| #1 Posted on 9.3.10 2208.39 Reposted on: 9.3.17 2209.10 | There was nothing mind-melting this week, but the episode was probably one of the best. When you focus on Ben, it cannot be bad.
Ben's Sideways story was just brilliant. The re-telling of how Ben usurped Widmore's role as Island leader was awesome. I think we all want to sympathize and really like Ben, deep down, and his finding redemption by making selfless choices in both worlds goes a long way to doing that.
The question is - does William Atherton (Principal Reynolds) have a counterpart in the Island world?
It's interesting to see Roger Linus with the oxygen tank, considering how he died in the Island world.
It was so good to see Alex.

'Reynolds' was one of the names on the Monster's cave wall, so I'd guess that the Island-world of Reynolds was on the Island at one point or another in his life. Maybe he's there right now as an Other or was one of the dead Oceanic 815 passengers. | John Orquiola

| #3 Posted on 10.3.10 0016.33 Reposted on: 10.3.17 0017.11 | What a great, GREAT episode. That had everything that makes Lost Lost.
In two realities, Ben Linus walked away from the episode without his power but a better man because of it. I've never had to dig my own grave - yet - but I would be in even less of a rush than Ben was.
Not Lost's Dr. Linus is a good man no matter how you cut it. He didn't kill his father and in fact looks after him, he genuinely cares about his students, and pressed against the wall with a Faustian bargain, he did what his Island counterpart would didn't or couldn't do and chose Alex over his own Machiavellian ascension to power. The scenes of Ben and Alex together as teacher and student were pretty amazing. They are so much better off for the Island and Jacob not existing in their lives.
Ben's line: "The Island always gets you in the end" (paraphrase) is pretty much the moral of Lost. But not of Not Lost. I wish Not Lost would continue after Lost ends in 9 episodes from now.
Now someone explain to Dr. Arzt why Dr. Linus is a terrific guy. Arzt never got to meet Ben on the Island before the dynamite blew him up and Hurley spent two days picking him off his shirt. He probably wouldn't have liked Island Ben anyway, and vice versa.
Jack is also a changed man. Completely 180 degrees philosophically and internally from the man he was before. Well, he's still a hothead, but he found faith.
Plus we finally got some pretty solid answers on Richard. He's not a cyborg. Jacob touched him and gave him a gift. Not just immortality but unlimited Island credit to the Men's Express hidden somewhere in the Jungle. To this day, no centuries-old pirate dresses better than Richard Alpert.
I think my favorite random thing of the episode was Miles' callback to Nikki and Paulo, two jabronies buried with $8-million in diamonds. Then later, he dug up the diamonds. Miles keeps his head down and keeps doing what he's doing - surviving and being funny - and he'll end up better off than anyone else when this is all over.
"I'll have you." I don't think anyone expected Ilana to say that. Ben was so bowled over, all he could do was follow her back to the beach. I was pretty damned moved seeing Ben break down and bare his soul and his guilt the way he did.
I loved the return of the patented Lost slow motion musical interlude, featuring the reunion of Jack, Hurley and Sun, who haven't seen each other in 30 years, give or take.
When I saw Alan Dale in the opening credits, I got super excited that Charles Widmore was in this episode but I got so caught up in Ben and everyone else's stories in the episode, I'd totally forgotten about Widmore when he appeared in the sub. So Jacob wasn't lying that someone was coming to the Island. Business is about to pick up. | EddieBurkett

| #4 Posted on 10.3.10 0423.58 Reposted on: 10.3.17 0424.21 | I LOVE that Jack figured out he is the star of a tv show. He's like the all too self-aware role player, willing to rush into extremely dangerous situations because he knows that he can't die.
If Jacob's touch means you can't kill yourself, this explains the Ben's amazing timing for stopping Locke hanging himself.
Ben's monologue about Napoleon was cute. LOVED him gassing his dad again. His interplay with Arzt was amusing.
What was the significance of Ben putting the rifle down on Sun's tent? That seemed very deliberate. I'm wondering if Locke didn't trick Ben into using an empty rifle, knowing that it would ensure Ilana would shoot him on the spot. Sorta like how Rousseau killed her husband... I'll be watching to see who picks that rifle up and what happens with it.
I'm excited that Widmore is back but I'm disappointed he brought a sub. I fall into that camp that is waiting for the reveal that Locke faked blowing up the Galaga back in season 3.
Something is VERY VERY wrong about this sideways world. First we get Rose, who lived in NY, showing up as a LA resident. Now it just so happens that Rousseau and family are also there??? I'm starting to think that this new LA is actually the island (or maybe, Island 2.0 since we saw the original island sunk), and everyone is trapped within its confines, similar to Dark City or the Truman show. Maybe the island exists as imagined by whomever protects it, and Jacob envisioned a tropical hideaway, while his replacement fashions it into LA X. | Super Shane Spear

