There's 40 replies so far in this impact thread, quadrupling the recent Impact thread high of 10. I think thats a good indicator that if nothing else Monday's Impact created a good amount of buzz.

TNA's present and future is Hogan vs. Jarrett and Dixie Carter playing tough gal.

Whoa. I wouldn't. But it's less about WWE vs. TNA than it is about girls vs. boys. Sarita and Taylor Wilde are good babyfaces and do athletic moves but they're less coordinated with worse timing than good male wrestlers.

(But there were a bunch of really good Jerishow, Hart Dynasty, and Miz & Morrison tag matches in WWE this year, FWIW.)

Obviously the storyline is going to be Hogan being torn between placating his old buddies, and doing the right thing for TNA as he's said and push those deserving. In the end, those cameos and retreads are going to be cast aside in a big moment that'll leave TNA's young guns on top

Oh, of course. And the New Breed will eventually supplant the Millionaire's Club. And the Front Line will eventually supplant the Main Event Mafia. And it's not just the same thing over and over again designed to keep the same retreads on top.

There was an overarching storyline the entire night

Yes, it was the same terrible Vince Russo calling card that he does on every reset show he's ever done: of a wrestling TV show about the booking of a wrestling TV show, based around newsletter meta-politics that do not resonate in any way as part of an on-air storyline. Week 1 is always a huge OMG shakeup that gives the illusion of change by patronizingly telling hardcore fans what they want to hear and saying that THIS USED TO SUCK UNTIL NOW WHEN IT RULES. By week 3, it's a complete mess that gets continually more nonsensical. These are the exact same people involved as every other time this exact same thing has happened, but this time they've probably got it all figured out.

FWIW, this iMPACT thread went up more than two hours after the show went off the air. Buzz, maybe? But if people here watched it, it sure wasn't live.

I think you're forgetting just how terrible Mark Madden was. Unless Bubba ruins literally every segment by being a fat asshole who never shuts the fuck up, I don't think this is a particularly valid comparison.

When did "going twenty minutes" become the number one requirement for a match's worth? Because I enjoyed Kofi/Orton and DX/JeriShow just fine as "real matches".

Not being into Randy Orton and just being DX'd out had a lot to do with it.

Didn't Hogan just arrive in the limo and come right out and talk about how he had spent all day with the talent in the back?

I don't remember who mentioned it, but I agree opening the show with random rednecks talking about why they love TNA was about as cold of a start as you could get.

Well we haven't seen Bret, Vince and HBK share the same air really since 1997, so it's vaguely intriguing at least to see how it plays out.
______________________________________________________________

How many Montreal screwjob finishes have we gotten from Vince over the years again?

____________________________________________________________
He just went back-and-forth for ten minutes with one of the biggest heels in the WWE Universe! He won't win the title any time soon, but he's hardly floundering.
______________________________________________________________

Kofi is just going to the back of the WWE bus while Orton feuds with the Vanilla boys of Legacy. Exactly what is next for Kofi? US Title? No. Feuding with Orton? No. Being another minority character on Raw that we wonder what the hell happened to his push next month? Check.

___________________________________________________________

I respectfully disagree. TNA just loaded up an already bloated roster with a bunch of guys almost all of whom have their best years behind them, and if the Bret/Vince thing tanks WWE could walk away from it with ease while TNA would find it rather harder to walk away from their deal with Hogan et al.
____________________________________________________________

Its a lot easier for TNA to walk away from Hogan since he can just go on Impact or Genesis and fire all of the Hogan lackies. Hogan then can just run a feud with Foley/Jarett which is more interesting since he hasn't been done or long enough to warrant a real feud. Where we will have a 3 month build of Vince/Bret bitching about each other. 12 years is enough for me.

This show had Bischoff's fingerprints all over it.

Opening match with X division (instead of cruisers) busting their ass, as the announcers talk about something else.

Not to mention LIMOS!!!! Only really important people ride in Limos! (well, them and kids going to Prom)

Everybody under the sun talking about how Hulk was "on his way" and a shot of a limo with "somebody" getting out of one limo, and entering the other one.

Then immediately showing Hulk coming out and shitting all over the angle of him being on his way, saying he was in the back all day.

And, wasn't Bischoff and Hogan supposed to be the FACES? Seems like they were being awfully heelish.

As for old faces in new places, when Hall and Waltman got into the ring, did anybody else get the vibe that happens when you see the jock at the high school reunion who still thinks he's cool? Waltman at least looked like he could still go, even if his persona makes people hate him on site.

