Somehow, this track JUST missed my "best of 2011" list yet I think we can all agree it's quite possibly the worst music video of 2011.

Here's my pick:

Did you somehow forget this gem, or was that just too easy of a target?

A 13 year-old girl who made a video with friends on a lark hardly compares with industry professionals who have been in the business for over a decade and who really should have known better.

That being said and in spite of Turbulence being pretty unwatchable, Steve Aoki is a really talented guy.

Anyway, here's my pick (basically stolen from Yahoo's list (music.yahoo.com), but I'm inclined to agree with their No. 1 pick here):

I thought this kind of music and video died out sometime in the late 1980s. Just awful.

According to Wikipedia, the Black video was produced by an actual production company and her mom paid $4,000 for them to make the video, so I'd say it was done on a little more than a "lark."

Yeah, there's was a black guy who suddenly starts rapping 2/3 of the way through the video. That was one of the most bizarre parts, and indicative of more effort than "a video with friends".

//edit: As interesting as the typo was, the image of a black dude randomly { Sorry, you must be logged in to see this text! } the cast of the Friday video is not something I need to leave out there for the accidental google hits.

Oh HELL no!

This video is excellent. The band is playing in a castle while inter-cut with scenes of them in SCA (sca.org) costumes and amateur internet porn chicks pretending to fight. A song that could possibly be written by someone in Jr High School while playing Skyrim. This video is fantastic!

That intro reminds me of Manowar's Warriors Prayer (except Warrior's Prayer was fucking awesome! and this is less awesome...)

Semantics of the use of the word "lark" aside ($4k is still a fraction of the production costs involved of most videos of that ilk), let me be clear that I am certainly not defending either the production or musical aesthetics of Friday.

But I still fail to see how it warrants "most embarrassing video" when it's really nothing worse than the videos/music Ke$ha et al put out on a regular basis - nor does it come close to the historical embarrassments of Billy Squier's Rock Me Tonight (youtube.com) or Journey's Separate Ways (youtube.com) - both of which were produced by people who should have really known better. Frankly, I got plenty of enjoyment out of both the Fallon/Colbert/Roots and Richard Cheese renditions of Friday (as well as a number of other parodies), so in that vain the whole thing was highly entertaining.

I just think the non-stop hating on a teenager for doing something that was basically a vanity project - even though it wasn't all that successful in the way she intended - is getting a little old.

Trust me, I'm just as surprised as everyone else that I'm defending Rebecca Black's Friday.

In my defense, I still have managed to live this long without watching the "Friday" video from beginning to end. That said, I didn't think it qualified as I really didn't consider it a mainstream release, even though it ended up there by all the negative attention it received.

It's like how I pass over everything LMFAO is involved with because I'm pretty sure they're in on how bad they are. I don't get that sense of irony from Aoki, Luke & Jon. (Well, maybe Jon.)

All that said...

That can't be right.
