FINALLY
THE McGILLICUTTER
HAS COME
TO
RAW

Daniel Bryan lost. Oh well. This was the opposite of last week. He was in his home state, he would've been lucky to get out alive. Instead he had a great match and got tons of offense in. If that match proved anything it's that Bryan can be every bit the 2000 Chris Benoit in terms of being able to mesh with the ingrained WWE-style main eventers and have really good matches with them (and lose). Great stuff. I figure he's not on the team because the longstanding tradition of Bragging Rights requires a U.S. champion vs. IC champion match.

This was the best night of wrestling on Raw in a long time. Morrison and Kidd tore it up briefly too in a flashback to their 2009 Superstars Series.

I wonder how conflicted R-Truth must feel being that he was on last year's winning Smackdown Bragging Rights team.

As for Santino making the team, I am guessing that Tamina and Ezekiel Jackson will destroy him next week and take his spot. Still, if I'm captain, I go Zack Ryder with my first pick no questions asked.

Punk was actually the one heel on Smackdown I would've been excited to see work with a face Edge but I guess on Raw he can slide ride into Jericho's glue spot.

So Evan Bourne is going to have shoulder surgery and the angle tonight was to put him out. This means the Evan Bourne 83 week Raw losing streak will not be broken in 2010. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Barrett is doing an awesome job bullying Cena. I don't know why but for some reason Wrestling Slavery is more believable than Shawn Michaels being forced to take an entry-level position at Layfield Energy.

That was some, uh, impressive improvisation by ring veteran Randy Orton after the messed up 450. (What, no 450 into the RKO?)

It figures Kaval beats McGillicuddy, Riley, and Husky on NXT and he's the only one of them not getting a push. Maybe he'll be on Team SD no he will not. I'll guess Show, Edge, Rey, Alberto, Kofi, Rhodes, and McIntyre. Bold choices I know.

Good night for Raw, they have to be pleased on how the show went with the exception of the women's division. And Wade Barrett is golden right now.

Watching Barrett on the mic, he seems like he's been at this forever. He's got a real confidence and presence about him that you don't usually see in people as new as he is.

As soon as the 450 was botched, I figured poor Justin Gabriel was going to be murdered at the hands of Randy Orton. That's not to say it didn't happen backstage after the match.

Obviously would've been thrilled with Bryan winning, but he looked like a million bucks. I thought he had him with the sunset flip counter to the Razor's Edge. Bryan collapsing just before that reminded me of Bret Hart playing possum with Diesel at Survivor Series.

I don't watch SmackDown, so Punk on Raw is sweet.

If the GM wanted Cena on the team so bad, he should've just put both him and Miz on the team and made the match for the captaincy only. Not as dramatic, I suppose, and goes against the whole "gotta win to get in" edict.

I appreciate the effort with Cole, but his selective heeldom is really annoying, and I just don't find him and Lawler to be nearly as believable a heel/face team as the great ones of the past, like Ventura/Monsoon or Heenan/Monsoon. Hell, I don't even find them as believable as Lawler/Vince from the mid-90s.

Megatron Wade Barrett is too concerned with making Optimus Cena tow the Decepticon line and help him win the Autobot Matrix of Leadership from Orton Magnus to notice Starscream Otunga has the ear of Soundwave Slater and Laserbeak Gabriel.

King: "Listen to this Daniel Bryan chant." Cole: "The WWE Universe wasting their breath." Me: LOL

I liked R-Truth telling Cena to just quit. He can't, man! It says so on his shirt: "Never give up!" The WWE Universe even read the shirt and chanted it last week.

I've watched Smackdown once since May and I really wasn't paying attention: When did Punk lose the shaggy chest hair and get the new ink over his pecs?

Is Zeke ready to come back? I completely forgot he got drafted to Raw.

I'd like to think they have a grand plan for Kaval. Unfortunately, having watched the E for so long, I sense that Kaval's losing streak IS the grand plan. That SD list looks pretty accurate to me. I'm especially excited about potentially seeing Morrison's flipping uranage again and, really, the only guy he could pull that off against is Rey.

So am I supposed to believe that DH Smith no-showed the triple threat match because Tyson Kidd wiped him out? They're doing the face/heel dynamic backwards.

"Nothing personal!" I'm guessing CM Punk isn't too happy with being put on the trading block. So I guess with Punk on Raw, all that's left to ask is...when are Gallows and Mercury getting future endeavored?

Great moments in commentary: Cole angrily denouncing the possibility of Bryan on the Raw team since 'remember what happened when he was on the team at Summerslam, King? We lost!' I could almost hear the Botchamania guy editing a 'Huh?' sound clip and possibly a Cornette face the moment those words left Cole's lips.

Having his head shaved apparently meant also shaving his chest and trimming down the beard.

When his arm was hurt a few months ago, he apparently took the opportunity to get Even More Tattoos.

