TONIGHT: Miz barely escaped TLC last night still champion…what’s next for him? Plus, with Wade Barrett’s decisive loss to John Cena, have we seen the last of Nexus?
-Cold open to the arena, where Justin Roberts introduced the reigning WWE Champion, The Miz. CM Punk and Jerry Lawler were shown at ringside; no sign (or word) of Michael Cole. Miz was out solo, with no Alex Riley. He reiterated that he was STILL WWE Champion. He said the fans were expecting something else, like a NEW WWE Champion in Randy Orton. He said he beat Randy Orton and put him through a table. Then some strange wailing came from the TitanTron. Out walked Alex Riley in chains and a robe, saying he was the ghost of Christmas past. He wanted to show Miz the error of his ways before it’s too late. He showed Miz his first WWE Title defense, when he beat Jerry Lawler in a TLC match three weeks ago. By the end of the video, Riley was in the ring, standing behind Miz. Miz said beating a WWE Hall-of-Famer wasn’t a regrettable decision, and in fact, he does not regret anything he’s ever done. Then more howling and Michael Cole walked out in chains and a top hat. He’s the ghost of Christmas present. He even gave his catchphrase, “and I quote.” He said Miz’s actions last night were, although vintage, extremely unacceptable. “Greatest beginning to a Raw I’ve ever seen,” said Punk. Cole said Miz should be ashamed for retaining through nefarious means last night. Miz said he was wrong again, as actions of a champ are defined by one sentence: Are you still champion after the match? Yes, he is. He said Orton underestimated him, and he beat him. He held up the belt, saying it was an image to put on Orton’s Christmas card. One last miser, I suppose. Oh, it’s a picture of the Miz girl, with someone doing the voice and that hokey mouth thing. She’s the ghost of Christmas future, and she’s angry. She said Miz needs to change his ways or John Morrison will beat him. They are really milking that image. Miz said he IS the future and Charles Dickens couldn’t write a better story. He did his catchphrase, but John Morrison finally interrupted.
Morrison called that segment stupid, even for Miz. He said he’s happy for Miz’s success, because last night, he beat Sheamus to become the #1 Contender. Morrison said sometime soon, he and Miz would fight for the title. He said he beat Miz in the past, and present, and he knows he can beat him in the future. Really, asked Miz? Miz said he has always been better than Morrison. Riley stepped in front of Miz and shoved Morrison, then the two men started brawling. Sheamus came out and Cole joined the commentary team. Sheamus clubbed Morrison down, then Lawler punched Riley. Punk admonished him and asked for some decorum. The GM chimed in and ordered a six-man tag match: Miz, Riley and Sheamus vs. Morrison, Lawler and Orton. Miz was on the stage at the time of the announcement, and Orton came out to nail Miz from behind. No music to play him off. Odd placement of that attacl.
-Last night, John Cena beat Wade Barrett in a Chairs match. Cena addressed the WWE Universe live tonight.
-Cole plugged the Tribute to the Troops special, airing Wednesday on USA Network.
-The announcers talked on-camera about the six-man tag match that was just made. Joining them at ringside was Natalya, the WWE Divas Champion.
(1) Melina vs. Alicia Fox vs. Eve Torres- Triple-Threat Match To Determine #1 Contender for Divas Championship Fox went after Torres at the bell, and fought off Melina to continue the punishment. She tossed Eve out of the ring and concentrated on Melina. They got too close to the ropes on a whip into those ropes, and appeared to have to improvise. The ladies traded roll-ups and Fox regained control afterward. Powerbomb by Fox after Melina tried a headscissors. Kick to the chest by Eve, then a clothesline. Standing moonsault for two. Torres set Fox up for a move, but Melina interrupted. Eve went to the top anyway, but Melina met her up there. I don’t like where this is going as Fox got to her feet. She put Melina on her shoulders and Eve went for a cross-body, but Melina turned it into a victory roll and she pinned Fox after Eve missed the splash.
Winner: Melina, at 2:55. Felt like the blind leading the blind in this one.
Natalya went into the ring to congratulate Melina, but Melina slapped her. It took Nattie by surprise, and Melina simply left the ring and walked to the back.
-The Bellas were backstage, arguing about who had the bigger connection with Daniel Bryan. Bryan then walked up and asked how they were doing. They grabbed Bryan on either arm and started walking to the ring with them.
-The announcers again talked on camera, this time about Nexus rumored to NOT be at Raw tonight.
(2) Daniel Bryan vs. William Regal In my world, this match gets 15:00. Good chain wrestling with a few kip-ups early on. Regal looks like he’s gained some weight. Snap mare and a kick to the back by Regal. Bryan got pissed and met him with a forearm to the face. Kicks by Bryan to Regal’s chest in the corner. Off the ropes, he was met with a forearm from the Englishman. Regal had a cravat applied, and Bryan picked Regal up and slammed him out of it, but Regal held onto it. The announcers discussed the Bellas and Daniel Bryan. Full-nelson by Regal, but Bryan fought out. The men traded European uppercuts, to the boo-yay of the crowd. Regal attempted a Regal Stretch, but he couldn’t hook it. He tried a chicken-wing suplex, but couldn’t get Bryan up. Bryan countered into a LeBell lock, and Regal tapped immediately.
