They've run out of patience for Johnson, who won't have a shortage of suitors.

Kansas City Chiefs release troubled running back Larry Johnson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Larry Johnson's record-breaking career as a Kansas City running back is over.

The Chiefs confirmed Monday that they had run out of patience with his off-the-field problems and released Johnson the day he was due to come back from his second suspension in a year.

Johnson, who turns 30 on Nov. 19, was just 75 yards away from breaking Priest Holmes' team rushing record.

There's no shortage of contenders that could use a good running back. I'm sure Indy, New England, and Pittsburgh will be blowing up Johnson's phone soon enough.

Shouldn't they instead being trying to get a good running back? There is zero difference right now between LJ and say, Willie Parker.

I feel like Larry Johnson hasn't been any good for years anyway, as with most runningbacks who have record-setting seasons. Then again, his YPC was good last year so maybe he doesn't suck as much as I perceive. Pittsburgh will never take him though. They already have two flawed but promising or once-good starting RBs to choose from. But even if they didn't, they just don't sign people with really obvious character issues. I don't mean that in the mythopoeticized Rooneys idea of the Steelers as a team with a zero tolerance policy for non-classiness, because they do almost always stick by their own players who got into trouble. But they just don't willfully bring potential problem people into the fold. It's why the "Tomlin will rehabilitate Michael Vick!" stuff was preposterous.

Well, if we are going by "who gets a digruntled RB and makes them a part of the team" argument, New England will have him locked up in no time. Then again, isnt mulrony(spelling) doing a good job?

The name you might have been looking for is Maroney, and he's okay. He's been solid lately now that he isn't fighting for carries. I'd like to see the Pats pass on Johnson though. The guy's all done, and if some contender picks him up and he runs nuts on the Pats in the playoffs then so be it.

Pittsburgh doesn't need him, but Philly may pick him up since Westbrook is having his yearly mid-season injury bug. I could also see the 49ers as well to keep some of the pressure off of Gore. I think he is way past his prime even though his O-line sucks. We all know that he will be in silver and black by the end of week, right?

Part of his problem is the head coach that the whole team seems to loathe. Part of the problem is that he is an immature headcase. ANd finally, after his injusry he seems to have lost "it." I hope everyone takes a pass until he can demonstrate the maturity of at least a five year old.

The Bears have about 1.5 healthy running backs, but they're playing on Thursday this week and it probably wouldn't be enough time to wait for him to go thru waivers and pick him up. Maybe next week.

I think his place depends on what he wants out of the rest of the season. If he wants to rehab his image, he'll try to hook on as backup to a team in a positive direction. If he wants to prove he still is a feature back, he'll go to the place that'll give him the most carries. If he just doesn't care any more, he just stay home, collect the money KC still has to pay him, and wait till next year. No telling what he wants until LJ comes out and says it.

What's crazy is that Priest wouldn't even have that record right now if not for the insane comeback attempt in 2007.

Then this should be the end of his NFL career. He's been pitching tantrums and shooting off his mouth since college, and if he hasn't grown up in the almost-seven years of his pro career, then he doesn't have a lot of NFL time left to get it back on track.

Have to look at the 3 obvious franchises that could claim him off of waivers: Raiders, Raiders Midwest (Browns) and Raiders East (Redskins). Larry and Mangini would be humorous. Now, if he clears waivers, the options narrow significantly. Remember, Larry doesn't want to play for the white man, so that does eliminate many playoff contenders.

This might be the one time where the Raiders are one of the most unlikely landing places for a disgruntled former star. With the poopstorm currently going on with their Coach, they *may* actually try to steer clear of adding more corn to the mix just this once.

I certainly don't want it to happen, but I have to wonder if "my" Seahawks would give him a look-see with "our" running game being so bad at the moment? (Of course, I think fixing the O-line would help that out a great deal before just adding another back to the mix).

Per Adam Schefter (twitter.com), he cleared waivers and is a free agent.

EDIT: And now Schefter (twitter.com) says no Texans.

Good for them. So far, Cedric Benson has stayed out of jail long enough to play football, so maybe the same will hold true for LJ.
