| #1 Posted on 13.2.10 0000.59 Reposted on: 13.2.17 0001.11 | Man, I've been looking forward to this show all week. I haven't looked forward to a WWE show in a while, so maybe they've gotten their groove back.
-We immediately begin with pyro and no show intro. No time to waste tonight, apparently, as we go straight into tonight's first match.
-REY MYSTERIO v. CM PUNK (w/LUKE GALLOWS, SERENA, & SLAMMY AWARD) No promo time for Punk tonight, as we're apparently that pressed for time. Todd Grisham acknowledges the Straight Edge Society losing last Monday and ShowMiz's big title victory. Striker somehow turns that into praise for Gallows's size and strength displayed during that match. Uh...ok. Punk begins with the dreaded pieface, which is no match for Rey's fists. Quick cradle gets 2. We next get the test of strength, which leads to a wrestling sequence and another Mysterio cradle for 2. Punk turns the tide with an enziguiri for a two count and applies the head scissors. Rey tries to fight back, but Punk hammers away with kicks. Punk slides Rey outside and misses a baseball slide when Rey quickly runs back in for the lucha fakeout. This leads to a commercial break at the 3:30 mark.
We return with Punk in control after a spinning heel kick. Punk tries to back body drop Rey out of the ring, but gets 'rana'd out. Rey follows, but Punk catches him by going for a back suplex and releasing so that Rey's back falls on the barricade. Yikes! Punk rolls Rey back in for a somersault senton that only gets 2 after Punk gets cocky. Rey rolls to the corner, only for Punk to catch him with a baseball slide in the back. Mysterio rolls out, but Punk gives chase and continues to inflict punishment. Punk rolls Rey back in and applies the Bow & Arrow. Rey's able to roll out for a quick near fall, but Punk takes control again with the backbreaker. More rest holds from Punk. Rey counters the corner charge with a drop toe hold, but Punk crotches him in the Tree of Woe when Mysterio tries to go up. Punk goes for a corner baseball slide, but crotches himself. Cross body gets 2 for Rey. Punk goes for a cradle, but Rey counters with a Tajiri kick for 2. Punk gets control again with a power slam that only gets 2. Punk gets put in the 619, but Serena gets in the way to distract the ref. Gallows tries to take out Mysterio, but gets hung on the ropes. Punk falls into the 619 position again, but Punk counters by hoisting Rey up for the GTS. Rey turns THAT into a 'rana pin for the three count at 15:00 shown.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio - Gallows immediately attacks after the match. Beatdown ensues, culminating with a GTS from Punk.
As a match, that was fine and all, but much slower paced that I expected. This didn't blow me away, but it doesn't mean they won't do so at Wrestlemania if that's still the direction they're headed.
-Later tonight, Batista explains what happened last week.
-Promo for John Morrison's DVD. Wait, wait, wait...Morrison's ALREADY getting a DVD? I love Morrison and all, but isn't this a bit too soon?
-Recap of the Straight Edge Society's beatdown of Rey.
-Tony Chimmel introduces Drew McIntyre, who gets new music and a new Titantron video. I'm not a fan of McIntyre's music here, as it sounds way too low key for him. Anyway, it's promo time. McIntyre asserts himself as the IC champion. He proclaims himself unstoppable before we get his opponent...
-DREW McINTYRE v. KANE: NON-TITLE MATCH McIntyre immediately backtracks, citing he has nothing to prove against Kane. McIntyre offers a match next week, but the timekeeper obviously doesn't like that, because he rings the bell, allowing for Kane to go nuts. Kane quickly goes to work with his usual uppercuts. Kane goes for the top rope clothesline, but McIntyre ducks out just in time for a commercial break.
We come back with McIntyre controlling with the armbar. Kicks and a clothesline gets 2 for the champ. Irish whip is reversed and McIntyre walks into a clothesline. Kane gets a corner charge, but a second one meets an elbow. McIntyre walks into a sidewalk slam for 2. Kane's able to get the top rope clothesline this time and calls for the chokeslam. McIntyre counters with kicks and goes for the Future Shock, but Kane's able to goozle him. He can't hit the chokeslam and both guys wind up outside the ring. McIntyre tries to run back in at 5, but Kane pulls him back out and both guys brawl to a double countout at 7 minutes shown.