What hayden said about Barrett on the mic is dead on... he never stumbles, he never hesitates...the man is natural.

Last night's Raw was the first solid show (overall) in awhile.

After last week's murder on Daniel Bryan, last night's match with Sheamus was good overall and it though he lost, Daniel Bryan still looked good against Sheamus.

CM Punk on Raw for Edge? Not a bad choice at all. I liked it afterwards when Punk destroyed Evan Bourne and said "Don't take it personal" when he had him in the anaconda vise (I hope Punk never goes face).

In terms of (another) botched 450 splash, I wonder if it was Orton's fault for not rolling out in time. It looked to me that Orton was supposed to roll out of the way but instead, did it a bit too late as Gabriel landed on Orton's arm; I could be missing something which wouldn't be the first time.

Oh how Barrett is such a natural on the mic and as a heel. The whole Nexus/Cena thing is pretty interesting as it has made "Superman" (Cena) human and in the words of Wade Barrett, "...a disgrace".

Solid matches with some solid angles actually made Raw interesting and worth watching almost the whole time (the only thing I didn't care for was Zack Ryder v. Santino for a position on Team Raw ) but otherwise, everything else was really good.

Minus Cole tripping over his own heeldom last night, it was a good show. I did really buy Cena's frustration over Wade's verbal punking. R-Truth's heel turn is coming or they are planting the seeds when not if Cena gets his freedom back, he will be alone. Cena being a marked man by both faces and heels has some great possibilities. I would have put Bryan over Sheamus just for Miz to deal with him. Not sure what or if they are going to do anything with Bryan for the PPV. I do think NXT did its job in creating new stars, but I just hate the fact that all you have to do is attack Cena and boom you get a contract. It makes NXT kinda pointless. Another good Raw and I like Punk joining the roster. The computer GM has outlived its usefulness without Edge or Jericho going after it.

They didn't just attack Cena, they dismantled the entire show and disrupted ever RAW event they could for about a month.

I like how the show as a whole is building right now. Not sure how you book Orton/Barrett, though - to sell the Cena stip Barrett kinda has to go over, but Orton's superhot. I really don't want them to go the "Cena turns on Barrett" route so early, so I'm hoping he reluctantly costs Orton the belt to sew the seeds for their eventual megaclash down the road.

Now that they're making it obvious that Cole is the GM, I worry that they'll try a last-minute swerve.

Is Ted DiBiase Jr getting closer and closer to needing a repackaging? And to think, around this time last year most people thought the break-up of Legacy would lead to DiBiase getting a mega face push. He just doesn't have 'it'.
Conversely, Barrett seems to have 'it'. Just don't book him against Hunter after he returns or else that will be a 55 minute promo-thon.
From the FU to the Attitude Adjustment to the AA? Is Arn Anderson attending meetings for a drinking problem? Also, could Cena momentarily sell crashing into the barricade rib first on two occassions?
R-Truth's speech would have been so much more effective if he invoked the spirit of Shaska Whatley.

Punk trimmed the beard, and it's enough of an adjustment to suggest he can also adjust his gimmick. I want him in the hunt for a title (a Bryan feud can only be magic) instead of treading water as a monologist.

The Passion of the Cena needs to be tweaked. They can't end each RAW with a crest-fallen Cena walking up the ramp.

Again, I hope another missed 450 doesn't get the move is banned. With Bourne out, this would be the time to exile top-rope flips.

I'm in the midst of managing my expectations now for CeNexus. I thought the last segment on RAW was really good with Wade Barrett ripping John Cena on the mic. (And not to beat my oh-so-clever metaphor to death, but put a helmet on Barrett and he would look a lot like Megatron.)

I realized last night though that this Cena in the Nexus angle is - not so much botched - just not what I was expecting or wanting. Oh sure, I wanted Cena humiliated for a while and forced to do dastardly things for the black and yellow N. The humiliation of Cena has been fun, but Cena hasn't really done anything too dastardly. (Then again, the Nexus stopped being dastardly after the Bret Hart in a limo stunt. Nexus evil settled into the safe confines of PG ever since where the worst thing that can happen to you is taking a 450 from Justin Gabriel.)

But simply put: I wanted more. First and foremost, I wanted the visual of Cena clad in Nexus gear, forced to surrender his identity. And especially forced to surrender his music. (A few weeks of not having to hear "The Time Is Now" - is that too much to ask?) It really cheeses me off that Barrett and the Nexus are allowing Cena to maintain his identity. Even something as simple as which arm Cena wears the N armband on - he's not even uniform with the group. Why wouldn't Barrett enforce that? Why wouldn't the rest of the Nexus complain about it?

