Obviously one of the all-time greats of the baseball booth. Even in his later years when he would pinch-hit in network radio games he always had the goods. A man of many words who knew how and when to use them, and an artist of the art.

RIP Ernie Harwell.

Truly one of the greats. You know you're good when a statue of your likeness is erected while you're still alive.

RIP Ernie Harwell.

Truly the greatest sports announcer I have ever had the privilege of hearing. Ernie was an integral part of my childhood and my sports fandom. There was no greater thing than turning on the radio while getting ready for bed and falling asleep to Ernie's magical voice.

He was also a magnificent writer. My favorite piece was the essay he did for Sporting News called The Game for All America in which he wrote: "In baseball, democracy shines its clearest. Here the only race that matters is the race to the bag. The creed is the rule book. Color is something to distinguish one team's uniform from another."

Godspeed, Ernie. You will be missed greatly.

As a kid in Mt Clemens Michigan, I would listen to the radio for road games that were not broadcast on TV. He had such a smooth delivery, and seemed like a family friend. I've never heard a radio sports announcer since who's sounded so warm and friendly.

RIP Ernie.

Vin is about the only one of the old guard left. Being my age, we listened to games on those cheesey transistor radios with those little ear pieces. Wow I miss those days.

I'm still gathering myself after yesterday, the worst day in Detroit sports history. I can only echo what has been said. Growing up, Ernie was a mainstay. He exuded warmth and knowledge, and showed a love of Detroit and of the game that was positively infectious.

He was a great ambassador for baseball and a great ambassador for Detroit. Words can not describe how much he will be missed.
