It was the third highest opening for a Wednesday ever, behind "Star Wars Episode I", and "Jurassic Park III". Among other opening movies, "Like Mike" made $4 million, and "Powerpuff Girls" made over $1 million.

"Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones captured another $17.1M in ticket sales at the North American box office for Men in Black 2 on Thursday, the Fourth of July, raising its two-day gross to a stellar $36.1M. Down just 10% from its $19M opening day, the Sony release continued its dominance of the marketplace and is shooting to score a five-day holiday bow in the vicinity of $100M. Among other new releases this weekend, Fox's Like Mike grossed $3.1M on Thursday, its second day of release, pushing its two-day tally to $7.1M. Warner Bros. took in $1M for The Powerpuff Girls raising its two-day sum to a modest $2.5M" | Tom Dean

Were all the good jokes in the commercials, like the first one? Because I was definitely getting that vibe off it.

MIB2 wasn't all *that* bad. Not as good as the first, but sequels usually aren't. Definitely more about the aliens and the special effects than the story.
Tommy Lee Jones is still the man, though. Him and the guy who played the Tick in the live-action series kept it from "blah" territory into something that was at least pleasantly entertaining. | tomvejada

There are a couple theaters here (being Virginia Beach/Norfolk) that are only showing it three times and stopping at 3:00. I wanted to go after work, but it was too late. | Enojado Viento

The kind of world where "Scooby Doo" is making money hand over fist. A world gone very mad indeed.

Scooby Doo has a little more of a history and fan base than the Powerpuff Girls, I would venture to say.

"The box office estimates are in, and it's no surprise to find Men In Black 2 on top of the top ten!
Men In Black 2 rode the wave to bocxglory, easily setting a weekend record. Men In Black 2 beat's the previous record set by Independence Day, which grossed $85 million over the five day weekend when it was released in 1996. Meanwhile, another muchly anticipated movie stumbled out of the gate. The much hyped The Powerpuff Girls Movie was lost in the weekend shuffle, bringin in a meager $6.1 million over the 5 day weekend, much lower than expectations. Some box office analysts predicted the movie would open to as much as $25 million over the five day. Even the massive hype on Cartoon Network and Kids'WB! couldn't bring the series healthy box office receipts.
For interests sake, below is the top ten for this past weekend.
1. Men In Black 2 - $54,100,000 ($90,000,000) 2. Mr. Deeds - $18,800,000 ($74,000,000) 3. Like Mike - $13,050,000 ($20,050,000) 4. Lilo & Stitch - $12,720,000 ($103,100,000) 5. Minority Report - $12,400,000 ($96,810,000) 6. The Bourne Identity - $9,110,000 ($89,100,000) 7. Scooby-Doo - $7,030,000 (137,500,000) 8. The Sum of All Fears - $3,750,000 ($111,900,000) 9. The Powerpuff Girls Movie - $3,560,000 ($6,100,000) 10. Divine Secret of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood - $2,850,000 ($61,000,000)
Poor PPG.

there were a few ads on TV here...not enough to really show up on the radar, so to speak.
Maybe the film company is hoping for word of mouth publicity. |
