Man, Fridays have been bad this month.
Gil had one of the morning matinee slots at Coachella '99 on one of the smaller stages. At the time I had absolutely no idea how fortunate I was to have caught him and to have heard "There's a War Going On," which I STILL don't think has ever made it onto an album.
He always bristled if you called him a progenitor of rap music, but there was no denying he could lay down a great rap.
He loved jazz and he loved cocaine; I wish he'd loved one more and one less - but don't know if either was possible.
