Studio Casting Grid Names Riddler as Batman 3 Villain
We're not officially kicking off Comic-Con until tomorrow, but today we have a huge bit of news regarding a comic book flick that likely doesn't even have a presence at this year's convention. We've gotten word from a reliable inside source with a studio casting grid that The Riddler is listed as a character for Chris Nolan's highly anticipated to the sequel to The Dark Knight, which is still called Batman 3 at Warner Bros. Even more interesting, the actor currently listed in the same grid to play the assumed villain is none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose status is just listed as "interested." Let's all say it together now: Hell. Yes!
We'd like to point out that this news should be considered confirmation that The Riddler is the villain in Batman 3 and less confirmation of the recent suggestions/rumors regarding Gordon-Levitt's casting as the enigmatic villain. A casting grid is used in the industry to keep production companies, agencies, etc. in the loop on a project's progress and the roles available for actors to potentially take. These documents are used for business planning in the industry and by no means would use internet speculation to list a character that may not even appear in the film. But when it comes to listing actors, this is info that can change at anytime, and just because an actor or studio is interested in one or the other, does not mean it will actually happen.
We're also cautious because the age range listed for the character is 35 to 45, and with Gordon-Levitt being 29 years old falls a little short of the mark. Of course, this wouldn't really be a reason for him to be excluded as characters can be modified in the script to accommodate a favored actor. On the lighter side though, the actor is fresh off working with Nolan on the brilliant Inception, so they've surely developed quite a working relationship as Gordon-Levitt called him "the genuine article… a real artist" and "a unique voice." For now we'll consider Gordon-Levitt's involvement a rumor, but seeing The Riddler in a studio casting grid is solid confirmation of Nolan's villain for Batman 3. Hopefully we'll get an official confirmation sooner than later.

I have liked his recent portrayal in the comics as a rehabilitated rival detective to Batman, but as a villain he just seems too corny. It worked on the old TV show, but I can't see it working these days. But if Nolan takes an unconventional approach to the character as he did with the Joker, who knows? I would rather have Catwoman, but I know others disagree. This is why they should have saved Two-Face for the sequel. But who am I kidding, they could trot out Clock King and Crazy Quilt and I would still see this opening weekend. | lotjx

However, I thought Ledger was a bad fit for Joker, but a corpse and oscar later and I was proven wrong sorta. I am thinking Two-Face is coming back as well and Riddler is more of the in the shadows villain. I am with kenny, the villain won't matter, yet if he sucks then I am thinking it won't make the same as Dark Knight since it was morbid curiosity for Dark Knight as well as kicking some ass until the idiotic ending. | BigDaddyLoco

The Villain is what always matters in a Batman movie. Batman is more like John Cena not The Rock, a decent enough worker on his own, but he's rather bland after awhile and needs a strong foil to bring out the best in him.
There's actually a lot of ways they can modernize the Riddler. I don't think they have to stick to the formula of a guy running around in a leotard covered in question marks. If they do go that way they should pick this guy ... http://www.lesko.com/Lesko-Photos/page12/IMG_0156-pp.JPG

I don't see any nameplate on the bank managers desk. Maybe I'm missing it?

I can find lots of comments on blog posts and such around the Internet claiming the nameplate on the bank manager's desk says E. Nigma, but I can't find any photographic evidence.

From what I can tell from reading the posts in that link, there was an "E. Nigma" nameplate on the bank manager's desk in some comic book, not in the TDK movie itself. Not sure if that's the case or which comic/issue it allegedly appears in. That said, maybe I'll break out the BluRay copy of TDK and watch it on the projector to see if I can catch it.

There was a bonus comic book that came with the DVD when I got it, so my best guess would be that's what they're talking about.
Unfortunately I've just moved flat and when I had a look for it last night I couldn't find the DVD never mind the comic so......I'm no phucking use to anyone really. Still, maybe some conscientious soul here has a copy they could dig out.
I'm not entirely sold on the Riddler as a lead villain for the third movie, but the first two films were sufficiently awesome that I have faith in whoever they go with.

I will say, I thought Jim Carrey did a really good job as The Riddler way back when and would have no problems seeing him do it again. Of course, to choose between Johnny Depp and Jim Carrey is ridiculous - Depp all day and all night. | Tenken347

Jim Carrey was fucking awful as the Riddler. He just mugged through the whole film. It was like Jim Carrey was doing a bad Jim Carrey impression. Playing the Riddler as a giggling, mugging lunatic just makes him a lesser copy of the Joker. The Riddler is a clown, maybe, but he's the Austere to Joker's Harlequin - reserved, with thin veneer of civility overlaying his madness. He should be more or less the exact opposite of how Carrey played him. | General Zod

I second that emotion. It was one of Carrey's worst performances, and that is saying something. The Riddler has a lot of potential and I think Nolan can find the right actor to execute said potential. | samoflange

While many iterations of the character have been silly, it is crazy to think that Nolan's version would be anything like that. I'd expect another minor antagonist or two, perhaps some organized crime types that Riddler uses as pawns throughout the film.
I'd also love to see a young Dick Grayson make a cameo appearance in some manner. No way do I want a Robin in the film, but if this is indeed going to be Nolan's last Batman film, it'd be cool little scene to throw in somehow. | StaggerLee