WINNER: Double Countout - Lame ending to a nothing match. McIntyre beats down Kane afterwards and goes for the belt shot. Kane responds with a chokeslam. The Big Red Monster drops the belt on a fallen McIntyre and raises pyro. Looks like we have a feud. Goody.
-We go backstage to Mickie James holding an apple. Michelle McCool and Layla pop in to make fun of her eating, just to show we're STILL going with the Piggie James angle. This is looking like the angle that just won't die. Mickie sounds as exasperated as the rest of us, as she tells Michelle and Layla that the feud's over. Michelle tells Mickie that as long as Mickie's got the title, it's not over, and offers her a bowl of cottage cheese. Mickie swats the bowl away, which just happens to land on Vickie Guerrero. Huh...I could have sworn it'd land on Beth. Vickie screams like something out of "Carrie", because her voice just ISN'T SHRILL ENOUGH as it is! Michelle and Layla frantically try and clean off Vickie.
-"Just For Men" Rewind shows Mickie James winning the title at the Royal Rumble and Michelle's subsequent caking.
-MICKIE JAMES v. LAYLA (w/MICHELLE McCOOL: NON-TITLE MATCH Mickie starts with right hands, a snapmare, and a seated dropkick, before OW, MY FREAKIN' EARS! Yeah, that's Vickie Guerrero. Vickie turns this match into...
-MICKIE JAMES v. LAYLA & MICHELLE McCOOL: HANDICAP MATCH Michelle's not dressed to wrestle, so she has to take her high heel boots off first. Double team ensues, but Mickie fights back by kicking McCool away before hitting Layla with a Thesz Press. Numbers take over and Michelle hits a backbreaker. Double team continues, but Mickie gamely fights back until Michelle hits superkick in the chops. Faith Breaker finishes at 4 minutes shown.
WINNERS: Layla & Michelle McCool - I'm guessing this feud's getting dragged out until the next PPV.
-Batista WALKS backstage.
-Recap shows Batista's actions through the last two weeks.
-Josh Matthews introduces Batista. I'm still loving the spotlight Batista's incorporated into his entrance, which stays on as the interview begins. Matthews asks why, in regards to Batista's actions in the last few weeks. Batista uses an EVIL GLARE to scare Matthews out of the ring. Crowd chants for Cena as Batista drags things out a little longer. Batista doesn't give an answer, but walks out of the ring. He walks around outside, walking by a guy in a Cena shirt that the crowd actually buys as Cena for a second, thanks to the darkness from the spotlight. Ha! Batista comes back in and drops the mic before leaving. Well, that was a waste of time.
No, wait, Batista comes back in. For reals, this time. He picks up the mic...and drops it again. Ok, maybe not for reals this time. Did they REALLY have to drag that out for over 5 minutes? I could have just FFWD-ed and saved myself some time.
-Wrestlemania XXVI is 44 days away, sponsored by Slim Jim! Man, if only they were willing to get Savage to guest host Raw for one night.
-Teddy Long comes out for a promo. Long cites Batista's refusal to do...well, anything. Long decides to make Batista/Edge for next week.
-Matt Hardy and The Great Khali come out for their match. Promo time for Matt. He says this will be the best Valentines Day ever. And really, would YOU argue with MATT HARDY on this one? Matt brings out his valentine, Maria, for a hug. Ok, I'd call her an upgrade from Lita, but Matt's kidding himself if he thinks she's putting out. Ok, time for a match.
