| #1 Posted on 14.12.10 1046.48 Reposted on: 14.12.17 1047.45 | The Golden Globes nominations are out. This is the most interested I've been in the Globes, and later the Oscars, in years because so many movies this year have been flat out great. The Best Drama, Best Actor/Actress Drama, Best Director, and even Best Score and Best Screenplay categories are embarrassments of riches. The Best Comedy category, not so much. That almost looks like a list of the Razzies.
Interesting The Town was snubbed for all its buzz back in September, and so was True Grit, though I don't know if enough people have seen the latter.
For the record, I'm rooting for The Social Network for nearly everything except Best Actress for Natalie Portman in Black Swan. But again, the Drama categories are so strong, victories by Black Swan or 127 Hours or Inception or The Fighter, etc. would still please me. It's been a great year for movies.
There's also a television category that I'm not as versed at. Mad Men or The Walking Dead are what I'm rooting for. Parks and Recreation was snubbed, so fuck 'em.

I would have thought at least the original songs would have gotten a nod (particularly Metric's "Black Sheep"). Bummer.
Yay on the nod for "The Walking Dead"

As per usual I have only seen one of the nominations for Best Picture. As soon as I found out Social Network was as real as Toy Story 3, I opted out of that. A little surprise no love for True Grit since early word that might be a contender. This was not a great year for movies, but the fight for best director looks awesome. | Mike Zeidler

You'd rank Social Network over Inception???

I take it you're not aware the Globes are done by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and not the Twenty-Eight Year Old Nerds Association.
The Globe wins are pretty much all purchased anyways, but the Oscars should join them in separating movie genres. | DrewDewce

Be that as it may, the director of the "Nerd Movie" is himself a "Foreigner" and I would have thought he and his movie might have received a little more love that I'm certain it won't get come Oscar time (having perused the list of "Original Songs" who are eligible for Oscars the other day I didn't even see any "Nerd songs" on the list for instance). | TwisterF5

I heard Doug Benson talk about this on his latest "Doug Loves Movies" podcast. The Foreign Press has a tendency to list any drama that has a certain amount of humor in it as a comedy.
According to IMDB, the 5 nominess for Best Comedy or Musical are in fact: * an adventure/family/fantasy movie * a drama/romance/musical * a comedy/drama (this is actually "The Kids Are Alright", so I guess IMDB disagrees with you, assuming comedy/drama makes any sense as a genre) * an action/comedy/crime movie * an action/drama/thriller
I've heard it said that comedies don't translate as well in foreign languages, so I wonder if that's part of the trouble. Or maybe they just think actual comedies are beneath them. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
