Sources: Rep. Watts Ready to Call It Quits
Mon Jul 1, 8:44 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts of Oklahoma, the only black Republican in Congress and his party's fourth-ranking leader in the House of Representatives, will announce his plans to retire on Monday, congressional sources said.

Watts intends to announce at a 10 a.m. EDT news conference in Norman, Oklahoma, that he will not seek a fifth term this November, aides say.

Hmm, wonder if he has any other plans?

My intial reaction to this of course was "Geez, maybe the Giants can offer him a contract. He is probably better than most the roster."

He's a great speaker-I enjoyed watching him at the Republican convention in 2000.

Aw, nuts, I like J.C. Watts. He's what a House Republican should be. A great speaker who is a geniune leader. Watts said that, "I believe that my work in the House of Representatives at this time in my life is completed," Watts said. "It is time to go home, to go on with other things in my life and assume one of the most time-honored titles in America: 'citizen.'" (quote source: CNN) We'll miss you Rep. Watts.

Well, he's likely not gearing up for a 2004 presidential run, what with the incumbent being a Republican. I'd rule out cabinet post, too, unless GW wants to make some more departments.

Anyone from OK think he has a shot at a senate seat? When is the next senatorial election, anyway?

Classy guys like Watts deserve some sort of recognition. I mean, how cool is it that he seems to genuinely appreciate being a citizen of the United States? Amazingly cool.

Why is it people tend not to appreciate life in the US unless they've been somewhere else for a while? Same thing happened to me with a 2-month trip that spanned Europe and parts of Asia (Japan, Korea and Hong Kong). Did you spend time in Venice? I'll be honest, I got there expecting culture and refinement. It was there, along with an ever-present funk that smelled kind of like a mixture of foot, ass, exhaust smoke and sewage. Sure, food cooking in the open air mollified this a bit, but DAMN. They were living especially foul.

It's why now, I'm pretty much able to ignore petty snips at the US because basically, our closest competition stinks(literally)!

Now, the bigger complaints/grievances/reasons to join a local militia, are more serious (and may have some basis in fact). Like George W and the many problems with him like possibly stealing the election and maybe sitting by and allowing 911 to happen so he could have an excuse to build the military and draft a series of draconian laws designed to keep the populace under the government's heels.

Okay, maybe those two were a bit "extreme" if you weel!

Despite the problems, I still believe the overall quality of life here is the best in the world (which explains why everyine is taking advantage of our lax immigration policies and laws and moving right on in). Besides, what other country allows you to not only talk shit about it's government, but allows you own a gun while talking that talk?