-MATT HARDY & THE GREAT KHALI v. THE HART DYNASTY (w/NATALYA) Neither of the Dynasty want to start with Khali, so Khali helpfully drags in Kidd to start. Khali drags Kidd over before tagging Matt. DH Smith distracts Matt, allowing Kidd to hit a dropkick in the back. Smith comes in and hits the Bulldog vertical suplex for 2. The Dynasty works over Matt and Kidd hits not just a chinlock, but a YELLING CHINLOCK! Moves are always more devastating when you YELL first. Just ask A-Train. Kidd runs the ropes and gets caught with the Side Effect, as the announce crew talk about Bret Hart and ignore the match. Natalya pulls Matt down by the leg, which brings Maria in for the catfight. Matt rolls up Kidd for a three count, erroneously called a two by Grisham.
WINNERS: Matt & Khali - That sure won't help The Hart Dynasty's stock, but they're doomed to limbo anyway with the awesome ShowMiz running wild.
-Recap of Ted Dibiase named as a HoF inductee.
-Raw Recap, followed by a PPV rundown, followed by a recap of the opening match.
-R-Truth comes out before getting interrupted by an ad break. We come back in time for Truth to ask us "Who Dat?" Ok, then.
-R-TRUTH v. JOHN MORRISON An intriguing face/face match. Wonder if Morrison wins as a way to pimp his DVD? Handshake of Honor starts things. Headlock reversal sequence leads to Morrison buckling his knee on a leapfrog. Ref...rings the bell?
WINNER: R-TRUTH - What? No, No Contest ruling? Replay shows Morrison's alleged injury. My Spidey Sense is tingling. Methinks this opens the door for Shawn Michaels to break into the SD Chamber match.
-Ad for Monday's Raw featuring Jerry Springer as a host. Ah, WWE...always on the cutting edge. By this criteria, we'll get Conan O'Brien as a guest host in 2025.
-WWE NXT begins in two weeks.
-Tony Chimmel introduces Edge. Promo time. Edge talks about how winning the Rumble gives him the privilege of avoiding the Chamber matches, while putting over the Chamber as a punishing match. Edge talks about hypotheticals, like facing Orton, Cena, Mysterio, or CM Punk (who he calls the love child of Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake and Charles Manson). But Edge talks about wanting to be the one to break the streak, should UT retain. Edge starts to talk about his match with Batista next week before Chris Jericho interrupts.
Jericho feels slighted over not being mentioned as a potential opponent. He talks about bad things happening to Edge whenever he's around. Jericho says he doesn't know what it feels like to have a major comeback, because he's never injured. Jericho encourages Edge to pick the winner of the Raw Chamber match, lest something else bad happen to Edge. Jericho tells Edge to watch his match with Undertaker, which naturally segues to...
-CHRIS JERICHO v. THE UNDERTAKER: NON-TITLE MATCH Edge joins on commentary. Jericho starts by running out of the ring and UT gives chase. UT punishes with apron elbows and boots before giving Y2J an apron legdrop. Edge talks about the time he briefly forced UT out of action. UT works Jericho's arm and goes for the Old School ropewalk, but Jericho crotches him. Jericho hits a second rope superplex for 2. Jericho hits the chinlock before both guys trade punches. UT wins that battle and hits a corner charge. Snake Eyes leads to a big boot and legdrop for a two count. Jericho ducks out when he sees UT call for the chokeslam. Jericho mouths off to Edge, but UT knocks Jericho around and tries to toss him right into Edge. Edge moves out of the way and gets in UT's face. UT rolls Jericho in and boots Edge in the face! Jericho catches UT with the DDT on the way in for 2. Jericho undoes the turnbuckle, but walks into the goozle. Jericho wriggles out of the chokeslam attempt and tries to cradle. He gets two, but UT kicks out and the force sends Jericho into the exposed turnbuckle. UT hits the chokeslam, but turns around right into a spear from Edge! UT sits up and tries to pick up Jericho, but Y2J hits the Codebreaker for the pin at 7:30 shown!
WINNER: Chris Jericho - Nice TV main event with a good ending that builds up drama for the PPV main event. Also like the potential buildup for Edge/UT, even if we may not necessarily get it.
END SHOW with UT looking menacing as Jericho is triumphant.
Good show tonight with some good matches. Edge/Batista next week should be interesting, as a gauge of whether Edge is fully recovered...assuming Batista wrestles. No real downside, aside from the waste of time that was Batista's "promo".

