These are the latest series that MTV is running into the ground:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_and_Pregnant

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_Mom

These shows are total trainwreck TV, which is probably why I can't help but watch if I happen to see them on.

They're not as interesting as True Life (which can be pretty educational and enlightening) or even MADE, but man; it's amazing how girls who are in some cases pretty smart can really screw up their lives. Some of these "mothers" act like 6 year olds themselves.

Of course; being "reality" TV I know they edit things together to present things the way they want us to see them.

To MTV's credit; they run bumpers about how teens can prevent pregnancy (uh; like not having sex in the first place?) and at least they aren't portraying being a teen mom as easy, or cool, or fun.

Part of me wants to feel bad for the teens, but part of me also feels like they have nobody to blame but themselves for their situation.

I just had my first child at age 38. I'm married. I have a job.

I can't imagine raising a baby with a TV crew following us, and I can't imagine doing this when I was 16.

I'm sure the couples are being paid to do the show- that probably helps.

I think putting these girls on the cover of People and Us Weekly is a horrible idea. They don't need to be made into celebrities and neither do their kids who get no choice in the matter.

Which implies a financial benefit to teen pregnancy, and that has a stink to it.

I see covers like this and wonder about the cycle of fame and misery and then fame based on misery.

My wife and I watched the entire last season of Teen Mom, and she's seen probably most of the episodes of both Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant.

She/we watch because it's total trainwreck TV. I absolutely LOATHE some of the people on the show. For the most part their lives are horrible messes. I could just leave it at that and not get emotionally invested if not for the fact that innocent children are involved. Some of the mothers should get (and at least one has gotten) their kids taken away from them.

Ah yes; Amber. She was/is a complete nutcase. I felt so bad for Gary.

What you can't see behind the rail: she's being paid approximately $250,000 to do the show. I'm guessing the contract didn't have any incentives for baby daddy-punching.

This crap, which my wife loves is about as "real" as a Jerry Springer episode.

Is it a coincidence that every one if these people speak as if they are reading from a piece if paper? And most of the time they have the reading skills of a fifth grader which makes it even more intolerable.

Another piece of shit show on what was one a relevant and somewhat respected television station.

Well; they all seem to be fairly under-educated... which helps explain why they're in this situation to begin with.

Obviously the narration parts are scripted and being read from paper, yes.

As are the scenes where they are "talking" about something important. Totally scripted and scripted badly.

I watched about 3 minutes of a show yesterday before I asked my wife to change the channel. Teen Mom 2 was living in the basement and had a totally spontaneous conversation with her friend about her and her baby daddy breaking up, and how traumatic it was. So traumatic apparently that she wouldn't have called her "best friend" after it happened to talk about it.

Such a crap show, which makes the consequences of sex seem less important. Slapping a "the more you know" announcement at regular intervals doesn't really fix the problem.