Ilana wasn't moved by Ben's speech, she just didn't want Not-Locke to acquire another ally ... Rather than have Ben join the opposing army, she just pushed aside her feelings and let the guy hang around with her camp.

| #8 Posted on 10.3.10 0926.49 Reposted on: 10.3.17 0926.50 | We're finally getting some answers now, and it's a constant reminder that it's the last season and the stakes are huge when we can get a flat answer like "I can't kill myself because Jacob touched me."
Loved seeing Alex too, and I wonder if Rousseau ever went to the island in that timeline, and if not, how she ended up in the U.S. I really like the theory that the alt timeline is just being imagined or created by somebody, because otherwise it's just not making any sense.
After this week, the big question I have is Richard's "you wouldn't believe me if I told you" when he was asked where he was. Not only am I sick of answers like that, because really, they've all been through some crazy shit and would believe just about anything at this point... but it obviously has to be something wayyy outside the box. It can't be the real world, because they already know that you can move between the two. It's gotta be some insane place on the island nobody's seen, or... a different dimension or timeline? Maybe the alt?
I loved the tease at the Black Rock. You know all the fans were thinking "OMG they're gonna prove our theories about Richard coming to the island on that ship were right!" and then it was just a total dicktease. Does that mean he's not from the Black Rock? Or were just supposed to make that assumption?
I hate to say it, but now that he's been redeemed, I'd say Ben's days are numbered. Maybe a bit closer to the finale, but I get the feeling he's in the middle of his swan song.
No previews for next week again... and I like it. I'd rather remain unspoiled and go in blind at this point. And exactly how many episodes are left? They keep saying 9 until the finale, but does that mean the 9th is the finale, or the 10th? | wmatistic

Richard is from the Black Rock, and I think that's all the confirmation of it we're going to get (or need). NotLocke said it was good to see him out of his chains, chains he give a wistful look to yesterday - not to mention he said that he had only been to the Black Rock once before and never since. They didn't come right out and scream it in 72 point font, but there's nothing further needs to be said on the matter.

| #15 Posted on 10.3.10 1426.34 Reposted on: 10.3.17 1427.46 | This was my favorite episode of Lost in recent memory. It had a great balance of character moments, island mystery, answers, suspense, and no new characters to confuse matters.
Putting the spotlight on Ben at his most pitiful state at the end of the episode was shockingly effective way to get the audience to see him in a brand new light. He's gone a complete 180 since his Henry Gale days. I hope he gets to die heroically.
Getting confirmation of the previously-all-but-confirmed Alpert/Black Rock connection was good, and I'm very glad that he seems to be solidly in the mix with a main group of characters. The dynamite scene was obvious in hindsight, but they had me hooked in and it was a very tense moment.
For the first time I feel like I really know who Ilana is and why she's there.
The return of the slow motion ending was indeed excellent. I'm pretty sure that when Sun and Jin eventually have the same moment (it has to happen, right?), I'll be wiping my eyes once or twice. | BigDaddyLoco

I really liked this episode, but I don't look forward to the Jin/Sun reunion. Sun's cute and all, but she is a dreadful actress and always sucks me out of the show thinking about how lousy she is.

That was such a throw-away little line. But I had to pause because my mind wasnt fast enough in computing it. "He wasnt there! Wait, they didnt know they were buried alive! Oh he talks to the dead! Cool so they did die!"
One of the best episodes ever. I -loved- how Ben had to make the same choice all over again. Power or Alex. And he walked into that office making me feel sad for a few moments, just like it was sad last week to see Sayid still be a killer. But no, this Ben made the best choice. Cool.
The 'slow motion reunion' was cool. Mostly because just prior to that Jack (I think it was him) had said they had to go back to the beginning, and this was such a season one vibe.
Great episode. Richard's segments were good too. Some solid answers even though not all of them were spelled out. | Big Bad

It's just that for the last year and a half, her only role on the show has been to say "Where is my husband?" over and over again. (Oh, and she cranked Ben in the head with an oar, that was pretty great.) Sun is kind of just along for the ride at this point, which actually makes me think she might end up being the final candidate as a way of justifying her existence. It would also explain why she was the only one of the Ajira Losties who didn't time-travel back to 1977 --- Jacob wanted to keep her out of harm's way. | dMp

But a thought struck me. When Lapidus told Ben that he was supposed to be flying that plane, I suddenly figured that maybe he is gonna end up being the chosen one. He managed to avert destiny once, by oversleeping, but still ended up being dragged to the island. In a way he is not involved in any of the wars surrounding the island.