Lay off Venis, he's a capable mid carder, who just needs to get out from under the Venis gimmick.
Orlando Jordan? Where's he been?

And the Ric Flair appearance really did nothing for me. If he isn't 1984 Ric Flair cutting a Horseman promo, he's useless as a mouthpiece.

And, Bubba can die in a fire and the show wouldn't be effected either way. We get it, you're Hulk's friend. Great.

Nasty Boys?
NASTY BOYS?

And the Angle AJ match was good, but not MOTY contender or anything.

But that's all he was last night. He's got the shaved head to be AJ's attacker, but they brought him out in the towel like he just walked out of his old entrance video.

Even more headslapping, Hogan was announced as headed to TNA for weeks, and they couldn't come up with a name for Val/Sean to use by now? I'd be much more interested to see him in TNA without the porn gimmick. He looks like he's in great shape.

This might be the microcosm of last night: decent personnel used in ways that dilute their potential.

The Raw rating is still coming, but Impact clocked in at a surprising 1.5. Impact averaged 2 million viewers (multichannel.com) (2.5 million in the first hour), while Raw averaged 5.5.

The TNA quarterly breakdown was as follows:
1.58
1.70
1.78
1.71
1.88
1.30
1.42
1.16
1.17
1.21
1.19
1.30

So with the exception of the first Hogan segment, it lost viewers to Raw, but not to the degree expected, and the opening hour was strong.

Regardless of how you feel about the future success or ratings of TNA (I'm strongly pessimistic), this is definitely a success for TNA.

I was thinking Ricky Rachtman.
In terms of the WWF/E having a similar women's tag team at some point: Jumping Bomb Angels.

Success would be if most of those people are still tuning into TNA months from now. Just in this thread there are at least two or three people who tuned in for the novelty and said they won't be coming back (me being one of them).

This was kind of like watching a wrestling version of Old School. Hulk Hogan is the Godfather, Kevin Nash is Vince Vaughn, X-Pac is a forgettable character, Bubba the Love Sponge is Artie Lang, and Eric Bischoff is Jeremy Piven. Oh, and Ric Flair is obviously Blue.

The main difference is that I enjoyed Old School.

I absolutely agree; my hunch is that some of the viewers were watching it in a trainwreck fashion. But in a purely short-term perspective, the ratings were above the realistic hopes of TNA.

I've read in a couple of places -- dirt sheets, nothing credible, add grains of salt to taste -- that Hall and Waltman, at least, are on "pay-to-play" deals -- they get paid for what they do, and they're not under long-term contracts (or maybe even short term ones -- I'm not sure how it works). Who knows, but it makes sense, especially given their past history with the company.

Heh, Meltzer says that Hogan "told Jeff [Jarrett] to do a babyface promo because Jeff & Foley and Dixie & Hulk are both supposed to be babyface entities. His plan was to out-face him, and then was shocked when he got booed. The idea is not for Hogan to be a heel at this point."

That's pretty funny, since Hogan's promo against JJ felt to me like it was clearly a heel promo, and the crowd reacted appropriately.

I also agree with Stagger about Venis -- well, at least, I'd be willing to give him more of a chance if he dumped the pornstar shtick. Tired, tired, tired.

But, hell, I'll give Orlando another look -- *shrug* -- why not? Maybe he's gotten better. It happens. (Working with Ultimate Warrior probably did wonders for him!)

And from the "it could have been worse" department -- no Godfather!

As far as Jeff Hardy goes: it's possible that this is an attempt to bring the X Division (as a feature ostensibly unique to TNA) back to prominence -- it used to be promoted, years ago, as a title equal to the World Title. This was rarely actually true, sure, but it was certainly closer than it is now.

The problem was that, as they brought in more and more "Big Names," (Angle, Foley, Lashley) those names went to the World Title scene and by and large didn't fit into the X Division. So the X Division just wasn't as "ooh, exciting, there's another shot across WWE's bow!" and subsequently the bookers just, I dunno, lost interest.

Which means that the only way that the X Division is going to get any attention at all is if they can find "Big Names" for it. Which isn't an ideal solution, to me, but that's the way it is. But it's difficult to think of "Big Name" free agents that would be better (or at least equally) suited to the X than the World -- RVD? Who else? (Guys like Kendrick and London are emphatically not "Big Names" in this context.)

So, yeah, Jeff Hardy. Hopefully the plan is to renew the focus on the X Division. Who knows -- they may just be trying to elevate Homicide out of the Div -- it's not like Jeff attacked Red or made the "I want the belt" motion, so all of my hypothesizing is pretty tenuous at best.