Winner: Bryan, at 4:31. Really good match that looked more like a fight than pretty much anything you’ll see on Raw.
The Bellas kissed Bryan on the cheek, then the mouth, as Cole accused Bryan of trying to run away. He had a confused look on his face after they kissed him.
- The Six-man tag main event was plugged once again.
-A video package aired with John Cena asking fans to donate their Delta frequent flyer miles to help him and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
-John Morrison was taping up backstage when Randy Orton walked in. Orton complimented him on the match in dialogue straight out of a Smackdown vs. Raw video game. Orton warned Morrison that if he beat the Miz in his title match, Orton is coming after him. Morrison said he’d be ready. As for their tag match, Orton warned Morrison not to trust him.
-Backstage, Santino Marella was getting a massage via Tamina, who was walking all over his back. Maryse came in to do some trash talking and Maryse ended up standing on Santino’s back to go toe-to-toe with Tamina. They argued until Vladimir Kozlov and Ted DiBiase pulled them off.
-Mark Henry and Gail Kim were talking backstage about how nice it was to not have Nexus running wild backstage. Vickie Guerrero and Dolph Ziggler walked by and Vickie gave her “excuse me” to Henry.
(3) Santino Marella & Tamina vs. Ted DiBiase & Maryse- Mixed Tag Match Santino was walking hunched over, as if his back was injured from the backstage confrontation. Tamina offered to help Santino out with his back problems before the match, and it seemed to work. Marella threatened DiBiase with the Cobra, which was enough to give Teddy Jr. pause and Santino to take him to the mat. DiBiase fired back with a running elbow, and Marella kicked out at two. Dropkick by DiBiase and another two-count. Rear chin-lock by DiBiase. He really wrenched it, but DiBiase ended up getting to his feet. High hip-toss by Santino, then a diving headbutt. Maryse tagged in before he could apply the Cobra, and he in fact had to hold back the Cobra. DiBiase and Santino went to the floor and Tamina hit the Superfly splash for the win. Tamina put Santino on her shoulders and took him to the back afterward.
Winners: Santino & Tamina, at 2:56. Just a comedy match that doesn’t do much for DiBiase.
-John Cena was backstage, giving flowers to a stagehand. He’ll be out next.
-Punk thanked My Chemical Romance for “Na Na Na,” the official theme to the TLC PPV.
-John Cena came out to the ring. Punk called Cena, “a monster.” Cena made a joke about a guy at ringside with a “we hate Cena” t-shirt and even hugged him. He said tonight, for the first time in forever, Raw is Nexus free. He said it makes him want to dance, so he did this really nerdy dance. I mean, REALLY nerdy. Cena said he came bearing exclusive footage from the TLC PPV. It was different angles and slow-motion videos of Barrett being crushed by the chairs. He said finally, he has gotten to each and every member of Nexus. He said the winds have finally changed for Wade Barrett and his group of “turdburglars” (yes, he actually said that). He said he can finally look toward Wrestlemania. But first, Vickie Guerrero interrupted, and she walked out with Dolph Ziggler. The crowd was booing the heck out of her. Everytime she opened her mouth, the crowd gave it to her more and more. Cena was loving it. Then, a “you suck” chant. Just nuclear heat here. Vickie tried to start her promo about a half-dozen times. She said Cena was not the only one who won a match at the PPV. Another “you suck” chant.
Guerrero said Ziggler was still the IC Champ, and she had some footage to show as well. The clip was of her and Lawler sharing barbs at the Slammy Awards last week. Vickie wanted an apology for Lawler calling her fat. And if he doesn’t, Ziggler will beat him up. Lawler said Vickie is the only WWE Diva whose bathtub has stretch marks. Cena wanted to chime in, saying Vickie is so fat, she wakes up in sections. Lawler said that when God said, “let there be light,” they had to ask Vickie to step out of the way first. Cena said that when Vickie was a baby, they had to take pictures by satellite. Should the #1 babyface really be calling a normal-looking woman fat? Ziggler interrupted and said Vickie Guerrero was a saint. Vickie finally slapped Cena after one of his insults. The GM chimed in. The anonymous one made a match: Dolph Ziggler vs. John Cena, and it is right now. Between the dancing, the turdburglars comment and the insults of Vickie, this was a horrible, horrible segment for the Cena character.
(4) John Cena vs. Dolph Ziggler Ziggler took Cena to the mat. “Vickie sucks” chant from the fans. Headlock take-over from Cena. Neither man could get the advantage a minute into the match. Ziggler finally kicked away at Cena in the corner as the fans were still buzzing. Ziggler got thrown into the buckle then bulldogged by Cena for a two-count. Suplex that was generously called a fisherman’s suplex by Cole (Cena doesn’t even hold the leg all the way through anymore). He missed a charge in the corner though, and Ziggler went on the attack. Punk surmised that Cena was getting more than he bargained for here. They went to break under 6:00 in.
