This is around the top of the list of "Things I didn't think I'd see today."

Seth MacFarlane Rebooting The Flintstones

Deadline, is reporting that animation overlord Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, American Dad), after many years of negotiations between 20th Century Fox TV and Warner Bros Television, is rebooting The Flintstones as a TV and film property. A dream-come-true, reportedly, for MacFarlane, a mega-saurus Flintstones fan.

There was some concern from the Flintstone rights-holders regarding MacFarlane's raunchy tone and how the new Flintstones would be treated, but it seems like everything got smoothed out in the end. This new series is still years off from airing, but when it does hit TV it will be on FOX.

He has gone to the Flintstones well quite often during Family Guy, so I guess this shouldn't TOTALLY surprise me. And hey, MacFarlane does a great Fred. But can he make a SERIES out of this? Some of those Flintstones gags were actually pretty bad ("I got an e-ROCK-tion!"), so I'm not expecting much quality to come out of this.

Man, I really hate Seth McFarlane and his douchey, let's-be-offensive-just-to-be-offensive style of "comedy". And I'm no prude, mind you, but he just really comes across to me as the type that laughs at old people slipping on the ice and breaking their hips. I really don't trust him with something family-friendly like the Flintstones.

I one of those people that will laugh at old people falling down, but I hate everything Seth McFarlane does.

He will ruin the Flintstones.

i read this other places as well. Just seems odd to read. Even weirder that I didn't know is MacFarlane has history with Hanna-Barbera. Due to working at a Animator and Writer for them. He was also a writer for Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexter's Laboratory

Fred made a great appearance on Harvey Birdman, as well as an episode of Grim Adv. of Billy and Mandy.

He's flexed his acting muscles a couple of times in the last few years, time to brush off the old polka-dotted tunic.

I'm with you - I don't like Family Guy, American Dad or whatever he puts together. If the Flintstones takes on the same style as those shows, then I think I'll be sick.

For fuck's sake, did Fox really have to give him a fourth cartoon?

At this point, I bet he's begging for The Simpsons to come to an end so he can call it "Seth MacFarlane Presents Seth MacFarlane's 'Animation Domination: A Seth MacFarlane Joint'."

At one time, I was a huge, HUGE fan of Seth MacFarlane and Family Guy. I don't say it much around here, but I've become more and more disappointed with his shows over the years. I stopped watching Cleveland altogether, and I find myself liking FG less and less. I still think American Dad is one of the funnniest shows on TV, though.

But, ss someone who followed his career closely, I can say I have no worries at all with his taking control of The Flintstones. Seth is a huge retro buff and has very high reverence for the pop culture of his youth. Early Family Guy was his homage to shows like The Flintstones, The Honeymooners and All In The Family.

I don't know if anyone was begging for a reboot of The Flintstones, but IF it had to be done, then I can't think of anyone more appropriate to do it. I wouldn't worry at all about the over-the-top, raunchy humor of his current shows being part of this.

(If I'm wrong and he desecrates this franchise in 2013, I will be the first one to dig this post up and eat crow).

Agreed. For me, it's not "Can he reboot the Flintstones in a proper way?", it's "Do he have the energy and material to do yet another show?". Pretty much everyone agrees at this point that FG is getting weak at a lot of its plots and jokes. 'The Cleveland Show' under any other name would have been cancelled by now. And AD is still great, but it's already been on for 6 seasons and I just can't see lasting that much longer on this high a level.

Seth seems so intent to have his name on as many shows as possible, he forgot about keeping the quality of these shows up. If he doesn't rein it in and (among other things) abandon the Flintstones project, he'll lose more fans and viewers that he worked so hard to build over at least the last 12 years.

If he brings the raunchy "Family Guy" style to The Flintstones, WE RIOT.

He needs to be true to the series' original formula.

I think he'll stay true to his word and stay true to the show's original spirit because at this point he probably feels the need to show he has more gears than he's given credit for.

Whether he can succeed at doing that, and whether there's demand for it even if he succeeds, that's another question entirely.

Considering when Flintsones aired it was the first network cartoon run at night, I expect him to give it a little more pop. Still, I have no idea if he can pull this off or why he even did it unless it was going to be sold to someone else.
The problem with the Flintsones formula is that it really doesn't work in today's world if he tries to throw it on at night. If its a Saturday morning thing then it should be fine.

I'm not so much anti-MacFarlane as I am, apathetic to a Flintstones reboot in general. I'm not one of those "you're pissing on my childhood" types (I enjoyed the Jayden Smith presents Karate Kid learns Kung Fu) but for the most part, reboots seem lazy to me. It seems it would be easier to take those ideas you have and put a new name on it. Then again, as someone mentioned, some projects would get greenlit or would be canceled if they went by another name.

Anyway, I remember reading that Flintstones' first season was more mature than standard Saturday morning shows and began it's life in primetime.

Family-friendly?

Did you ever see the Winston cigarette commercial with Fred lighting up a smoke that would air during the show in the sixties?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFogTD0t5kM

Such different times.

I've always thought how boring The Flintstones was for children. I watched it because it was a cartoon, but the whole show was about dealing with your boss, forgetting your wife's anniversary, going bowling with your friend. There was not much for kids to relate to until Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm came along.

Besides, all the original voice actors are gone, and even hearing a different Fred in the Pebbles commercials feels wrong.

I don't think Seth will screw it up and make it offensive, but I just don't know what else they can do with the characters that we haven't seen before.

Probably not family-friendly for its time, but compared to today, where 8-11 PM is all dirty cartoons or cop shows about rape, abduction, or murder, it seems pretty tame. Probably more a reason, as others have stated, not to reboot it at all. Such a dearth of actual creativity in Hollywood now.
