Hello Ws,

Someone bought me a PS3 for X-mas and I just hooked it up yesterday. Of course, I used the crummy A/V cable that came with it, but I want to upgrade to an HDMI cable. My question is: Should I shell out the dough for a quality brand like Monster or can I get away with using some generic HDMI cable? Will I notice a huge difference on games and Blu-rays between the two?

Thanks all.

Unless you have an extremely long run between your PS3 and the HDTV (50 to 100 ft), you would probably see no difference between the Monster cables and the generic products. It's all digital, so if those 1's and 0's work you're fine. You may have to pay more if you have to run a cable in wall. I think the current standard is 1.3, but you should pay at most $5-10. Much better than $50 to $75 for the Monster products from Best Buy. I usually get mine through Monoprice.com but there are plenty of places on Amazon to buy as well.

Have fun! You will notice the difference between the A/V and HDMI.
whatever

Gotta agree - I purchased the cheap HDMI cables online and they work great. Brand name HDMI cables are a total ripoff.

Everything I've read indicates that the claims made by Monster Cables are either dubious, or flat out wrong. Even if you need higher end cables, it's still debatable as to whether or not Monster is the way to go.

Go with the cheaper cables, and, as long as they are HMDI certified, you should be fine.

Not to pile on, but buy the $7 cables from monoprice and don't feed into the Monster Cable beast with $100 for basically the same thing. I have had zero issues with the HDMI cables I bought for my computer, DirecTV, and PS3 to work on my big screen HDTV in 1080p.

If you pay more than one straw penny (The W at Amazon)* for an HDMI cable, you are a SUCKA - and you ain't not no sucka, right?

*OK, shipping will probably be an outrageous $4.99 if you pay a penny....but that's still a good price.**

**actually, now that I click through, it looks like $3.47 + free shipping is the way to go - also, I don't think the board gets any referral monies from a $0.01 purchase...but we MIGHT get one thin dime for a $3.47 referral. Maybe even TWO thin dimes!! ;-)

I'll pile on; get the cheap cables.

Well, while we're talking about this;

Click Here (audioholics.com) for an interesting tale about Monster Cable and how the company operates. And what happens when they deal with the wrong person.