I get the business reasons: There's still Cena merchandise to sell. Would the children of the WWE Universe stop buying Cena merchandise if Cena isn't wearing it? Of course they wouldn't. I mean, last week they began chanting "Never Give Up!" completely unsolicited. I think the CeNation's devotion to Cena is unwavering at this point. I would even wager they'd buy Cena merchandise even more to show emotional support for Cena if he himself can't wear CeNation gear.

Right now, it seems like Barrett's master plan is twofold: Use Cena to help him win the Matrix of Lea -- sorry, the WWE Title, and once he does, use Cena to help him keep it. That's fine, and I guess for WWE Creative, that's story enough. And it should be pretty fun regardless, as last night's browbeating of Cena proved. Barrett is a magnificent tyrant on the mic and Cena's frustration is excellent.

But still, c'mon, I wanted a little more. It seemed like this was the perfect opportunity to explore Cena's dark side, a corruption of the innocent, of sorts. This is WWE's big shot to test Cena as a heel while still not turning him heel; they can for a few well-written weeks of television, have their cake and eat it too. But they're offering too many easy outs. Cena keeps pandering, reminding the children "I don't really wanna do this! Please still cheer for me! I was hoping there'd be an effort to actually integrate Cena in the Nexus. I was hoping for a more complex story. Silly me.

I especially hate the Anonymous GM's decree this week that the Nexus answers to him and Barrett not challenging that claim. The Nexus is supposed to be an autonomous entity onto itself. Wade Barrett and the Nexus answer to nobody. That's the point of Nexus! That's why they're dangerous to RAW and WWE as a whole!

Instead, they've sowed the seeds of the Nexus ending. Not because Cena is there fighting evil from within as he said he wanted to do, but because Otunga has already been working against Barrett for several weeks, and Barrett is too distracted with his ambitions of breaking Cena like a horse and winning the WWE Title to manage his own group.

On the other hand, the scene with R-Truth telling Cena to just quit because the boys in the back don't trust him anymore is full of potential. Whenever CeNexus blows up, the idea of Cena being a man alone on an island with neither faces nor heels nor Nexus as allies could be pretty awesome. But Creative won't do that. They'll do the safest story possible so as not to upset the children.

Think of the children! Won't someone please think of the children!

Then again, how do you best undermine someone’s ideals and make them look like a hypocrite? Do you strip them of their identity? Or do you trot them out as they would have always, but instead have them undermine their values while looking just like they always would?

Perhaps that’s what we have with John Cena. Barrett will continue to trot out Cena and have him do whateverstuffs all in his usual colors, because THAT is how you can break the “Cenation”. Their hero still looks their hero, talks like their hero, by all accounts seems like their hero. But he isn’t acting like their hero anymore; he’s helping cheaters cheat. He’s not fighting back like he always did, and by some accounts one could say that he HAS finally given up. In order to continue wrestling he has had to go against his ideals. And this is what could begin his decent into being a heel later on, when Cena rails against everyone for not understanding why he did what he had to do.

Am I happy with how it’s being booked? A bit. Otunga, for as horrible as he is in the ring, has done a great job as Starscream. His line of “I’ll TOTALLY take on Randy Orton. But if you REALLY want some damage done, Gabriel and his 450 will do the trick”. And of course proceeding to intentionally get himself and Slater thrown out of the match (highlighted with King saying “look at Slater, he’s telling the ref that he didn’t even do anything!” or something like that). They’ve showcased Gabriel enough that he’s going to be a star in the future. Slater has some great facial reactions, although he needs to drop the dopey persona. Overall, it could have been handled much worse.

Two things I noticed last night;

- Lawler, every so often, does say some insightful things. Things like the above where he pointed out Slater didn’t do anything for example. And in the Laycool segment, rather than shouting “puppies” or anything else of the like, he seriously said something to the extent of “get these two women out of here”.

- Once he’s in the air Gabriel can’t help where he is landing, it’s up to Orton to get out of the way. And he didn’t. Sometimes I wonder if it’s less the others and more Orton the cause of some of these issues. And after this and the Big Show, I wonder if they’ll stop the 450 form being used at some point.

While I appreciate that Barrett is great on the mic - his wordrate is equal to Bryan's workrate - I am somewhat disappointed in his skills as a supervillain. A better evil mastermind would have thrown Cena a bone and hit him with a "John, I know this is hard, but being in the Nexus isn't all bad..." and let Cena off the leash to destroy a mutual enemy in The Miz, or at the very least sent the Nexus down to wipe out Riley in the main event to attempt to seduce Cena to the darkside.

Slater and Otunga coming down to the ring (I assume Gabriel would still in the back getting "I HATE SOUTH AFRICA AND I HATE YOU!" yelled at him by that point) to chase off Riley, only to have The Genesis of McGillicuddy and Husky to come out later as Barrett's other puppets would have been fine devious supervillainy. Either way, I'll assume I wasn't the only one hoping that Riley would get confused during either the opening or closing segments and just start attacking Miz before celebrating with him.

