Friend of mine gets a 800 on math, 6something in english, and like a 450 in writing. The kid had a 4.0 and got into Vanderbilt and had 4 AP classes in math and science but was only in honors English. He was smart, but the damn writing screwed him over (and me to a lesser degree).
But advice for Freeway420..... you may have an easy course load, but remeber colleges don't care what you got in non core courses. 4 years of 100s in weight training didn't help me out any, just like most electives won't either. You've got to get good grades in math, history, etc., thats why I suggest AP classes.

But Freeway, a GPA of 2.0 or in the vicinity will kill your chances at something like that. Also, a lot of colleges won't be impressed if you give your GPA a boost by taking PE and drama classes. UF I know has their own list of classes they use to calculate GPA to prevent something like that from happening.
EDIT: one other thing, the NMS doesn't use your score like that to determine finalists. You take your three scores (writing, math, verbal each on a scale of 80) and add them together.

| #25 Posted on 10.7.02 1046.49 Reposted on: 10.7.09 1047.43 | For the record, Freeway420 doesn't need to worry about National Merit Scholarships or AP classes because he's Canadian and we don't do things up here that way.
The closest thing to AP that we have is International Baccalaureate, which is like AP for the rest of the world (and most American schools will accept IB in place of AP). But you pretty have to get set up good and early and you have to be going to an IB-recognized school to begin with. Most public schools can't even offer you the option here in my end of the country, but I don't know what things are like out west.
As for National Merit, I don't think we have anything like that at all.
Canada is very different. We haven't yet had to resort to SATs yet because there's still some reasonable amount of consistency in public education across the country. We've also got less than a tenth of America's population, which probably has a lot to do with that.
Our Universities are not nearly as competitive either. For instance, when I graduated high school in 1994, the biggest scholarship offer I received in Canada was CAD$1,500 renewable from two different schools.
Meanwhile, I got a strong SAT score and applied to the States. I picked 4 schools from the US News top 20 list of Liberal Arts schools and got scholarship offers from three of them. I ended up with a USD$19K scholarship (that I perfectly rationally threw away after one year...)
So my advice to Freeway420 is this: if you've got a 74% average, don't sign up for Honours courses (or whatever your school has). You're better off with high marks in regular level courses than low ones in high-level courses, because the weighting won't make up the difference (and some schools won't even look at a weighted average). Unless you plan on going to the States, don't bother with the SATs; no Canadian school will even look at them (they didn't in my day, anyway). If you do want to go to the States, marks don't matter as much as SATs, a well-rounded background (i.e. lots of extracurriculars), and essay-writing and interviewing skills.
And do bear in mind that the most expensive tuition in Canada is still only about CAD$5000. Figure on more like USD$10000-30000 for an American institution. | WyldeWolf1

The crazy thing is that National Merit semifinalists are chosen based solely on PSAT scores. If Freeway420 doesn't mind coming south of the border for college, that could open a lot of doors. | Freeway

Freeway420, from reading all your posts, you are obviously smart, just a slacker perhaps? your SAT score proves you can do it -- study for the real SAT's (PSAT's are harder) and get at least a 1400 and then get a B average, do good in film school and you'll be set. Good luck man. | Freeway