I don't know about Morrison's DVD being out too soon. If you count his tenure in Tough Enough, MNM, Johnny Nitro solo work, his reign as ECW champion, his multiple tag reigns with Miz, Dirt Sheet segments, and his Intercontienental Championship runs, you may have enough for multiple discs. I remember Jericho and Angle getting their first VHS "Best of" tapes shortly after debuting, which coincidentally was around the same time (2000).

My first thought it was way too soon for a Morrison DVD. I still think so. But checking in with the girls I know who watch wrestling - and there are many, many more now than there ever were before - THEY think it can't come soon enough. The DVD has footage of Morrison at home, Morrison training, Morrison surfing, and they seem to be be a lot more interested in that than in the match list. | Oliver

Well, so much for picking up the DVD. I loved his earlier work as much as I enjoy his current stuff.
Having a bonus DVD with all his WWE.com video features...that would rock.

| #15 Posted on 13.2.10 1540.25 Reposted on: 13.2.17 1545.12 | I thought this week's Smackdown was sub-par. The opening match with Rey Myestrio and Punk was pretty good and adding more heel status as the Straight Edge Society beat up a victorious Rey Mysterio.
I did not understand the Kane versus Drew McIntyre "match". Kane beats the heck out of Drew but it ends in a double count-out presumably to keep his "undefeated" streak alive; I thought Drew was going to beat can via count-out at the last possible moment to win, which would have been lame regardless but not as lame as the double count-out. If Drew McIntyre is the "annointed one", he better not have too many matches or events like this or he is not going to be looking like a credible superstar because Drew does have potential to make it big.
As for the women's match, what can you expect? Not too surprised with the handicap match as the feud is not over yet and not for awhile as I would suspect.
When you lose to Matt Hardy and The Great Khali in a few minutes (via the Hart Dynasty), you know you are not going places. This was no match really as The Hart Dynasty have fallen off the tag team map.
I was expecting a good R-Truth and John Morrison match but was disappointed within 2 minutes that John Morrison had an "inury" (not another Kane/ McIntyre deal again); but as It's False pointed out, this may make room for HBK to enter the Elimination Chamber, but I still wish they made the match a little longer as I waited for over 6 minutes to hear what Batista was going to say but didn't say anything. I know this adds more mystique to Batista's heel character and actions but during that duration, we could have another match (or a match that went a little longer).
I wasn't sure what to expect out of the Jericho and Taker match but it ended on an interesting note with Edge and Taker taking jabs at each other as some of are assuming or wondering if we are going to have another Undertaker/ Edge feud. Right now, I am saying Undertaker for the W at Elimination Chamber but if someone like HBK steps in for what could be John Morrison's missing spot, then I may predict something different. I guess we will wait and see...

You gotta look at it in the right perspective. A few months ago Dolph Ziggler had to beat Kane by doing the count-out trick.
McIntyre went toe-to-toe (for the most part) with Kane and it spilled to the outside and they were counted out. as a first set-up match it's better than having the heel always win. This actually makes Kane look like he might just be a threat to the title.
Oh, and when they were both standing, Kane and Drew were about as tall. Wow.
Rey/Punk was good. Loved how Punk slowed it down, thus making Rey's offense look even better.
The Batista bit wasn't great (though Dave did it well) but the 'you suck' chant when he walked away was huge. Mission accomplished.
I liked how Edge kept that tiny little heelish edge by saying he hated everyone, because he has to when they stand in his way.

Gallows placing the slack Rey onto Punk's shoulders for the G2S was FANTASTIC.
Drew's new music is very Perfect Circle/Tool, and I like it. The novelty of a deep-tone entrance music is good too, and they avoided any touches that screamed "Scottish."
Jericho's semi-clean pin on Taker was a great use of the Codebreaker. There still exists the chance of an Edge/Jericho team here after they both hit finishers on the champ. Edge can pursue the RAW champ if Jericho wins the Chamber, and they can reveal their cahoots. Of course, if they have a blood feud, I'm good with that too.
