Hey all, I just got my report card marks in the mail...and I got 71, 71, 71, 81, 80, 75 and 67. Other than the 67 (which I'm going to redo/upgrade next year)...is this a bad report card? It's a 74 average, for Benoit's sake! It's 24% above failing in EVERY COURSE. Eh? Eh?

Ah, it's too hot outside...

I thought this board had a minimum 2.5 GPA, or 1000 SAT. Oh wait, that was the college I graduated from. My bad. Seriously dude, pull the grades up, you never want to be under 80 if you can help it. And if you ever need help, you have an intellectual repository of the highest order in the brilliant minds of Wienerville. Just don't ask about relationships, as that tends to get hairy ;)

DonŽt you nutty Canuks get an A if you get 80%? So I guess 74% ainŽt bad for Moose-land, but if you try to come to the good olŽUSA with that kind of average weŽll, well, I guess we could make you president if youŽve got the right daddy.

Well, you'll get into Carleton (where the 'K' stands for Quality) or SMU with that average!

That'll get you into Lakehead as well!

Well, maybe, they seem to be on this kick about improving the entrance requirements, but thusfar I've noticed nothing... I think we're so poor we'd take money from anyone at this point.

Geez, when _I_ was in school, we had a SEVEN-point scale, not this namby-pamby ten-point business. 92% was a B, 84% was a C, and 69% or below was a failing grade.

And we walked uphill. Both ways.

Wow. SMU's reputation for ``exellens'' has made it all the way to the prairies? Mentioned in the same breath as Cartoon U, in fact. I'll have to needle my little brother some more about that...

To heck with Lakehead, how about UCCB or MUN?
As for the original question of whether a 74% is any good, if you think there is any chance you could possibly do better, then do so. None of this ``it's 24% above failing'' because that's likely to give way to ``it's X% below the admissions standard of the school I really want to go to.'' As I recall, assuming you're reasonably well-rounded, 75% would probably get you in at quite a few schools in Canada (even some of the good ones). If you bring yourself up to 80% (or perhaps even 85%), you'll be picking the school instead of your marks picking it for you. They might even throw money at you.

If you do better, you stand a much better chance of dictating your own destiny. Believe me when I tell you that this is what you will want to do.

74% is not good at all. 24% above failing and 26% below perfect. You could do a lot better. Listen to what Tarnish has to say.

Well, I'm from Halifax and a Dalhousie grad, so I know SMU all too well.

I slacked off this year... I know... I've let Wienerville down. I hang my head in shame... But, my PSAT was 1350...and I'm taking the SATs next year...even though I'm Canadian. And my classes for my senior year? English, Grade 11 and 12 P.E. [they're letting me take two because I didn't get any P.E. last year], Drama, Comm Tech [video tech and stuff], Physics and Math. I can easily get an 85 average if I get my ass to work from Day One. ONE DAMNED YEAR OF SCHOOL LEFT! YES!!

Oh, by the way... How do you calculate GPA?

That means I don't want to run into you at Cowboy's this coming school year!

A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
E/F = 0

add them up and divide by the # of classes

you had 7 classes and your grades added up to a 15

so you had a C average 2.14...

I don't know what you're planning to do in life, but you definitely need to pull that up. One hope for you is that with that PSAT score, you may qualify as a National Merit Finalist (if they award that outside of the US). That can open a lot of doors to universities, but you'll want to be closer to 3.0 at that.

My GPA was a lot lower than my weight in college and I was a lot lighter back then than I am now - took a long while to overcome that obstacle.......keep that nose buried in those books

That score won't put you into Merit finalist range, but he should get noticed based on what his Writing score on PSAT was. Honestly man, if you want a better average, get into AP classes, you get college credit and the plus 10 point ensures a B even if you slack.

I got into UF w/o paying a dime because, along with a some journalism scholarships I won, I won a N.M.Scholarship with my PSAT score.

But Freeway, a GPA of 2.0 or in the vicinity will kill your chances at something like that. Also, a lot of colleges won't be impressed if you give your GPA a boost by taking PE and drama classes. UF I know has their own list of classes they use to calculate GPA to prevent something like that from happening.

EDIT: one other thing, the NMS doesn't use your score like that to determine finalists. You take your three scores (writing, math, verbal each on a scale of 80) and add them together.

Bah.

My National Merit scholarship was lame. I got $500 renewable from U.C. Davis, which I turned down to go to U.C. San Diego.

I think CRZ got a better deal with his at U.C. Riverside.
