We just traded away our LOCKED IN choice of catcher through 2005 to the Mariners for...
...ANOTHER SHORT STOP.

Chris Gomez

D'Angelo Jiminez.
Now, we have another rookie prospect. Nevermind that four of the above 6 were rookies...

Well, Damian Jackson's range is poor, and he's really not a good solution at second base. He'll be a career utilityman, but the fact is he probably shouldn't start.
Ben Davis, from all accounts, is a real asshole that needs to grow up, and with the passable Wiki Gonzalez around (and the ability to get hurt-nothing veterans like Tom Lampkin and Brad Ausmus and whomever else for the next few years), a guy with an attitude problem that could very well screw up a developing team's chemistry is not a great fit. Plus, he hit poorly after a good start, and by now he should have been blossoming.
The trade makes sense if D'Angelo Jimenez can play second base instead of Jackson, because Jimenez will be a much better hitter, and Ramon Vazquez is probably going to be a stud. If it gives them the infield it COULD be, then they won't miss a catcher that will be every bit as good as say, Javier Lopez.
And Alex Arias and Chris Gomez were always busts and just kind of rambled into San Diego one day, so they shouldn't even count. Their set infield of the future looks pretty awesome right now.

Mendez is probably the smoothest defensive short stop I've seen play here in San Diego. Offensively, he makes Mendoza look good. Granted, he went from A ball to the bigs, and he is really young... but with all of this talent at short now I don't see where he will come in to play in the near future (if he ever makes the Pads again).
Sometimes I wonder if we don't make moves at the major league level just to get better in Triple A - the Stars were usually pretty good and I think Portland had a decent season last year.
Kory DeHaan, Mendez, Perez, and that Pitcher we stole from the Dodgers (lefty, really good, can't remember his name - was rule 5 from the Mets to the Dodgers and we took him when they cut him for that old bastard to take his roster spot)... Rule 5 can be a good thing, but it seems like its only making our Triple A teams better, I don't see the production at the majors level. Maybe I'm being impatient - it's just that seeing those roster spots go to kids makes me lose hope on opening day that it can be anything but a rebuilding year...
I wonder what stiffs prospects we will carry this year at Henderson's expense.

Reposted on: 17.12.08 1124.21 | The best thing I've ever seen done with a Rule 5 draft is when the Cubs got Scott Chassion from the A's, liked him, not enough (or maybe a lot) to keep him on the roster all season, so they worked out a deal with Oakland to keep him AND get Miguel Cario.
Chassion's now the Closer of the Future (though that's typically not a good thing) and Cario helped out a bit. I think we trade them the Heinske kid who got traded to Toronto last week, so it worked for everyone.
I think Rodney Myers (not the closer) was one of those Rule 5 guys up all season a few years ago, and although he finnaly got to major leagues, he wasn't great enough that it was worth the trouble. The only time it is worth the trouble is if you know you're not contending, I guess. | SC

They project Mendez to be their future shortstop, and hope to have Jimenez at second base. Now I don't see the point in acquiring Vazquez. I guess Ben Davis must have been a real sumbitch.
But, if they can trade Vazquez for some bullpen help, that'd probably work out. Unless, unless who knows. I don't know what this is all about now. Maybe they're filling up with "of the future" to see which one is the best.

Did you get a chance to watch any of the games that he started last year?
The guy is smooth smooth smooth on the field... like one of those old CBS records classical recordings on vinyl...
AND he has no stick. The kid was never above A ball until last year, and he's only 22 or 23.
Seriously, he made AMAZING plays at short. And he's a guaranteed out. If you could guarantee me a .225 or .230 from him, I wouldn't mind him in the lineup. He's that good defensively. Right now, he's a sub .200 hitter that looked bad at the plate.
