More Power! Microsoft's New Xbox 720 Will Be 6x More Powerful

"More power!" You can imagine Steve Ballmer yelling it through Microsoft's halls but that's exactly what is happening with the Xbox 720, according to reports from IGN.

The next Xbox -- rumored to be the "Xbox 720" -- will ship to retailers in late October or early November 2013 and have six times the processing power of its predecessor, the Xbox 360, sources close to the project told IGN.

The next console will use the AMD 6000 series, which should run similar to the Radeon HD 6670. That all sounds a bit jargon-y but essentially it's a super-fast processor that supports DirectX11, multi-display output, 3D and 1080p HD. Production of the GPU should start by the end of this year.

All that anticipated extra power on the fabled Xbox 720 isn't just about graphic fidelity. It allows games to have more detailed environments, longer draw distances (think open world games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim), better enemy artificial intelligence, faster multiplayer experiences and the ability to cram more stuff on the screen.

Sony's PlayStation 3 won the tech arms race with the last generation of consoles however that gamble on technology didn't quite pay off. The PlayStation 3 was generally outsold by both the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii for years after its launch and the Wii had a slower processor than both of its competitors. (PS3 sales are making a steady comeback of late.) Will a more powerful Xbox finally dominate the market or should it watch out for Sony's next console and Nintendo's Wii U?

I used to support Nintendo's tech before I bought my first PSone - I thought the controller was solid and less gimmicky than the N64's - and when the PSP came out, it was my preferred handheld as the GBA, GBA SP, and all other Nintendo handhelds had incredibly small buttons. When the PS2 came out, I favoured that over the Xbox as I wanted a DVD player that didn't need some add-on to play discs.. I picked up a PS3 as I wanted a Blu-Ray player as well....something the Xbox360 didn't have.

I'm rambling, and I apologize, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that my love for Sony runs deep. I already have a Vita pre-ordered, and when the PS4 comes out, I will probably pick it up, too.

A question, though: are there any games that are better on the 360 than the PS3...and vice versa?

The PS3 port of "The Orange Box" was noticeably lacking in comparison to the Xbox 360 version. The metacritic scores for both the 360 and PC version averaged a 96, the PS3 version an 89. That's a huge difference when anything below 8 out of 10 for a major release is considered an insult. I'm sure there must be others, but that was the one that immediately came to mind. Here are a pair of articles that I found in a google search.

Apparently the 360 version of Bayonetta is superior, but the PS3 version of Final Fantasy 13 (and presumably 13-2) has better quality audio and is on one disc as opposed to three.