I will reaward Barrett some villain style points for having Husky and The McGillesis dressing in matching street clothes, though. I like the potential implication that, while the Nexus doesn't wear matching ring gear, they may all secretly dress alike whenever they aren't on TV.

That said, I appreciate the way they're juggling alliances by having Miz and Barrett as antagonists, allowing for a weird moment like the crowd actually booing Cena for attacking The Miz to save Barrett. That's pretty great and is a sure sign of everybody doing their job really well. I hope they consider that there needs to be some kind of similar Punk/Barrett dynamic considering Punk took almost as bad of a beating at the Nexus debut. An interlude where Punk rails on Cena for rolling over when Punk himself had the guts to try to save Cena the first time could be a quality segment.

I like Truth as Cena's secret best friend and conscience, but yeah, what a shit plan, buddy. I was hoping he'd follow up "But...there's...another...way..." with "You can fake your own death!" That's the kind of outside-the-box help Cena needs. And if Cena asked how that would help him stay in WWE, Truth could have just taken out the kit where he keeps his Pretty Ricky costume and said "Leave that to the Baron and me!"

If only the positions were reversed so they could work in a "Otunga? Is that you?" "GOOGLE ME!" exchange before Otunga would awkwardly spinebuster Barrett into ashes.

Much like Cena was a genius to join the Nexus so he wouldn't have to wrestle Otunga anymore, the developing angle with Otunga is smart if it keeps leading to Otunga volunteering for matches, but quickly talking someone else into actually doing them for him.

Agreed, and with your sentiment that there's so much more they could be doing with this. I hope the Truth segment actually means they're going to follow through with Cena being forced to beat down Truth, Morrison and eventually attack Orton, which would give them plenty of time to have Barrett gradually force Cena to replace his gear with Nexus gear, while also having a guy like Punk remind him that while Punk did try to make the save, none of these so-called friends that Cena doesn't want to hurt could be bothered to come out and save him while he was being stretchered out and announcers were literally being strangled.

If they slowly build to that - and there's little reason to think they care enough to do it - the eventual Nexus-clad Cena and invincible insane snake/human hybrid Orton angrily pressing their foreheads against each other could be a seriously huge moment. But, yeah, I do worry that they have neither the patience nor foresight to actually build to that rather than just jump to "Cena angrily presses his forehead against Barrett...and then gives him the Attitude Adjustment!" ending.

But they're offering too many easy outs. Cena keeps pandering, reminding the children "I don't really wanna do this! Please still cheer for me! I was hoping there'd be an effort to actually integrate Cena in the Nexus. I was hoping for a more complex story. Silly me.

I thought Truth started laying the groundwork for this, "if they told you to take one of us out, you'd do it, wouldn't you." ":-/" I can't guarantee success but week 2 does seem early for Cena to be tearfully destroying Mark Henry. I hope they get there.

I thought the music was a missed opportunity already. Last week was great when they started his theme, cut it off, and played WeR1 instead. They should do that every time.

Yessss. I actually said "did you?" out loud. He's lucky Lawler didn't know any better to really burst his bubble. Cole knows that finish was so dumb he's just going to pretend it was the opposite.

I don't think they necessarily have an identity picked out, but I could be wrong. I think they have a few people in the back of their mind who they could have it be -- Batista makes the most storyline sense based on when he left but they're not 100% sure he's going to come back, Cole would be good at it but they might want a bigger payoff -- but if you are trying to decipher all the things the GM said and which people he's favored like they're actual consistent clues, you will probably be disappointed.

And if Cena asked how that would help him stay in WWE, Truth could have just taken out the kit where he keeps his Pretty Ricky costume and said "Leave that to the Baron and me!"

ah god dying

I actually watched most of this show and I'm sorry, I just can't get into this Barrett/Cena storyline. My girlfriend caught the last part with Barrett yelling and Cena and she asked "Why doesn't he just hit him?" I explained that he would be fired and the whole storyline and she made a face and said "Why would they fire him? Isn't he their most popular wrestler?". That right there sealed the big logic hole for me. It seems silly that Cena would take (in storyline terms) all this abuse and wouldn't haul off on him. Could you imagine The WWE doing this storyline with Austin? Or Rock? Even when they did this with Shawn Michaels, at least they made him retain SOME dignity and didn't make him look like a total tool. People who watch shows or movies WANT to get into them and be the character and root for them (like John McLaine or Hulk Hogan) and right now, they aren't presenting Cena in a role like this (and he's supposed to be their main guy). Who wants to watch their 'hero' have a puss on, act all emo and go thru 'angst' over a situation that really, isn't hard to get out of? I remember someone saying that the difference between Orton and Cena is that Orton does things while Cena has things done to him, thus making Orton a more interesting character. This is a classic case of that.
