I do not know if anyone else either saw or was present for this, but I figured I would write about this here anyway.

I found myself in the latter camp, having arrived at Santa Anita at 6 AM and not leaving until about 5 PM.

In any case, I am also in the camp of something that the on-air personalities spoke of regarding the Breeders' Cup Classic. It is moments like that that either remind you why you are a fan of the Sport of Kings or make you a fan to begin with.

When Zenyatta turned on the afterburners at about the 1/8th pole, the crowd went full on berserk.

It was a great day for racing before. It was indescribable after that.

Now it will be just another five years or so before the Cup returns to Arcadia. So I suppose I was fortunate enough to have gone to the event for consecutive years.

Anyone else go or see it?

I was in Vegas for the event (in fact, just got back home today). To be honest, when I handicapped the race, I felt there was no way she should be the favorite. Not only was she facing males for the first time, but she was going ten furlongs for the first time (and, while I can't recall the exact number, her Tomlinson Rating for the distance wasn't all that good). Factor in that the race was filled will other top notch closers like herself, with very little in the way of early speed in the field (especially after Quality Road was scratched) and it was clear that she had an uphill battle ahead of her. Which she came through with flying colors.

So congrats to owner Jerry Moss for having the courage to enter her in the Classic; congrats to trainer John Shirreffs for having her ready yet again, and congrats especially to Zenyatta, who is unquestionably the 2009 Horse of the Year.
