The nonlinear nature of the story really threw me. I have to admit that not being enough of a comic book nerd meant that it took me well into the story to figure out just what was going on - and by that time, I KNEW I'd have to watch this episode more than once just to be able to figure out what the heck happened.

With The Monarch and co. out of the way by the end of the flashback to the final moments of last season's finale - which took, what, all of ten seconds? it was hard to believe that there was still so much THERE....but as Jackson and Doc are wont to do, every answered question sprung up three or four NEW questions that we're going to have to wait on.

If you missed it - or can't stay awake until midnight/11PM, AdultSwim.com is your hookup (adultswim.com) for the next 14 days or so.

ANSWERED:
What happened to Brock?
What happened to H.E.L.P.eR?
What happened to Sgt. Hatred?
Is Henchman 24 really dead?

QUESTIONED:
What happened to Henchman 21?
Col. Gathers did WHAT?

There's probably a lot more in there, but I like being purposely vague in post #1 to bring some other people on board.

For all the fake worry from Williams Street, I don't think we can even come CLOSE to talking about shark jumping just yet. Great, great, great show and as usual, by the time the end credits came around, they left me wanting more. And even giving me a LITTLE more AFTER the credits...I still wanted more. :)

I will say that I thought the CGC had something to do with Magic: The Gathering or Pokemon. It was only when did I see the Marvel comic showing up did I realize what it meant. I thought the show was just hysterical with all the twists and turns. I have to say the Raiders' spoof in the beginning was awesome, Dr. O in the high priest outfit did it for me. I get the feeling we are going to be filling in the blanks for most of the season, but its going to fun doing it.

Season 3 had me concerned but ended strong.

Season 4... wow. Fantastic opening episode once again!

I finally get to watch the show in HD, and it is really, really nice. Loved that the modified opening sequence tradition continued. The non-linear theme was startling at first, but I was able to catch on to it pretty quick. Lots of fun. Brock at OSI was hilarious for the various misdirections. Finally, heaven help me, but Shore Leave even just standing there makes me laugh every time.

I'd never seen the CGC stuff before. A quick Google makes me think I'll have to re-watch to see what's up with all that.

Additional question: How did 21 end up with the X-1?

I thought this was probably the weakest season opener they've done since season one - which is not to say this was a bad episode. Not at all. I think my main beefs were the non-linear narrative, which I don't think worked quite as well as they wanted it to, and the fact that there was a lot of exposition at the expense of humor. Again, not that it wasn't funny, but it was definitely weighted more expository than humorous. My favorite bit probably was when they showed Hank cracking open the seal on the comic, and the CGC value just started dropping immediately. Still, did a really good job setting the table for the rest of the season, and I'm looking forward to the whole Sphinx angle - especially when we see how it works in conjunction with the Guild of Calamitous Intent.

It is not easy to develop an episode that would leave even the die-hard faithful going "WHAT?!?" for twenty minutes, then tie it all together so brilliantly.

GREAT episode.

Nice to see Adult Swim got actual HD capability recently.
