I had to give this two episodes to feel it out.

It very much feels like Chicago. I'm not sure if it might be so over the top that it annoys everyone outside of Chicago, but it feels authentic. (Except for an alderman wielding so much power and the mayor being invisible, of course.)

It also kind of feels, uh, terrible? I really thought it was going to be police chief who'd be the problem, but it's clearly the lead detective who is the unbearable superman. The perfect cop who's always right and if it ever might seem he's wrong, that's because he's actually right and you don't know it. House has done pretty OK with a heel for the lead, but there always seemed to be charm and wit and flaws there - this is a wonderful man with other characters noting how awesome he is whenever they have a chance. I'm glad everyone inside the show is interested in this character, they won't miss me out here much that way.

The scene where they actually lost me is where the mother, who had credited the police chief with saving her son from a life of ruin at least twice over many years, decides she now hates the police chief after one conversation with the alderman. Pretty sure I can find better melodrama on SoapNet, but I do thank you for getting "1:20" right last week.

I think this falls into the Fox category of "It sounds like a great idea for a movie or a mini-series, but doesn't have any legs past season 1 or the first three episodes." You can go through the list of canceled shows of Fox and I am sure they sound good as a one shot thing, but not something that will last 5 seasons.

I haven't gotten around to watching the newest episode yet, but I couldn't agree more with this assessment. I also found the dialogue to be too cute and smart by half; the kind of conversations where it just seems like everyone is waiting for their "spots", and while they wait they all have smarmy grins.

This is what lost me too. I'm not capable of that level of suspension of belief. There had to be a better way of getting the chief into some sort of situation where she needs the alderman's help because that is where they are obviously headed. Even though I thought the second episode was better than the first, I can't fight through the whole mother turning on the chief plotline. It's not like it would be that hard to come up with a scenario where the police chief needs to ask for a favor from the corrupt alderman who runs the city.
