| #1 Posted on 15.2.10 1611.26 Reposted on: 15.2.17 1612.00 | I know it had already made the rounds as a rumour, but a start date for the New Monday Night Wars™ was finally announced by TNA (via a countdown on the TNA home page), and I didn't see it up here, and their press release has TOMORROW'S date on it, so I'm assuming it's new, BREAKING news.
Their press release:Originally posted by TNA (tnawrestling.com) "iMPACT!" Moves To Mondays On March 8
“TNA iMPACT!” ON SPIKE TV MOVES TO MONDAY NIGHTS BEGINNING MARCH 8
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling’s Flagship Series Will Air Live Every Other Week From Universal Studios In Orlando, Fl.
(image removed) New York, NY, February 16, 2010 – “TNA iMPACT!,” Spike TV’s highly-rated two-hour weekly series, is moving from Thursday nights to Monday nights beginning Monday, March 8 (9:00-11:00pm ET/PT), it was announced today by TNA President Dixie Carter and legendary pop culture icon Hulk Hogan at a press conference at the “TNA iMPACT! Zone” at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.
“TNA iMPACT!” will air live on March 8, with subsequent telecasts live every other week. The series features many of the biggest names in wrestling including Hogan, Ric Flair, Mick Foley and Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, as well as the hottest young talent in the industry: TNA World Heavyweight Champion “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles, “The Samoan Submission Machine” Samoa Joe and “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan.
The first ever Monday live “TNA iMPACT” broadcast on Spike TV, ran as a three-hour special head-to-head against WWE RAW on Monday, January 4, 2010, and drew a franchise-record 2.2 million viewers. Two wrestling companies have not broadcast head-to-head weekly since the “Monday Night Wars” in the late 1990’s between WWE and WCW.
“On January 4 wrestling fans showed us they’re ready for a new professional wrestling alternative on Monday nights, and we’re answering that call. Bringing ‘iMPACT!’ to Mondays is our most exciting move yet in a year that’s already been filled with huge milestones for TNA” said Carter.
"Monday nights are now officially the best night of the week to be a fan of professional wrestling," Hogan said. "My mantra has been 'change is coming' since partnering with Dixie Carter and TNA Wrestling. This change is great for the business and all fans of professional wrestling will benefit because of it."
"TNA iMPACT! has emerged as one of cable's top performers with young men, said Spike TV President Kevin Kay. "With NFL Football off the television schedule and with "TNA iMPACT’s" expanding roster of top wrestling talent, we see this as an opportunity to tap into the millions of wrestling fans on Monday nights."
Since its founding in 2002, Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling has become the world’s fastest growing professional wrestling company, currently airing in over 120 countries worldwide.
Here's the last discussion we had about it: http://the-w.com/thread.php/id=40030
I believe they were shooting for 3/1 originally, but it was probably pushed back a week because somebody did some math. Naaaaaaaah.
I think it's a big mistake to start at 9 instead of 8, and I question the wisdom of not waiting until after WrestleMania, but what the heck do I know? I've never produced any sports entertainment for television.
Let's see if they do a logo change for THAT, too, while they're at it.

I've never been one of the "they won't last a year!" naysayers, but I am dubious about their prospects, and, to be honest, about their ultimate goal as well. What defines success here? And if they don't meet that definition, can they really go slinking back to Thursday?
Still, it should be interesting to see what Hogan's idea of "raising the bar" is. I expect to see some radical roster changes -- "trimming the fat" for one thing -- but who's considered "the fat" at this point?

They actually did a press conference earlier today which you can see here.
I'm surprised they didn't go with an 8PM start time, either, honestly but I guess if you're going to do it then you have to go all out. At least with an 8-10 timeslot they could have built a solid audience unopposed *and* had the opportunity to go an extra hour on certain days to capitalize on the momentum.
Hope it goes well though - even if they don't create ratings buzz and compete head-to-head with the WWE right away, I still think a move to Monday nights is a good idea - especially so you can follow up on pay-per-views while they're still fresh rather then waiting for Thursday.
I know I'm probably in the minority, but I've been enjoying it so far. | It's False

Then again, maybe the invention of the DVR means people can have their cake and eat it too.

Hopefully tongue in cheek because there's NO way another one-time cameo will throw his career away even worse than he already has with the drug issues.

| #12 Posted on 15.2.10 1907.23 Reposted on: 15.2.17 1907.49 | I would watch TNA if it was a real alternative to RAW - I was always a bigger NWA/WCW fan than a WWF fan back in the day. If I were giving TNA a legitimate shot, I see their problems in this deal as two-fold:
1. RAW is just so damn good right now. I mean, is TNA going to come up with anything close to as good as the Shawn Michaels-story right now, or even ShowMiz or the Straight Edge Society?
2. Thanks to the DVR, recording the show and FF-ing through the less-watchable parts is much bigger part of our viewing habits than it was in 1995 or 1996. I don't NEED something to flip to during the lame parts of RAW - I just start watching 30 minutes late and build up enough fluff to FF through that I'm satisfied at the end that my time hasn't been wasted. What do I care if there is another wrestling program on at the same time or even on the same night? | wannaberockstar

I think this is the bigger story. Is it really possible to have a "war" similar to the one between the WWF/WCW back in the 90's? I know it wasn't *that* long ago but television today is more about timeshifting, hulu, and other types of "on-demand" media rather then "must-see-tv". I know my Tivo is capable of recording two programs at the same time so it's not even an issue about which program to watch.
I think, if anything, this could benefit both companies. Since the shows will be on at the same time, the audience won't have to remember to tune in more then one night a week. | RYDER FAKIN

The problem with that is, TNA will live and die by this rating, which they do on Thursday with no competition at all
I'll give Hogan And Bischoff credit - they did what they said they came to do. If they can ride out this latest wave of Russo wanting to be the biggest heel on the Internet (if we ignore him, he goes away - it works, trust me), it may pan out
Now is the for sure the best time. If TNA breaks even with what they are doing on Thursday (1.1), it's their best shot (hardly) against a real best shot (WM)
But a 1.1 rating is still a 1.1 rating to the brains in charge. And quit cussing the Orlando crowd, please. If you want them out of O-Town, SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! Go when they come to your town. Until they can get 1000 paid vs. 1000 free, like it or else

I read last night's spoilers just because I was curious if they were going to set up anything for the Destination X PPV. In the first show and a half there certainly wasn't any focus on the X Division so I wouldn't be surprised if they scrapped the X Division PPV idea. | lotjx

As much hype in mainstream media that UFC their ratings are basically the same as TNA if not worse. Their buyrate is where its at. They didn't get crushed when they went against Vince last time. I think its a good idea since there is already a built in audience for wrestling. I find myself flipping even the so-called good Raws of late. | ALL ORIGINAL POSTS IN THIS THREAD ARE NOW AVAILABLE |