Cena gave Ziggler a sidewalk slam out of break, and both men stayed down. Crowd was still hot as the cougar Vickie Guerrero prowled around ringside. Jawbreaker, kind of a reverse Zig Zag, got a two-count from Ziggler. High dropkick by the heel. Cena was slow to get up, but he swatted away another dropkick attempt. The full comeback was in motion, with a few shoulder tackles and a suplex. Five-Knuckle Shuffle found the mark. Ziggler went up, but fought out of the AA. He put the sleeper on Cena, but Cena countered and hooked in the STF. Ziggler tapped, but Vickie was on the apron distracting the ref. Cena walked into a fameasser, which Cole excitedly called the Zig Zag, for two. Desperate, Ziggler took the top corner pad off. While the ref went to fix it, Ziggler went to hit Cena with the IC title. He missed and Cena nailed him with the AA for the win.
Winner: Cena, at 13:24. Really fun match, made better with great crowd heat.
As Cena celebrated, CM Punk left the broadcast booth and nailed Cena in the stomach with a steel chair, then he did the same across Cena’s back. He then walked backstage.
-The Six-Man tag match is tonight’s main event.
-A plug for Tribute to the Troops this Wednesday aired.
-They showed what happened moments ago, including the finish of the Cena vs. Ziggler match, and Punk attacking Cena.
-Moments ago, Josh Mathews interviewed Punk at his car outside the arena. Punk said he simply gave Cena a taste of his own medicine, considering what Cena did to Barrett the previous night. Wasn’t Punk attacked along with Cena when Nexus debuted?
-Sheamus walked into Jerry Lawler’s locker room. Sheamus said unlike Lawler, he earned his crown. And as far as he’s concerned, there’s room for only one King in WWE. Lawler said he’s been King since 1974. Sheamus said “tonight, the King is dead. Long live the King.”
-Vickie was irate at Ziggler backstage. She asked what kind of boyfriend Ziggler was, and he then challenged Cena to a rematch for tomorrow night on Smackdown. Vickie said she can make it happen, and in fact, will make it Cena vs. Ziggler and herself in a handicap match.
-Alex Riley and The Miz came out. They’re in six-man action, and the match is next.
-Tomorrow on a live Smackdown, John Cena faces Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero in a handicap match.
-They showed Miz on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last Wednesday. It appears no one has replaced Punk or Lawler on commentary.
(5) The Miz & Alex Riley & Sheamus vs. John Morrison & Jerry Lawler & Randy Orton Sheamus was introduced as “King Sheamus” by Justin Roberts. Josh Mathews finally spoke during Lawler’s introduction, so he’s at ringside with Cole. Orton gave Riley some strong European uppercuts to start, then dropped a high knee on his face. Morrison tagged in and kicked Riley in the mid-section. Morrison tagged Lawler, who broke out the dropkick. Riley fought back with an elbow to the head, and rammed him into the top turnbuckle. Lawler blocked a punch from Miz and hit one himself. Orton tagged in, but Miz escaped Lawler’s grasp and fled to ringside. Orton chased him back into the ring, where he tagged Sheamus. Before we could see those two lock horns, the show went to break.
Back with Riley getting an illegal shot in at a prone Lawler. The legal man, Sheamus, made the cover and got a two-count. “Let’s go Jerry” chant from the University of Texas crowd. Lawler got whipped into the corner, but avoided a shoulder charge by Sheamus. Morrison tagged in and unloaded on Sheamus with clotheslines. Morrison was still favoring his knee after last night’s ladder match. Flash Kick by Morrison, then he knocked A. Ri off the apron. Starship Pain attempt, but Sheamus got up and tripped Morrison off the top rope. Miz came in and isolated Morrison’s knee. All three heels got a piece of the injured Morrison at one point or another here. Morrison countered and sent Miz over the top rope using his leg strength. He needed to make the tag, but Miz cut him off before he could do so. Crowd was still very into things. Sheamus turned Morrison toward his own corner and taunted the faces while applying a half-crab. With a distraction by Lawler, Orton nailed Sheamus. That did not directly lead to a Morrison tag though, as Sheamus regained his composure and knocked Lawler off the apron. He went back to Morrison, who kicked Sheamus in the head. Miz tagged in, but so did Orton, to a giant ovation. Angle slam and Cole did that stupid, “he hears voices in his head!” comment. DDT in the ropes on Miz, but Sheamus broke up the pin. Morrison took Sheamus out of the ring. Orton readied for the RKO. Instead, Riley ran in and took the move. Lawler tagged in and he hammered away until Miz went for the Skull-Crushing Finale. With the ref trying to get Riley out of the ring, Orton RKO’d Miz and Lawler got the pin.
Winners: Lawler, Orton and Morrison, at 14:21.
As the celebration commenced, the GM e-mailed Cole. The GM plugged Smackdown tomorrow night live at 9pm on USA. Raw’s contribution will be the handicap match mentioned earlier in the show, as well as one just added: The Miz vs. Randy Orton. The Miz came back in and attacked Lawler, then Orton. Orton fought him off until Riley came in. Miz and Riley high-tailed it before either could get any solid shots in. Miz and Orton traded looks from afar as they showed a graphic for the handicap match tomorrow night. The show went off the air relatively early, at 11:03 EST.

