less about Beyonce as a singer or as an image to wank to, but in a heavily stripped-down sidekick role in this movie, she was perfectly adequate. Certainly no worse than Heather Graham, who was wonderful eye candy but a frightening actress in #2.
* Verne Troyer owned the movie, as I expected. Whenever he wasn't on-screen, it suffered. Nice comic timing and slapstick antics.
* I didn't mind the flashback/Academy sequence.
The Bad:
* NO MORE RAP SEQUENCES. PLEASE. The musical number was stupefyingly bad.
* When a movie rehashes jokes from a predecessor, it's not a good omen. When a movie makes jokes ABOUT rehashing jokes from a predecessor -- MORE THAN ONCE -- it's REALLY not a good omen. When a movie does that and CONTINUES to rehash the jokes... ouch. This one was entertaining, but let the series end at #3 if that's all the ideas they have.
* For all the hype and word-of-mouth centered around the first ten minutes... I didn't care for it all that much. Too much Britney (for no good reason), not many good gags in the credits sequence, one cameo out of four in the mini-movie that was funny (though, as I said above, that one was hysterical).
* If they do make a fourth, ditch Goldmember. Pronto. Unfunny, intentionally disturbing, and not really funny or interesting.
* Michael Caine mailed in his performance.
* A typical problem with today's movies -- half the jokes that worked were in the commercials hyping it. (Mini-Austin and sharks-with-lasers come to mind.)
* And where was Mindy Sterling (Frau) in this one? One brief sequence with Dr. Evil and then about all she did was stand in the background and nod now and then.
All in all, it wasn't a BAD movie... I've paid to see a lot worse. It definitely had the feeling of contractually-obligated-sequel, however, and for my money, the second one was better as a whole. This one just didn't seem to have much in the way of inspiration, and a really disjointed screenplay. |
