Keith Olbermann said tonight is his last show at the end of the show tonight.

since he said he "was informed this was his last show" does that mean he was fired?

As far as I am concerned, it is a non issue. I never saw his show, other than clips shown on other shows. It's my understanding few other people saw it either.

did the Pier Morgan show's initial success finally push universal over the edge or is this Comcast's first shot across the bow?

Here's the story link:

Final Countdown: Keith Olbermann And MSNBC Announce They Are Parting Ways (VIDEO)

Keith Olbermann and MSNBC have ended their contract, according to a statement from MSNBC. The last episode of "Countdown" aired this evening.

    MSNBC's statement reads as follows:

MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

As for the updated schedule, Lawrence O'Donnell's show will be moved to 8 p.m.; while "The Ed Show" with Ed Schultz will air at 10 p.m. Rachel Maddow will stay in her regular slot at 9 p.m.

Now to balance things out, can Glenn Beck go back home to Mars?

EDIT: TMZ's saying it's a Comcast power play

Sources connected with the network tell us ... Comcast honchos did not like Keith's defiance and the way he played in the sandbox.

Our sources say Keith has around two years left on his contract, and he'll be paid his salary -- around $7 million a year.

Highest rated on MSNBC and beat Fox News in 18-49 demo on many occasions, slaughtered CNN competition. Plus Piers is against Maddow, not Keith.

I'm not surprised by this one bit. He always came across as a bit of a doofus who was trying way too hard to be funny and almost always failing. Plus; the whole "partison hack" thing wasn't helping his reputation. The only segment really worth watching was the "Worst Person In The World" and even then; just to find out what stupid thing Beck or Limbaugh sai (and really; you can find that out on Media Matters anyway).

Comcast is cleaning house. Look for a total overhall (and possible name change) of MSNBC. I wouldn't be shocked if it becomes a conservative-leaning network to try and compete with Fox News.

If I were Rachel Maddow I'd start working on my resume.

The highest rated show on the second-lowest rated cable news network behind CNN.

And they still let him go for being too difficult. That tells me he was way more trouble than he was worth to them.

well, I was looking at this chart (admittedly from a year ago, but is seems like things haven't changed.

Seems like he was briefly competitive in 2008. I also saw a story where Nancy Grace was now beating his show on Headline news. You gotta be desperate to watch that.

He's still useful and has a place, I just don't know where that place is anymore.

My main problem with MSNBC is that they don't fill in the other hours with actual news just jailhouse documentaries.

CNN might pick him up if they're desperate, but I wouldn't count on it. He's still on retainer for another 2 years anyway.

CNN has their own problems with Parker/Spitz being at each others throats since day one. The 18-49 demographic is the only that matters to advertisers, but in politics its the 50 to older that really matters. Comcast has pissed so many people off in the past, I am not sure how they are making money considering I am in near the heart of Comcast country and there are dishes everywhere even on the apartment buildings. Comcast buying NBC seems like a stretch to me and it won't shock me if this turns into an AOL/Time Warner deal.

I liked Keith and if they get rid of one of the few liberal news organizations it will be disappointing. MSNBC being liberal is really misleading, because Cup of Joe which takes up almost their entire morning is not even close to being liberal more like a trainwreck headed by a man whose ego is out of control due to minor success in Congress. I am not sure who they are going to get to replace him. Nancy Grace is a complete fraud. CNN has plastered Pier Morgan's face all over the place that at one point, I couldn't get into the main body of their website without a giant pop-ad in my face.

I think I'd much rather watch documentaries featuring the Booty Warrior than anything else on MSNBC (or CNN or Fox News, for that matter).

None of the cable "news" networks are really much about news anyway. It's almost all opinion-based shows, and "news" spun to fit their agenda.

I didn't really follow Olbermann on MSNBC, but I'll be crushed if he's no longer the voice of NBC's coverage of the Kona Ironman Triathlon every year. He brings the perfect gravitas to the coverage.

I think we can safely call the Ax & the Smasher, you're officially Crush-ed.

From what I've been seeing on the news coverage about this I keep hearing MSNBC is #2 cable news network and Keith was #2 in his timeslot.

excuse me? I don't understand this statement. a million people watched Olbermann, which seemingly includes places that just have MSNBC on, like airport monitors. 2 Million watch Fox at that time. Basically, no one watches CNN.

Maybe your news sources suck, if they say MSNBC was competitive. They are competitive with CNN for last place. (I wonder how they did against Bloomberg?)

Just a sample - from the 18th, when we had no idea Keith was going:
Same Day Cable News Daily Ratings for January 18, 2011
Ave Day times 1000 25-54 35-64
FNC 1,173 281 550
CNN 397 124 181
MSNBC 487 111 231
CNBC 223 57 111
HLN 274 127 158

Total day audience MSNBC is second to Fox, about 40% of their audience, and about 1/4 are the younger Skew. Fox had more younger viewers, but a much lower percentage. The data from TVbythenumbers.zap2it.com does not include the youngest or oldest Demos. Looks like HLN has the largest percentage of younger viewers

at O'Reilly/Olbermann Time the numbers shift
Net P2+ (000s) 25-54 (000s) 35-64 (000s)
FNC 2,978 681 1,355
CNN 469 72 171
MSNBC 1,055 260 489
CNBC 213 82 92
HLN 720 231 375

Lot more people watching. Olberman's percent compared to O'Reilly goes to about 33%, but his younger to older ratio stays about the same. Parker Spitzer on CNN does about the same as their overall average. Looks like O'Reilly's younger to older ration stays about the same too.

What I found kind of interesting is that HLN averages about half of MSNBC all day, but goes up to 3/4 of their audience during Nancy Grace up against Keith.

What about this week, before SOTU?

The total numbers are the same, but at 8
Net 8PM P2+ (000s) 25-54 (000s) 35-64 (000s)
FNC 3,485 815 1,681
CNN 483 150 240
MSNBC 1,533 332 651
CNBC 198 86 109
HLN 703 240 357

Looks like a big night for cable news -all the numbers up, it seems, but about the same percentages. Not too many younger viewers with O'Donnell, but this may be a skewed night.

Oh no...

Ever since last Keith Olbermann’s sudden departure from MSNBC a week ago last Friday, both television insiders and loyal fans wondered when we could expect to see him back on “the tube.” Well we may have received our answer tonight on The Late Show with David Letterman in a funny gag that employed one of the most underused comedic devices: the element of surprise. Update below.

After Letterman spoke about the uprising in Egypt, he then threatened the audience “If anyone acts up, we’ve got a guy,” Jump cut to the self-aware and comically angry Olbermann looking over the shoulder of Biff Henderson.

One can only guess whether this brief appearance violates his exit clause, but the fact that he'd push his luck like this is so incredibly stupid...and yet so incredibly Olbermann.

I'm pretty sure that was old tape from a previous appearance, kinda like when Letterman would use and reuse and reuse his footage of Tom Hanks in the green room (if anybody actually remembers that - I should say "if anybody is still watching Letterman" ;-) )
