The Kerry Collins signing (already a prudent investment) is looking like an even better idea now...

John Michael Vincent of ESPN 1070 AM, Indianapolis, is reporting that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will require a second procedure on his neck and will be out indefinitely.

If true, it will mark the first time that Manning has ever missed a start (or even a snap, if I recall correctly) in the regular season due to injury. And God knows when we'll get him back.

I'm grateful that we don't enter the regular season with Curtis Painter as our starting quarterback, but obviously Collins (though a steady hand at QB) isn't Peyton. This'll sure be an interesting season.

And it makes me think that the Colts need to start looking for suitable successors for Peyton for when his career is over, through the draft and free agency. (But probably the draft). Actually I've thought that for a few years now.

I hate Curtis Painter as much as the next guy, but Collins is going to get destroyed with his methodical style and that weak O-line. This is not going to end well.

If ever there was a year for Houston to finally break through, it would be this one, but it looks more like this is Tennessee's year.

Well, he's definitely missed lots of snaps before. Remember those late-season Sorgi/Painter specials where Manning plays the first quarter to keep his consecutive starts streak alive, and then turns it over to the backup?

Also, if Manning's streak is really over, then suddenly Brett Favre's record becomes one of the most unbreakable in sports.

Big Bad, I said "due to injury", which is true. Although I could go the rest of my life without remembering the late-season Sorgi and Painter specials. (Particularly the Curtis Painter Experience that cost us the undefeated season). And I believe Kelly Holcomb got some quality snaps before that.

Same thing Angle, Rhino, and Cena had?

Could it be we've seen the end of the Manning Face?

Somewhere, Johnny U and the rest of the Colt greats are looking down with a big grin on his face.

Seriously though, Indy is pretty much screwed. Collins in not their QB of the future. He isn't even their QB of today. I am really surprised they didn't call up Sorgi as he really isn't doing anything right now and pretty much knows the system.

So do the Colts now give the Bengals a call about a certain quarterback that isn't doing anything at the moment?

I think management in Cincy is so stubborn that it likely won't happen even though they could hold Indy up for a deal.

As a Titans fan, it's somewhat scary to think that, if the Colts' season goes totally down the drain (2-14, 3-13, 4-12), they could be in a position to draft Andrew Luck next April to sit behind #18 for a season or two.

True; we could get as lucky as the San Antonio Spurs of 15 years or so back-- a usual contender that has one really bad season due to injury and gets the first overall draft pick, drafting their new face of the franchise.

Also, as someone who was born in Indianapolis, where the Colts have been since I was two years old... and on behalf of all Indianapolis fans, fuck Johnny Unitas and the rest of the Baltimore Colt greats.

As stated above, I just realized today that at least a tiny bit of Brett Favre must be really happy, since his consecutive streak record is safe now. And perhaps it is safe forever.
