Just to mention a few great films that people don't think about as comic book movies.

Road to Perdition based on the series written by Max Allan Collins and with art by Richard Piers Rayner loosely based in turn on Lone Wolf and Cub

History of Violence based on the graphic novel written by John Wagner and illustrated by Vince Locke. Cronenberg didn't even know that the script was based on a comic book until after he sat down with the screenwriter to discuss revisions.

Matrix This one is a bit of a special case. When the Warchowskis gave Joel Silver their script, he couldn't make heads or tails of it. They got Geoff Darrow to do a comic book adaptation of the script which they presented to Joel Silver. Without that comic book made for an audience of one, Matric might never get made.

30 Days of Night written by Steve Niles, illustrated by Ben Templesmith. A bit more famous as a comic book adaptation. A ferociously evil vampire film.

Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo. Maybe we forget but this was the film that launched the anime mini-boom which in turn led to the manga boom. An insanely difficult adaptation since the original series was so long (Epic published it as 38 issues). The Epic series helped launch US adaptations of manga which again eventually led to Barnes & Nobles selling them en masse.

Also, Steve Oliff's computerized colouring revolutionized the way that comics are coloured.

That plus Grant Morrison thinks the Wachowski Brothers totally ripped off The Invisibles.
Not trying to start a whole debate as to whether that claim is valid or not, just making another comic connection.

Katsuhiro Otomo hadn't even finished the series when the Anime was made and the two stories differ greatly because of that.

I don't think anyone ever hums the theme to that one.

I was a sheltered child, Lise. I suspect I was, oh, about 22 or so and someone with an early feed from HBO I knew had this on. Edited heavily, I assume. I gather it was a porno, but the version I saw was edited a lot. Based against the old serials. Funny though.

I also forgot the Flash Gordon movie - great movie, although I wasn't aware it came from a comic book. I thought it originated from the serial, I guess

It would have differed greatly regardless. There is just so much material in the manga.

In fact, it is a good thing that Otomo did the adaptation, because few others would have had the balls to make a an adaptation that was so different from the original (while admittedly staying true to the spirit of the manga)

Watchman and 20th Century Boys to name two recent adaptations both suffered from being too slavish in their adaptations.
