DENVER -- The Celtics, according to an NBA source, have traded popular workhorse center Kendrick Perkins to the Oklahoma City Thunder along with guard Nate Robinson for small forward Jeff Green and center Nenad Krstic.

The Globe first reported that Robinson would be traded while Yahoo! Sports reported the deal with the Oklahoma City. The Globe also learned the Celtics will receive the Clippers 2012 first-round pick in the deal.

Perkins, a Celtic since entering the draft out of high school, was a fan-favorite in Boston because of his tough-minded style and exponential improvement over the years. But he was a free agent this summer and the Celtics sensed issues with re-signing him for the long term. Perkins is from Texas and will get a chance to play closer to his home.

Perkins, who is expected to miss the next few games with a sore left knee, attended the team's shootaround at Pepsi Center and was joking with teammates as they entered the arena. While Perkins wanted to stay in Boston, he also wanted to be compensated like many of the league's top centers and was resigned to the fact that it might not be in Boston.

Green was fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft by Boston and was traded to the Seatte SuperSonics in the Ray Allen deal on draft night and was one of the young pieces for the Oklahoma City Thunder. But with the emergence of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder did not sign Green to a contract this past summer, making him a restricted free agent when the season ends.

He is the small forward the Celtics had been seeking and will give coach Doc Rivers many lineup options because he can also play power forward. He was averaging 15.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for Oklahoma City.

Robinson came to the Celtics during last year's trade deadline and was included in this deal because his salary matched and the return of Delonte West would take some of his minutes.

Krstic is a perimeter center and had struggled with the Thunder this season. He averaged 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in 21 minutes.

I won't lie, I'm feeling pretty bummed about this move ... As Jeff Clark put it, "Guess the undefeated starting five comment Doc made last June had no meaning all along..."

I really liked Robinson in last year's playoffs and think he can contribute far more when given more time.

I think I'd rather they kept Perkins and traded Shaq.

Very interesting. Makes me wonder if the Celts aren't 100% sold on Perkins fully bouncing back from his injury. If Perkins IS back to full strength and stays there, he might be that last piece of the puzzle for OKC. They've been missing a genuine big man presence.

It's also possible that Danny Ainge was simply afraid that Perk would get more money elsewhere as a free agent next season (wasn't there a report that he turned down the Celts' initial offer of a contract extension)?

The C's have apparently lost two of their backup big men as well ...

EDIT: Apparently, the Celts are clearing up cap space/roster space to make a move for Troy Murphy and a "mystery wing player".

I'm guessing Simmons' next podcast goes up tomorrow to do a wrap-up of the deadline deals.

Mystery Wing Player-Rasheed Wallace. God help me I loved our chances this year but we were one Kendrick Perkins performance away last year. At least Jeff Green can shoot from outside 10 feet.

That's a FANTASTIC deal(s) for OKC, but a head-scratcher for Boston. Seems like an odd time to throw in the towel and throw away able-bodied big men like that. The Thunder are officially SCARY.

That's what I was thinking, but wouldnt OKC's doctors/training staff catch that too and veto the trade?

So the Celts might be considering a return for Leon Powe (necn.com) ...

I dunno, this would strike me as a move more to appease the veterans, because truthfully (as much as I loved Leon's work ethic when he was originally on the Celts) this would just add another big man to the team whose legs don't work anymore ...

I liked Perk and I'm sad to see him go. However he's not the 2nd coming of Bill Russell, which is how a lot of the Celtic fans are acting like. Perk is a very good defender but he's a below average rebounder for a center and he gives you almost nothing on offense. The Celtics have had the best or 2nd best record in the east playing most of the season without him. Granted Shaq was healthy then, and that's the biggest risk of this trade. If you don't get at least one of the O'Neals healthy soon then there's a big void in the middle. Speaking of which (via Twitter)...

Truthfully, I'll believe it when I see it. As for the argument I've heard that Perk plays Dwight Howard good, I found this from a Celtics blogger I follow on Twitter...

In the last 12 months, Perk played Howard 9 times. Howard averaged 21.6 ppg 11.2 rpg 58.9%FG.

I wouldn't advise J coming back before the playoffs, lest he risk yet another injury.

From the Dwight Howard defensive point of view, I understand the trade. Shaq plays him better than anybody. But the Magic are such an afterthought this year that to plan for Dwight Howard seems somewhat short-sighted. I'd much rather roll the dice with Perk and keep that size advantage over Miami and Chicago.

I could see Jermaine playing a little in late March if his knee is ok. If anything just to get him in game shape for the playoff run.

As for needing a size advantage going against Chicago and Miami; C's are 3-0 against Miami and Perk didn't play in 2 of those games. C's are 2-1 against Chicago and Perk didn't play in any of those games. The 1 loss vs. the Bulls the C's were without KG in that game. If Garnett and at least one of the O'Neals are healthy for the playoffs they should be fine.

The finals pieces of this trade might be falling into place ...

Murphy and the Warriors have already reached a buyout agreement, according the San Jose Mercury News. The negotiation requires Murphy to sign with an Eastern Conference team, and he has reportedly narrowed his potential destinations to the Heat or Celtics.

Both of those teams also are interested in Bibby, who has been in discussions with the Wizards for a buyout agreement of his own, according to The Washington Post. The point guard is on the books for $6.4 million next season, which could complicate a potential deal, but the Blazers, Heat and Celtics all will vie for his services should he be waived.

It'll be interesting to see Bibby in a Celtics uniform, what with his past involvement in those Atlanta playoff series and the bad blood found therein ...

And before even playing a game with the Thunder, Perkins has signed an extension with the team: He'll be under contract through 2014-15, making $36 million.