The Cena segment was awful. The singing the dancing the slow motion talking. The fat jokes at Vickie's expense are tired and so mean spirited. Btw Vickie has lost a ton of weight so good for here.Ziggler-Cena was solid. Regal-Bryan was really good for a four minute match. I'd love to see a Best of Seven series between them. I guess Punk wants revenge on Cena for spilling Punk's Pepsi a few weeks ago. If you can have a feud over spilled coffee with Kane and Jericho you can have a feud over spilled Pepsi. It would make more sense for Punk to want revenge on Orton for taking him out of the Scrabble match years ago but I am looking forward to the Cena-Punk feud. Guess the Raw Gm can make Smackdown matches too. He or she just gets more powerful.

Notwithstanding the Vickie jokes at the end, the Cena/Vickie/Ziggler segment was AWESOME. SO MUCH FUN. Vickie looked like she almost cracked up a few times. Who would've thought 5 years after Eddie's death, his widow is the biggest heel in Texas.
While Daniel Bryan + Nikki + Brie is pretty fun, I miss NXT3 heel Nikki. I'd be in favor of Diva Tag Championships if it meant Nikki gets to heel it up on the other divas every week.

well, I guess the part of what they are going to do with Orton is mostly answered (three way with Morrison and Miz)
Now Wade Barrett... they won't and can't bury him for long, the WWE didn't spend the last 6 months building him up for nothing. Is he the one that goes to Smackdown? Tuesday show would be the perfect opportunity for him to move to Smackdown.
[quote=It's False]I don't get Punk attacking Cena. It almost sounded like Punk was standing up for Barrett...which would make no sense, since the Nexus attacked HIM on their first night, too.
Yea, the WWE assumes it's audience has a memory span of a month or so.... Same with Cena-Orton, funny how Cena just forgot Orton kicked his father in the skull....
Honestly, I think Punk has worn out his announcing career, he was good for a week or two, but really stunk tonight. However, a feud with Cena will be good for Punk's career.

Was this the first time ever RAW started with one announce team and then ended with a completely different announce team calling the show?
Daniel Bryan and William Regal could wrestle forever and I'd watch every second enraptured.
This show needs even more Bellas.
Maryse is the female Santino. I remember the old Maryse before she got moved to RAW when she actually fought and was booked to be surprisingly dangerous. Now, she's all jobber comedy and it's not even funny.
Glad Melina turned. And she turned on a dime. "Oh gee! I won! Heeheehee! I'm so excited!" SLAP! "I'm a heel now." I thought she was an awesome babyface the last two plus years - except for all the smiling. Smiling all the fucking time every second. I don't trust people who smile too much. But now, no more smiling. Unfortunately, smiling may be traded in for the return of primal screaming. Just can't win.

