| #2 Posted on 20.7.02 1054.47 Reposted on: 20.7.09 1059.03 | There were a bunch of greate quotes in the CNN.com writeup of it.
"You could possibly expel a member that could get a new trial, and makes you look like a bunch of fools," he said. "If I am to be expelled under these circumstances, then God save the republic and God save the Constitution."
"If you expel me, I will go down in history as an expelled member -- but you know what? I have a very clear conscience. I am proud to be an American," he said.
There was another great one somewhere in which he compared himself to "Maximus Meridus Decimius" or some other mispronunciation of Russel Crowe's character in Gladiator, but I can't find that one at the moment.

Yeah, he said he'd pick up his sword like Maximus after busting out of jail (he'd smuggle in a file, shovel, explosives, etc.). He had some great lines at these hearings, especially about needing a colonoscopy afterwards. | El Weasel

Seriously though, other members of congress have done just as bad(if not worse) and not gotten kicked out. In a related story there was only one member of the House to vote against expulsion....

Nope. There is precedent. Matthew Lyon was re-elected from prison in 1800 after being jailed in violation of the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798(think of what's going on now, replace "terrorists" with "France" and you get the idea).
And yes, he'll probably be re-elected in November. His district loves him because he is one of them and has brought home a lot of the bacon to his NE Ohio district. | Scott Summets

Nope. That's double jeopardy.
Btw, the Socialist Candidate for President in 1920(right after WWI, not II) was Eugene Debs, who ran five times including his run from prison. His crime was opposing the war. See a theme?
