| #1 Posted on 7.12.11 1504.53 Reposted on: 7.12.18 1506.47 | I had some mixed feelings about this announcement. My first being that Marvel's solution to comic event fatigue is evidently to go with EVEN BIGGER EVENTS! I mean, this monster is going to be 12 ISSUES LONG! And it's been long-proven that comic companies don't have the attention span to stick with a 12-issue story (even if it IS bi-weekly), because time in comics is always marching on.
My other feeling is that this should be AWESOME! If done right, this could be the event that Civil War should have been. So without dawdling any further, here's the big announcement.
Marvel Announces Avengers vs. X-Men
Well, Marvel said the reveal for the "It's Coming" teaser would be coming on Wednesday, but it looks like we don't have to wait that long after all.
Marvel announced through USA Today that the teaser refers to their 2012 event series, titled simply, Avengers vs. X-Men. The series will involve the writers that Marvel has deemed their "architects" -- Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman.
The premise is that the Phoenix Force is coming back to Earth, looking for a mutant host. The X-Men are awaiting its return, but the Avengers are aware of the universe-destroying potential of the Phoenix Force, so they're looking to squash the threat before it arrives. It's perfectly logical as a plot and makes plenty of sense, so this already wins in the sense that it doesn't feel like a thrown-together plot.
My instinct here is to bring out my inner cynic, but...nostalgia and my inner child are taking over! This should be amazing! The sheer number of writers gives me the same vibe that I got when 52 was first released for DC. It's five major minds that'll tie the story cohesively together. I am very much looking forward to this event and it's already on my pull list ready to go!
Makes me wonder what'll happen in X-Sanction, which is still coming in the near future.

Wait, the X-Men are NOT "aware of the universe-destroying potential of the Phoenix Force?" They know about it more than anyone. Why wouldn't they seek to drive it away from earth? That thing is a moody Galactus. | odessasteps

I feel like there's ample chance for Wolverine to quip "You just got X'd in the A!"*
I presume Wolverine will be an X-Man and not an Avenger in this story, but I'm not up to date on which team(s) he's on.
Also, I am definitely reading this.

Judging by the promo poster, Wolverine is fighting Emma Frost and Beast is jumping up towards Storm. I would assume this is either a screw-up or Beast and Wolverine are both for the Avengers. Beast will probably switch teams during the series like Spidey did in Civil War.

Storm is currently an Avenger, so I think showing that particular matchup is meant to be ambiguous. | lotjx

That could explain why the X-Men wouldn't stop it even though they above everyone know how terrible it is. I guess Hope is going to play a giant part in this, so it won't shock me to see Jean Grey finally back from the dead. And good on Marvel for not bringing her back a few years ago.
I do think with the amount of X-Men that are Avengers, its going to lead to some problems. Also, what happened to the X-Men Civil War between Wolvie and Scott is that tying into this? I just hope they don't decide to do something retarded like kill Cap or Spidey during this. | dMp

The mutant teams just split up (in Schism) and Wolverine took half of the X-men with him to the old Xavier school. It seems he's not as militant as Cyclops (!!) I read the other day that Storm has joined (or will join) the Avengers. I'm going to assume that Wolverine's team is going to be caught in the middle and thus has to fight everyone and/or change allegiance a few times.
As a story this could be good. As a consumer I do not look forward to the potential wallet draining. | DrewDewce

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the press for this. Both teams are such a mess these days (for my tastes) that a re-boot would be about the only thing to get me interested in either of them again. (and that's no guarantee)
Of course Ed McGuinness' art is a NOTABLE exception (again, for my tastes) and I will be getting the Cable vs. the Avengers or whatever the f it's called simply for his artwork. There's some speculation that this mini will lead into that Avengers v. X-Men mini, but again unless EMc is on artwork I'll likely pass and see if it does lead to a promising reboot or not. | Scottyflamingo
