According to ESPN, Tracy McGrady and the Pistons have agree to a 1 year deal worth $1.35 million (veteran's minimum).

More likely than not, T-Mac will play off the bench for a team that until the last couple seasons, dominated the Central Division and were playoff regulars.

Tracy McGrady has not had a healthy season for 5 seasons now but playing as a reserve not also may help T-Mac be a little healthier but could be of some use to Detroit as a role player.

Thoughts and Analysis:

T-Mac is no longer the all-star player and is almost within the realm of irrelevance. However, playing off the bench may be beneficial to him and the Pistons. Teams are reluctant to pick up a player who has had a history of injuries and this could perhaps be the last spot (and chance) for Tracy McGrady.

Thoughts and opinions........

Vet minimum so no risk for the Pistons. If McGrady has something left and the Pistons struggle, they can move him at the deadline for a draft pick or a young player. If he sucks, they cut him and pay him the remainder of the minimum.

Good move for the Pistons, assuming of course he can stay humble, play the role they want him to play, and not insist on trying to be "the man", hog the ball and score 25 points every game. (See also: Allen Iverson.)

I'm pretty sure this is it for McGrady, which is very sad for me as a long-time fan. I thought he was destined for Kobe-level greatness, but the continued playoff heartbreaks and the recent severe injury troubles kept him from doing that. Now he's going to play a reserve role for a team that isn't going to be very good this year. Not the most glamorous way to end a career but it sure seems like it's winding down.

I wonder if there is a team in his past who holds him in high enough regard to do the whole "sign him so he can retire a [insert team name here]" thing like we've seen for many greats in the past. Then again, if I was to be objective about it, I wonder if he's had a good enough career to even warrant that kind of special treatment.

And here's some bonus quasi-insider reporting for anyone who's interested/will indulge me: in my line of work I find myself talking to some pretty interesting people from time to time. A few months ago I had a series of phone conversations with McGrady's personal trainer and right hand man. He basically travels around wherever Tracy goes and works only for him. He was with him during his rehab after knee surgery and has been with him during both off-seasons since then. Anyway, he told me he's been itching to start up his own gym, but he said he can't and won't do that until McGrady retires. And judging by the rest of our conversations, he expected that to be next season, if not this one. So take that for what it's worth.

Did Ben Gordon retire? Do the Pistons really need another guard with point guard size but with a 2's willingness to put up a lot of shots?

Well he is a 2, not a point guard, and I guess the theory is 'he can't hurt'. They won, what, 28 games last year? Not a terrible idea, not like they're going anywhere anyways.

Gordon actually plays 2 as well, does all the same things McGrady does, and neither will be too thrilled with having to share minutes.

It might still work if they were the only two 2s. But they're both on the bench behind Richard Hamilton, who also does a lot of the same things.

Signing McGrady seems to mean either Gordon or Hamilton isn't going to be here, but they're both signed thru 2013 and neither is easy to move. Maybe there's already a deal in hand?

(or maybe McGrady's actually just camp fodder)

It makes sense as a low risk move if the Pistons weren't already loaded with players with the same skill set, but Joe Dumars really doesn't have a clue and has been somehow hiding the fact that he's not a very good GM for a long long time now.
