Just to make John happy. :-) Actually, this is a pretty big story that deserves its own thread, anyway.

I know they won't necessarily follow through on it if the show isn't a hit, but you'd think instead of doing that for a show that doesn't even have a script yet, they'd make that kind of commitment to a show that's a proven hit, has a rabid fan base that would share in that commitment the way Lost fans did, and doesn't need the author to write a new book from scratch just to do season two. A show like oh, I dunno... Game of Thrones? I'm supposing it's the fact that Tom Hanks is producing.

Don't get me wrong, it'll be a cool series, it just seems like weird decision making.

The original story as reported by The Hollywood Reporter... (hollywoodreporter.com)

Which was followed up by this tweet by Neil Gaiman (twitter.com)

Yikes. Where did all of this come from? To CxMorgado’s point, I’d have thought GoT’s budget was significantly higher than what’s being reported here for AG, thus making it easier to commit six seasons for AG. But THR (hollywoodreporter.com) reported that GoT’s budget for the 1st season was $50-60 million. Not a small difference, but not as big as I thought. Either way, this is a pretty big commitment.

And then, there’s the source material. Who even thought a second book (let alone *more* than two) was being thought about? I’m definitely thrilled that the first book is being adapted to TV. But I’m also scared about what happens after that. GRRM has a lot more of a head start as far as writing is concerned.

Let the fantasy casting begin.

The slightly smaller budget probably owes to the modern setting rather than the medieval/fantasy setting of Game of Thrones and a much smaller cast.

$3-4 Million per episode doesn't really seem like much for an hour-long show though, once you take into account cast salaries. Given that the last show Tom Hanks did on HBO was the much loved Big Love (not to mention The Pacific and Band of Brothers) I'd say that his relationship with HBO is such that anything he brings to them is pretty much a go from word one.

I know that anything Playtone produces is guaranteed to be a quality project, so I'm on board. It also doesn't hurt that the first American Gods book takes place in recognizable places around where I grew up. :)

Gaiman's Anansi Boys is set in the same universe, so I'm sure that could get pulled in for a season if needed.

I wish this was 5 years ago, when I had HBO and more passion for Gaiman's work. That said, I'm sure when this comes to pass I'll figure out a way to follow it religiously.
