He stepped away from the game in 2004 to battle cancer, and sadly, it looks as though cancer will be taking him before too long. His recent appearance at a ceremony naming an arena after him shocked a lot of people given how frail he looked. He admitted that he probably doesn't have long to live.
Since then, a movement has sprung up to get Pat Burns inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame before he passes away. His career certainly provides the credentials to be there. I believe the HHOF announces inductees on April 15 and the ceremony is usually in the autumn, but the hope is that he can be inducted this spring before he passes away.
The website patburns.ca takes you to a Facebook group to join. If you're already on Facebook, please take a moment to join this group. Usually I would say such an action does nothing, but there is a lot of press growing around this movement, and it's centred around this group.