No...there was the 2001 Raw that ended with the first WCW match on WWE programming, with Scott Hudson and Arn Anderson taking over the mics. I assume that started with Ross and Lawler, but it certainly had a different team at the beginning.

What a great Raw. What a great crowd. When was the last time there were three matches on Raw as good as tonight? Cena and Vickie was one of the funnest segments in many a long time.
I don't think this was the week for Punk to attack Cena though. Kind of lost in the shuffle of Smackdown and everything else going on. Also weird to shoot the angle when Cena isn't going to have any one-on-one PPV matches until Mania. (EDIT: unless he wins the Rumble and then wrestles Punk at Elimination Chamber. oh!) I guess it's his house show opponent when Punk starts wrestling again.
The weirdest part of the show is this dictum that ladder matches are apparently now "ladders matches."

HE SPILT THE MAN'S DIET SODA!!! Plus Cena was a psychopath on Wade and was totally bullying poor Vickie- so Cena piles the fat jokes on her (good role model for the kids, it's ok to make fun of people as long as they're fat & ugly) while giving none to Lawler, who's also fat. It's sexim and fatism, CM Punk has morals and stands up for those unable to defend themselves. He's like Jesus, if Jesus had a hip, modern haircut. And wore boots. And beat people with steel chairs. Other than that, just like Jesus.
They're really getting the mileage out of Angry Miz Girl. All those Jeff Hardy fans (after Punk took his world title or make him leave WWE) must feel kinda gypped. They had to use her though, Miz only has 2 friends.
The crowd on Vickie was pretty fucking funny, as was The Mizmas Carol (although they should've called it the much witter/smoother Christmiz Carol).
Regal's facial expressions are always amazing, his waving off Bryan was great. FYI Regal didn't tap out quickly because he's a wimp, he did so because he knows what Bryan & the Labelle Lock are capable of, and his ring position. Regal knew he was beaten and isn't full of bravado like that fool Cena. There's a reason Regal would never be forced to join the Nexus or get fired. He's still the King in my book.

Punk defending Barrett really doesn't bother me. A couple of shots six months ago isn't really something to cling to - all part of competition. I think Punk would get that. But in terms of character, Barrett legitimately beat John Cena, Cena didn't honor being a "member of Nexus" for anything beyond the most mundane things, didn't abide by the terms of his termination (not once) - Punk's been ranting for weeks about what a menace Cena is, and citing specific reasons why he thinks that. Punk's attack seemed completely rational to me - he reached the breaking point.
And then, of course, he spilled his diet soda - didn't he say something at the Slammies about getting revenge for some offense? That had to be it.
The Cena thing really bugs me - hell, faces acting like heels really bugs me. Yeah, I know they are going for edgy or something now, but it doesn't appeal to me. Tonight, Cena ripped on Vickie for being fat, and physically intimidated her. Morrison was getting destroyed cleanly (there weren't even dirty "distract the ref while the non-legal guys beat the face-in-peril down" spots), and King and Orton had to cheat to overcome the situation (cheated to win too).
I am not a fan of super-face Cena, but him acting like a bully heel to boot makes it so much worse.

The Cena promo was designed for the target audience ie pre-teens who are just as mean in real life to people different from them. I guess Nexus is gone for now unless they utterly destroy John on Smackdown which I don't see happening. I am a little disappointed that Punk may no longer be broadcasting and Cena got right back up after the chair shots. The crowd made up for a rather lackluster Raw. I guess they don't have that much faith in Morrison. The wife commented that Sheamus looked like Homer in the episode where he worked at home due to being too fat with the mow mow and the stick.

Daniel Bryan is enjoying a push for the ages. Cole hates him, the twins love him, he's got the US belt, and he's got a classical orchestra entrance theme.
But that shirt. Oh, son. That's not good. You've got dragons on your tights and what looks like a Japanese alphabet on your boots. There's your shirt design elements. Not a sketch from your eight-grade geometry notebook.
Punk smacking Cena makes me think he's coming back earlier than I expected.

I can't believe people are questioning Punk's motives regarding his attack on Cena. Look at Cena. Look at Punk. There's no way in hell Punk's character could possibly do anything other than loathe Cena. He doesn't need a particular reason to attack him, he's just sick of having to see him week in and week out.
The only thing I don't like about it is that it probably means Punk's done at the announce table. Unless he was just jealous of Lawler and Cole getting involved in matches while he sat there and watched.
If Cole can get involved in a match, then it's Josh's turn to do something physical. After all, he's had 3 matches!
