The network sent a notice late Friday (Jan. 13) that it's pulling the low-rated, savagely reviewed sitcom after just two episodes. Tuesday's show drew 4.9 million viewers and a paltry 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.
So, that means "Cougar Town" is on its way back in the next week or two, right? Well, not immediately -- but that might not be such a bad thing.
ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee said earlier in the week that he wants to give Season 3 of "Cougar Town" a "very good launchpad" -- and dropping it into the timeslot of a failed sitcom with no time to promote it doesn't qualify.
For the rest of January, reruns of "Last Man Standing" will fill the 8:30 p.m. Tuesday spot on ABC. We wouldn't be surprised to see "Cougar Town" take over the time period in February, but if it's going to get a chance to succeed it needs at least a little bit of a promotional push -- and not just from the pockets of creators Kevin Biegel and Bill Lawrence.
We'll trade a couple weeks of reruns for a proper promotional campaign.
With "Work It" gone from the schedule, expect an announcement from ABC on its plans for the time period next week.
I had set the "Work It!" cancellation over/under as the premiere date of "¡Rob!" - which was Thursday, so it JUST made the over.

Including me, but I doubt I'll watch it again. I might give it ONE more try. My suggestion: have both Cheech and Rob's wives kick them out of the house and move Cheech and Rob in together. Odd couple/Chico and the Man reboot.
