Forget about earning more than A-Rod, he would be earning more than pretty much every other player in baseball (until Pujols signs his new deal).
Seems to me like the logical midpoint is four years, $80 million. And, again, Jeter had a poor 2010 but was awesome in 2009 --- let's not totally write him off as a declining player quite yet. It wouldn't shock me at all if Jeter comes and has a fantastic season next year to prove that he's not on the downhill slope. | TheBucsFan

How many players in the history of baseball have had the worst year of their career at age 36, only to come back and have a $20 million-worthy season at 37 or older?

So is saying the current AL Gold Glove Shortstop has no defense.
Also, leadoff batting isn't about BA, which is going to drop when you go from 2 to 1. It's about setting the table, OBP. Jeter's was .348 while batting first, compared to Jason Bartlett (.324), Denard Span (.331), Elvis Andrus (.338), Shane Victorino (.345), Brandon Phillips (.302), and Andres Torres (.332). The only postseason leadoff hitter that outclassed Jeter in this regard (along with a few others) was Martin Prado, with a .362 OBP while batting first.
Ichiro got $18 million last year, and his OBP was .359 with a .315 batting average, and 24 fewer RBI. He was 37. | graves9

Jeter is coming off a horrendous year in 2010 and was pretty bad in 2008 too. The 3 year 15 mil per year offer is more than fair. He gets a 2 year deal worth 18-20 mil at best in the open market. He is being greedy and deluded.

He low balls Jeter, and invites him to look elsewhere for a better contract.
If he lets the Yankee captain, and the heart and soul of so many of those world championships, walk, he'll be the most hated man in New York.
(Not to mention, he declines giving Mariano Rivera arbitration.)
Lowballed? You can't pay a guy for his past. He isn't worth 15 mill a year at this stage maybe half. | Mr. Boffo

Not no defense, but definitely not Gold Glove worthy. I'd say average defense at best.

It was actually pretty horrible that Jeter was leading off. Of Yankees who had at least 200 PA in 2010, Jeter ranked 9th out of 10 in OBP. Only Curtis Granderson had a worse OBP. In hindsight, with knowledge of how everyone hit in 2010, Jeter should have been somewhere in the bottom half of the lineup. Brett Gardner should have definitely been leading off.

Ichiro was coming off an OBP of .396 in 2009. If Jeter's OBP falls as much in 2011 as Ichiro's did in 2010, he won't even be worth the $15 million per year the Yankees are offering him. | Lexus

Aside from your take on the man`s glove I agree wholeheartedly. Jeter`s trademark since `06 is hitting into the DP (I will NOT go tracking that stat), His overall production has been slipping. The issues, all alleged 15 million of them, reside in how much the Steinbrenner family can make off the Jeter name at this point.
I just tossed the Ichiro numbers out there as comparison since he`s the creme de la creme as a leadoff batter. | Lexus

When he signed the extension in July 2007 he was in the middle of a season where he would have an OBP of 393 and a BA of 353. And, as much as people love The Captain, I suspect Ichiro is far more important in marketing terms to the Mariners than Jeter is to the Yankees. If Derek Jeter leaves, are there really going to suddenly be large swaths of empty seats at Yankee Stadium, unwilling to watch the $200 million lineup simply because they changed the SS?
Also, Jeter was 5th in the AL last year in GiDP with 22. He was 4th in 2008 and 7th in 2007.

There's a precedent for you, because Jeter does not equal The Babe.
When Ruth was sold to the Yankees, it was because he was demanding the Red Sox DOUBLE his salary.
When Ruth was sold to the Braves, it was because his wife, who was his business manager, told him to not accept the contract offer that the Yankees had made. He was also trying to get the Managers job starting the day he quit playing.
He was sold to the Braves so that they could use his name to draw fans, because they were getting trounced in the attendance numbers by the Red Sox. He was shot as a player, and was told he'd be VP of the Braves, manager, and part owner, that's the ONLY reason Babe Ruth played one more season.
So yeah, he's no Ruth. Plus Ruth won 4 World Series titles with the Yankees. Jeter has 5. | graves9

Well now that means he's better. This is coming from a guy that think C.C should have won the CY Young and thinks Jeter is getting lowballed with a 15 mil a year offer. Have you seen Jeter play lately? Oh and Ruth is the best player ever while Jeter was never even the best player on the team.
